One ex-Leaf I didn't mind was Stalberg...he was pretty serviceable in the Hawks' Cup run as a 3rd-line checker who could also pot some points.
And Hayes, also an ex-Leaf, was not bad when he played but it was a matter of depth/ice-time and so, he was shipped off to get back the player we sent you to get Hayes and Stalberg in the 1st place, Versteeg.
So, Chicago thanks Toronto.

There is some hope for rehabilitation, but only a select few survive...

No surprise on the suspension, we'll just have to keep winning with our AHL lineup.

I think Neal's knee was worse than Engell's hit, but whatever

I feel the need...
Picked a prescient time to take our annual three week vacation. Instead of sharing a freezing aluminum bench at the big house with domcha on New Years day filling teh count's coffers with more $, I'll be sipping a tasty drink with an umbrella in it on the beach halfway around the world.
By the time I return to Hockeytown, I fully expect the pengoons to have the other half of their season starting lineup to be shanabanned.

I don't buy that it's a culture thing for a second, given the history with Matt Cooke, he was told to clean up his game or he was gone, and he did. He made a complete 180 degree turnaround in the way he played coming over from Vancouver, and cleaned up his game. He still got called occasionally just for having that name on the back of his jersey, but he was a totally different player after that. I think that people were upset about the clean hit by Orpik because it injured LE. That's the way Orpik plays, he plays on the edge, but he makes clean hits and has never targeted the head, he only makes the hit when he can go shoulder on shoulder. I think the last few calls against the Pens have been exaggerated because of the new "targeting the head rule" I think that the league wants to make an example, and so I think that the refs are clearly calling more borderline hits to attempt to show that they're enforcing the rule, especially in response to the outrage about the clean hit on LE not being called. I don't think Engelland targeted the head of Abdelkader either, but his follow through made it look bad, and he caught the jaw instead of just shoulder, I've said that I don't have a problem with that suspension either, but I didn't think that it was equal to Neal's knee. I also have no problem with Neal's suspension since Neal was just being a dumbass, and I certainly hope he doesn't pull any more dumb shit like that, that was just a lapse in judgement.
I think hits to the head is an epidemic and it's not just the Pens that are doing it, I think there's more attention on them since the Orpik, Thornton incident. But I saw 2 more nasty hits last night by Washington and Philly. I'm glad that the league wants to enforce and "prevent" hits to the head, but with the speed of the game, I'm not sure that's possible. Look at the NFL and all their rule changes, now instead of guys getting hit in the head, everyone is getting their knees and ACL's blown out. But it's not just the Pens who are being suspended for this stuff, almost daily you hear about players from all over the league getting suspended for hits. A number of Leafs were just suspended for the same shit, and just in the last week you have suspensions for players from Tampa, Washington, Ottawa, and Carolina just to name a few. We all know that Shannaban is not the answer, but he sure is making a push this year, good or bad. I'm hoping things calm down with all teams, but like I said, I think that the way the speed of the game is these days, there will always be guys getting hit with their heads down.
