Sony: PS3 News and Discussion Thread
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but...
I bought an 80 GB PS3 that apparently can't play PS2 games, yet it still gives me the option to save PS2 saved games on it. If I can't play PS2 games on it then why would I want to copy my save files to it? Just wondering..

If you send a cease and desist about "leaked" photos of a supposed device, you're basically saying, "Hey guys, those pictures are real." Now, we can't tell you with 100 percent assurance that that's the case when it comes to those factory pics of rubber-gloved hands all over an apparently-new PS3 hardware design, but it doesn't help anyone's case when a Chinese company sends your Japanese wing a takedown notice. Keep in mind, since this thing isn't from Sony, we can't really be sure that it's the real deal, but we'll be honest -- things are starting to look mighty suspicious. Text of one of the charming messages after the break. We'll pause for comment now.

The Gizmodo and Kotaku bloggers said it was more accurate than Wii Motion Plus.
I'm disappointed that they didn't announce the slim PS3. And they pushed that Mod Racing game way too much. Freaking Sony is using the Wii formula with that Mario Kart wanna be and motion controls.

COLOGNE--While GamesCom won't open its doors to the public until tomorrow, today may see the biggest news to come out of the massive trade show. This evening, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has summoned reporters, analysts, and industry types to gather for its press briefing, initially believed to be three hours long.
While the briefing's runtime is now closer to just an hour, that gives Sony plenty of times to use the event to broadcast its PlayStation brand plans for the world. There's been much interest in those plans, fueled by a steady stream of rumors that the company will use GamesCom to unveil a cheaper, slimline model of the PlayStation 3. Speculation has been percolating about such a device since photos surfaced in May, and was apparently confirmed this morning by product listings on US retailers K-mart and Sears.
As for the rest of Sony's conference, reports out of the UK indicate the financially troubled electronics giant will use it to unveil its European PS3 video store. The television show and movie marketplace launched in North America last summer shortly after at Sony's 2008 Electronic Entertainment Expo presentation.
The Sony GamesCom press conference is at a club called E-work, about 10 minutes out of town.
[9:35] After a 30 minute delay, Sony has let people into the main hall. On the stage are letters that read "The game is just the start..."
A massive billboard directly outside the venue says "watch this space."
[9:35] The room appears to be a converted German dance club, complete with house music playing over the speakers. Welcome to Cologne.
[9:35] So far, the stage is completely free of people. No one is milling about doing last-minute AV fixes.
[9:37] PA Announcer: The conference will start shortly. Also giving out general housekeeping rules.
[9:38] Back to the dance music, but not the dancing
[9:38] The first two rows of the audience are reserved for Sony staff. A good mix of Japanese, European and American Sony employees.
[9:39] The stage is still very empty.
[9:41] No one seems to be handing out K-Mart flyers. Yet.
[9:41] Interesting Note: Outside the venue was a large billboard reading "Watch this space 18-08-09"
[9:41] Possible cover for a PS3 Slim billboard to be yanked down during the show?
[9:43] The wait continues. PA Announcer continues to assure everyone that the show will, in fact, begin shortly. Really. No foolin'.
[9:45] It's a good thing Sony has provided such a pleasing screensaver to run on the jumbotron during this wait. It really would make a great screensaver on the PS3.
[9:45] Security is now milling about in front of the stage. Good sign?
[9:46] The teleprompter at the rear of the room reads simply "GAMESCOM." No word yet whether opening speaker will speak or scream this first word of the show.
[9:48] Completely packed house settles as the music fades out and lights dim.

[10:34] PS3 slim available first week of September worldwide.
[10:34] Noticeably thinner, appears just as tall.
[10:35] Top has a matte finish--as shown in the leaked photos in May--sides are glossy.
[10:35] Will be 120GB, will retail for $299 in North America, €299 in the EU, and ¥29,980 in Japan.
[10:36] That price will also apply to ALL current 80GB PS3s starting tomorrow.
[10:36] The PS3 Slim is 32 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, and has 34 percent less power consumption than the current model. It will have all the same features and functionality as the current PS3.
[10:36] Kaz exits to roaring applause.
[10:36] House returns to stage, says new price and model will continue to drive momentum to new levels.
[10:36] Release date will vary by country, but will be first week of September internationally.
[10:37] House now summarizing press conference.
[10:37] House thanks the visitors for attending.
[10:37] Conference has concluded--that's all folks!
+1 Me too. Been waiting for the slim for a while now. It's coming out a lot earlier than I thought too which is great. I can go return the blu ray player I bought 3 weeks ago and wait for this to come out in a couple weeks.
sweet now PS3's can overheat like 360's
I'll take a slim in a fat box. I mean why is a tiny console important?
When we've obviously all seen what happens when you put lots of power in a tight poorly ventilated box. That's the reason my 360 looks like it has a supercharged 454 with cowl induction and I stick to big giant towers for PC's. btw all my 360's fish died in the move so sad. they loved life and gaming.
now 50% of you are really confused

certified fresh pics! I haven't been able to invest in prettying it up more since I have to watch this little guy now. I'm lucky I get the night shift, lots of video games, posting and diapers. The 360 has been completely maintenance free, except for adding water once every two weeks.

What do the 360 and baby have in common? You have to feed them both water. That's wack but necessary.
Procrastinators: You could've gotten a PS3 for $300 last year when Wal Mart gave away the $100 gift cards with a purchase of one. Yeah technically you still spend $400 but I got $100 worth of free groceries. You always gotta eat.
And not to hate on the new one, but I like the glossy look of my PS3. The top part of the slim looks like cheap plastic. My PS3 is practically on the ground in my home theater setup so you see the top mostly.

at this thread becoming sony/ps3 ranting.
Sold my 40g PS3 a few months ago, because of finacial reasons. Now I'm working agian, and this couldn't have came at a better time!
Still contemplating if I should get it(the Slim, of course!), or wait until when God of War 3 comes out.
I got me a modded 360, so the PS3 would be for PS exclusive games only.

Damn, I've had the 360 since summer of 2006 and have not had a single issue with it. Then again it's usually not on long enough to overheat. It's on longer when I watch movies then when I play games...

Sony says that to achieve the new form factor, the internal design architecture of the new PS3 system has been completely redesigned--"from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism."
The PS3 Slim is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which runs at the same speed as the 60nm processor in the "old" PS3 but is smaller and more energy efficient. According to company reps, power consumption for the Slim has also been cut to two-thirds, "helping to reduce fan noise," which is important.

Like the 80GB and 160GB models, the 120GB PS3 Slim has built-in Wi-Fi and two USB ports (sorry, Sony didn't add IR or backwards compatibility for PS2 games). You can also upgrade/replace the hard drive without voiding the warranty, though Sony has moved the hard drive from the side of the unit to the front for "easier access." (To remove the hard drive, you simply unscrew two screws). The one feature missing from the Slim is the ability to install another operating system (i.e., Linux)--Sony is doing away with that feature.

I mention the heat issues one because of the problems the 360's have(it was heat related) and the problems laptops have with over heating. There's a very good chance the slim ps3 will be fine, but like I said why not just put the new components in the same box.
Because people want to have the more advanced system, even if advanced means slightly smaller. The new components might be able to just handle the heat within much tighter tolerances than if they put the better chip sets in the same old package, but they'd never sell......To some extent I see it as a fashion statement and much like the cellphone market, it's neat but not needed. A ps4 would be a different story
I forgot to address one of your comments. When trying to make a bullet proof 360 I did a lot of experiments with temperature of the chips, heatsinks and exhaust. It turned out within 15min. of being on the 360 gets to it's maximum temperature. The only time it could cool down was if you went to the dashboard, otherwise it didn't matter. In fact after my second broke, I actually had to keep it on all the time or the board would cool and break the solder joints, so I'd leave it on 24/7, it worked for about 2 months and than I went psycho with the cooling mods. The main problem was inferior thermal paste and bad heat sink clamps. The paste would melt at too low a temperature and allow the chips to heat up beyond spec once this happened the chip clamps would cause the board to warp and lose solder connections. This is why the replacements 360's usually went bad too since the board was already warped once and they kept using the same damn clamps.
I dont have much money and knew microsoft would just piss me off more so I fixed and properly and than overdid my cooling to make sure I'd never fry the board. There more than you'd ever want to know about the red ring of death.
For any perspective buyers the new chip set supposedly is much much better than the falcon chip set that mine has, but the red ring has occured in all 3 or 4(?) generations of chip sets.

Plus, it matches my TV and (eventually) my speakers, which is (will be) piano black.
