Well after trying to skim through this whole thread and saying fuck it after page 42 because every page was full of Xbox vs PS convo, I have a PS3 newb question

Are you guys able to upload movies from the disc onto the system? Also, after you have uploaded music are you able to listen to it during the game you're playing? If so, how? Thanks

I doubt you can copy a DVD or Blu-Ray movie to the HD, but I think you can copy AVI, MP4, MPG, etc. files. After inserting the disc and clicking on it, it should list the files. Select a file and press the Triangle. I think there will be a "Copy" selection available.

For your second question, I have not tried that, but I would think that would be game specific?

The background music for a game has recently been implemented in one of the latest firmwares. However, the game must support it. I think there's a wiki on this. I haven't inquired about it, because I really don't care to change the music unless I'm playing a sports game.

my ps3 is requesting a 2.53 update, but after seeing online that alot of the owners that downloaded the update have disc reading problems after. and I saw someone say sony denys that an update could cause the problem. I can't do anything online without the update, but I'm thinking of waiting for the next update version and doing without psn until then.

my ps3 is the 80g unit, are some units more likely to have this update prob than others?

probably the 1st generation PS3s, the 20 and 60gb models and maybe a few of the 80gb models, the ones with BC.

doubt if it's the 2.53 update that's causing it. My one month old PS3 was running fine on the firmware prior to it when it suddenly locked up during a horrendous session of GH3 (gf said I sucked so bad on the guitar the poor machine revolted).

After that, the drive would refuse to recognize any BD disks (regular DVDs were fine). Checked for an update and it found 2.53, applied it and it didn't do anything either way.

Right now waiting for Sony to ship me the PS3 coffin so I can get the drive replaced. Mine's the new 80Gb btw.

Does anyone know if the PS3 allows the game to be saved onto the HD like Xbox does?

basically the same thing I was wondering but I asked about movies. I doubt it though unless you download it from the Sony store or whatever they call it.

^ Unless I'm confused as to what you are talking about it naturally saves the games onto the HD but you have the option to save it onto a memory card.

I thought it only saved game progress. I was under the impression he is talking about whole games?

I should have been more specific. I meant to say does it save an entire game to the HD so that the game can be played without the disc at all.

I have similar questions. My friend had an awesome Xbox setup where all his games were saved on the HD, so no need to fiddle with any cd's or anything. Everything was accessible via the controller, so no need to get up either! It was pretty sweet. Is such a scenario possible with the PS3? I would love to get one and put a 250Gb in (or larger) and do it.

That's what I was thinking of doing. I have an Xbox too but want to upgrade the HD so that I have space to do the same as your buddy for the same reason.

on the Xbox I think it required some kind of homebrew app.. I would guess similarly its not possible on the PS3, out of the box.

Nothing that I know of yet on the PS3 for downloading game to the HD from disc or PSN. I know you can buy titles like Gran Turismo 5 off the store or Socom and not need a disc. Right now we're swapping between GH3, RB2, and Singstar so it would be a convenient feature.

as far as i know of you cant install the entire game onto the PS3's hard drive.

but there are alot of games where you install the game onto the HD allowing for faster load times.

also with the xbox 360, if you install the full game onto the HD the legitimate way, you have to put in the original disc first before you load up any game.

True.
But either loading from the 360's HD or from the disc are still significantly faster than the PS3 and it's games. It is in my case anyhow.

Anyone else notice the firmware (2.60) updates the video codecs for Divx playback? Plus some sort of a new photo album feature.

Yeah I d/led it. Plus I watched the video in the PSN about it. The photo thing is pretty cool. Unfortunately it looks like it only accesses video in the HDD, not in a USB drive. I have a 40GB so I'm saving space until I swap the drive. I don't watch Divx movies really so this FW didn't tickle my pickle too much.

Ugh, I'm thinking about getting a PS3, but since I was the only person who never owned a PS2, I wanna get one that's backwards compatible.

I don't want to get a pre-owned PS3 that is compatible with PS2 games, then have Sony release a new model that IS PS2-compatible, a few months later...

once you start playing PS3 games... I highly doubt you'll miss the PS2 games...
