ugh...how people like avsforum is beyond. Went in there to look for some answers...95% of the members have NO clue what they are talking about and it just difficult to find an answer.
Anyway, hooked up my new Slim for BR viewing. Discovered went the BR 24Hz mode is set to ON or AUTOMATIC it drops picture (not audio) in several places during the boot up of the disc and them will not display the main menu page of a BR.
When I turn the setting to OFF, everything works just great.
What is the point of the 24Hz setting if it continually does this? I'm going to just assume I'm not losing out on anything by not being able to use this setting.

From IGN...
Despite the release of sleeker and slimmer redesign of the PlayStation 3 earlier this year, it seems Sony still hasn't figured out a way to turn a profit on its home console hardware.
According to a recent report from iSuppli, an electronic market research and consulting firm, Sony is still taking a loss on all PlayStation 3 consoles sold to this point.
There is good news for Sony, however, as the console manufacture has significantly cut down costs to only $336.27 per system, which according to iSuppli, causes the company to lose $37.27 on each sale, not taking into account software, box contents and royalties, for example.
Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst for iSuppl, said its impressive how quickly Sony has been able to reduce cost and still almost break even in light of dropping the price PS3 $100 USD.
"Since the introduction of the PlayStation 3 in late 2006, Sony has subsidized the price of every console sold, a deficit the company has made up for with game sales and royalties," said Rassweiler. "However, with each new revision of the game console hardware, Sony has aggressively designed out costs to reach the hardware and manufacturing breakeven point as quickly as possible."
"The latest version of the PlayStation 3 manages to further reduce the loss, even with the U.S. price of the console having fallen by $100 during the past year," he added.
In October 2008, iSuppli's Teardown Analysis Service was able to determine Sony was taking a loss of $49.72 on each PlayStation 3 sold during that time period. iSuppli also says 2010 will see material costs decline significantly due to ongoing reductions in component pricing, and that console pricing is likely lower in the U.S. than any other country.
"In light of these factors, the PlayStation 3 probably is already at or near the tipping point for profitability," Rassweiler said.

... Hasn't that usually been the case? I remember the first Xbox suffered from the same situation. Microsoft apparently lost over $100 from each console back when it first came out. I'm sure the same can roughly be said about the Xbox 360.
getting really really
here.
i am done with my 60GB PS3 and maybe PS3 in general. i dont care for PS2 backwards compatibility anymore.
i think my unit just stopped reading discs

so thats 2 60GB ps3s that have went bad on me.

no no warranty, my original 1st release 60GB ps3 crapped out on me last year and i sent it to sony and paid them i think it was 200? or 150 i cant remember and they sent me back a refurbished unit.
i read online that it could be caused by 2 things, either a dirty lens or a busted motor.
i will try cleaning it and see what happens.
if i cant fix it.
maybe go for a slim. too many games invested into playstation to switch.

ok, so the motor in the ps3 still works (put in a disc and made note of the position of the label and then ejected it and it came out in a different direction)
so i am going to use a vacuum to suck out whatever dust i can and buy one of those lens cleaning CDs.

Don't waste your time with one of those discs. How can something that doesn't come in contact with the lense clean it? Just use some compressed air.
ehh.. yes they do come in contact with the lens, there is a brush on the underside of the CD.
anyways so it didnt help, so im going to return it. and deal with the 15% restocking fee
better than having it sit around doing nothing.
and compressed air is the last thing you want to use to clean a console.!!
and i did it anyways after the CD failed.
suck that i have to buy a damn ps3 every year!

PlayStation Move ad rips Wii, Xbox 360's Natal

it must really chap their ass that a system with less graphical and computing power has been kicking their ass, wonder where they got the idea for those remotes. :hmm:
Sony is using its comical PlayStation 3 TV campaign to take jabs at the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360's upcoming motion control system Project Natal.
The fresh commercial, which again features fictional Sony executive Kevin Butler, stars the PlayStation Move, the set of motion controllers set to release later this year for PlayStation 3.

I thought the commercial was funny, especially the Royals joke.
Sony has caught up now. They were losing tons of money on their systems (they've minimized that). They were being outsold by the Wii/xbox 2:1(they've since caught up and are outselling both this year. and will probably rule the console market until new ones come out). They improved what MS and Wii have (6axis motion). So now it really will do "Everything".

What's your point...? For all intents and purposes, I'm not sure I care too much about the new motion controller. The PS3 is fine doing what it does...I think it's fantastic as a media center and the games it has in its lineup. And oh, as a Blu-Ray player, wonderful.

Please tell me you're not getting into a Wii/360 greater than thou thing, are you?
the ps 3 a good product overall, but they are riding the wii coatails with this, they seem to be the company least willing to push the envlope.
and when the hell is GT-5 ever coming out?
^ Ah...gotcha. I suppose Sony is trying just to live up to their new marketing slogan of "It just does everything."
Anyhow, as for GT5, it's freaking vaporware as far as I'm concerned. It's status is as mythical as the Duke Nukem sequel.

Hell, I'm tempted to buy a 2nd one now so that I can have a Blu Ray Player in my game/office room.
As for the Motion controller

It was bound to happen. Sony launched the PS3 with that Six Axis motion control, which in my opinion was a crappy version of the Wiimote to begin with.
They're trying to capture a bigger audience, and IMO its a smart move.
