Sony: PS3 News and Discussion Thread

In that regard, yes, all they have been doing is adding more space.
The PS3 had a rough start,
- in a year or 2 I think the story will be different. Sony had to make changes to reduce production costs because they admittedly were taking a huge hit. By the way - currently it costs 1/2 the amount it costed to produce a PS3 initially.

I never said the ipod was the best overall. But they are number 1, and each change has brought on enough of difference from the last to warrant demand. And they don't update or refresh the ipods THAT often. every 6 months to a year which is about right for technology.
Big deal the cost of production came down. They are still losing money on them.

They just know they are trailing the pack in video game sales and have to keep trying to entice new buyers. Yet with as quickly as they are swapping drives, they are screwing prior purchasers.
And yes srika...apple did it with the iphone and pissed many people, myself not being one of them. But thats about the one "boo boo" they made like that, and they made reparations to the masses for it.

technology progression didn't really pertain to what they change....just that things get cheaper to build, etc.

All in all, especially compared to the wii and the 360 the ps3 has been a flop...now that bluray is taking off people are starting to say ok, im buying one as a player.

I owned the 360 the first year it came out. I listened to all thsoe people that said "it's a flop; look, there are no games available; no one is going to want to pay that much for a system, etc, etc."
After a 1-2 years it all worked out. While the PS3 is a little slower in doing this...I definately think it's on the right track...and would say it's anything but a flop (yes, it hasn't met expectations, but it is improving".
The Wii isn't in the same class as either...it is a much different type of unit at a much different price point.
And actually, i'd put a lot of it at "cheaper to build"...but some of the reasoning it is now cheaper to build is to "entice new buyers"
I don't know anyone who isn't really happy w/ their PS3. I know some 360 owners that bought one too and don't use it....but I see no reason to have both units....so many of the games available are on both systems, etc.
I will admit, Xbox has done more w/ it's XBL.....but it did take some time to get there.....The Playstation Network has improved a bunch since the initial launch.
The PS3 isn't going anywhere, it is here to stay and it will be successful

And let's be honest, the 360 has been one of the most unreliable consoles in history (and I LIKE the 360)
I will admit, I had a problem w/ my sixxaxis controller about 3 weeks ago because one of the joysticks would move to the right. called sony, took about 15 minutes w/ CS......sent it in....literally had a brand new controller at my door 4 days later.
Anyone here know if the PS3 component cable is backwards-compatible with the PS2? A Google search turned up nothing, but I'm gonna try again after this post ..
I just bought a new 32" TV and a PS3 will be out of my range until summertime .. Just thought I'd take FULL advantage of the PS2 while I still have it.

Is Sony's PS3 getting a redesign?

According to T3 magazine and a "particularly well-informed insider," the PS3 is due not just for hard drive updates, but a total design revamp down to a slimmer and smaller package sometime in the Fall. If you believe what you read, the refreshed console will sport all the same specs, but will receive a fresh coat of paint, a trip through the shrinking machine, and probably a lightened load. Of course, this is all just wild speculation coupled with salacious, magazine-selling 3D renders of the phantom device, as Sony denies the existence of an update and we don't really know who this source is. On the other hand, the company pulls this kind of ditzy "who me?" stuff whenever it's got a new product up its sleeve -- though we're not feeling the timing on this shocker.

Just sayin'.
Is it going to be physically possible though? My PS3 weighs a ton, and even given the advances in technology, where would they cut down the size from so drastically within such a small time frame?
I was wondering about that too.. and, I was thinking, they may have to cut or limit some functionality in order to do that - and that would suck - if its substantial I would probably pick up the Gen1 while its available.
I don't know about that. They're pretty close to losing this generation to Microsoft, and limiting functionality would be handing over first place to Microsoft on a silver platter. It's an excellent console, but Sony has just managed to screw itself every possible way during the marketing of the product.

mystikk...no idea. My PS3 is hooked to the TV via HDMI and the PS2 is using S-Video...
