Took some befores of the powder room, got the rest of the wallpaper backing and glue down, we also ripped out the old wall mounted sink, toilet and medicine cabinet to start getting ready for the makeover. Found some interesting things behind the sink/mirror area. These squares were filled in with cardboard and mudded over...
The toilet paper holder was set in to the wall and had to be cut out
The towel rack was also mortered into the wall...
And the window had significant water damage around the frame...
Thanks guys, unfortunately this is going to be a lot bigger project than I had hoped. There is water damage all the way around the window, plus an old leak that I thought wasn't leaking anymore, showed to still be leaking during a heavy rain the other night. My contractor is hoping that it's just leaking around the plumbing vent so he is going to try and seal that today. Basically I'm looking at a whole gut and drywall replacement on top of the rest of the work. So this little useless powder room that I don't use just doubled in cost
are we going to ignore the elephant in the room?
that if you had known that you could have smashed all that fucking drywall with wallpaper on it and gotten your weekend back?
Well, we believe we found the culprit. The roof looks fine, and this is the only opening in the roof in that area. My contractor guessed that it was this before even looking on the roof. According to him there was a crack in the vent that was letting water in during hard rains. I wish my home inspector would have found this issue 10 years ago so I wouldn't be dealing with it now... He caulked a good solid 2 inches around the pipe and we have to check tonight after it rained to see if any more water is coming through. Assuming that this fixed the issue, we should be good to start the remodel and rip out the drywall
Well it took 3 days for the demo to actually happen, but he finally came and removed all the sheet rock.
There's definitely no question where that leak in the ceiling was coming from
And we were impressed with the add on GFI box that wasn't mounted to anything lol. I had already replaced the GFI outlet, but when the drywall came down we discovered that it wasn't mounted to anything
listen, we aren't all meant to survive...
if you die because of faulty wiring in your older home at least you gave your family a cool story to tell at Thanksgiving for years to come!
it's a retrofit box. It doesn't get secured to the structure.
You are correct, like I said it was added after the fact, but since we had the walls off we decided to get a proper box and mount it to the stud so it was housed correctly
It's a shame. I found some piping that was done shitty by the builder/contractor on our house. Ended up replacing it. While I sit there looking at it, I'm like WTF did inspectors not come out in 1999.
Built to code my ass.... This is why I wish I had money, and could just build my house from the ground up and check the progress daily.
