Penguins Hire Jacques Martin as Assistant Coach
The Pittsburgh Penguins have hired Jacques Martin as an assistant coach, it was announced today by General Manager Ray Shero and Head Coach Dan Bylsma.
Martin, 60, a former NHL head coach with St. Louis, Ottawa, Florida and Montreal, joins Tony Granato and Todd Reirden as assistants on Bylsma’s staff.

The native of St-Pascal, Ontario has spent a lifetime in coaching, including stints as an assistant with Chicago, Quebec and Colorado in the NHL. He was an associate coach for the 2002 Canadian Olympic team that won a gold medal in St. Lake City and served in the same capacity for Canada at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy. In addition to his coaching experience, he served in the dual role of General Manager and head coach with the Florida Panthers from 2006-08.
“Jacques is a highly-respected and accomplished coach who will be a tremendous addition to our staff,” Shero said. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our organization because of his extensive background as a head coach and an assistant.”
“I know we’re all going to benefit from having Jacques Martin on our staff,” Bylsma said. “Jacques and I have spent a great deal of time over the last few weeks discussing this possibility. It will be great to have another voice, another perspective – especially from a man of Jacque’s experience. We’re all looking forward for getting together as a staff and preparing for the coming season.”
Martin’s NHL head coaching resume includes 1,294 games, 613 wins and 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons. He ranks seventh all-time among NHL coaches in games coached and 10th all-time in wins. He won the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions.
Martin led Montreal to victory over the Penguins in the second round of the 2010 playoffs. He last coached with Montreal during the 2011-12 season and worked last year as a television analyst.
“It’s such an exciting opportunity to come to Pittsburgh and work with Dan, Tony, and Todd,” Martin said. “The expectations are always high for the Penguins, but I look forward to the challenge and to helping Dan and his staff in any way possible.”
Martin began his NHL head coaching career with the St. Louis from 1986-88. He spent nine seasons with Ottawa (1995-2004), leading the Senators to the NHL’s best regular-season record in 2002-03. He coached Florida from 2005-08 and Montreal from 2009-12
Martin and Shero worked together in Ottawa when Shero served as assistant general manager of the Senators.
The new Penguins’ assistant coach played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, where he was a goaltender. Before becoming an NHL coach, he spent three seasons coaching in the Ontario Hockey League – two as an assistant with the Peterborough Petes (1983-85) and one as head coach of the Guelph Platers (1985-86). He led Guelph to the Memorial Cup championship.
Jacques has two daughters, Angela and Nathalee.

When Sidney Crosby jumps over the boards in NHL arenas it generally makes hockey fans happy, but when he jumps the line at the DMV people get upset.
Over the weekend, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain skipped past a group of people at the Duncan Manor Department of Motor Vehicles in McCandless, Penn., and he has received some backlash over it.
“I disapprove. He should have to sit and wait with everyone else,” 46-year-old Susan Campbell, who was at the DMV, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which first reported the story.
The Pennsylvania DMV has a policy in place that can allow celebrities to skip to the front of the line in order to cut down on disruptions.
“If they walk in and the place goes crazy with fans, we would just move them in and out,” Jan McKnight, a spokeswoman for the DMV told the Post-Gazette. “It’s a matter of keeping control and keeping disruptions to a minimum.”
Since the story became public, Crosby has taken some heat, but that didn’t stop one of his teammates from poking fun at the situation.i

I knew this story would make it here, if every toothless reject wouldn't knock him over trying to get him to sign their baby, he would be able to wait in line

I don't have any kids, but I do have a number of autographs, but I pay to go to autograph sessions. When I meet these guys in person, I never ask for an autograph, I just introduce myself and wish them well. And the toothless rejects comment was a joke, that DMV is like 2 miles from my house. But you guys can't tell me that you think Toes, or Drew Doty, or Zdeno actually wait in line at the DMV

We can always tell who actually played hockey growing up and who didn't in this thread. Trust me, the salty language and ribbing here makes us all look like choir boys compared to what's said on the ice.
Just ask domcha, he failed at pro hockey and he knows.

Tis true.....what's said in the beer leagues would cause some who frequent this thread to clutch their pearls.
