As many as 600,000 Xbox 360s were banned from the Xbox Live service this week in the latest in a series of crackdowns by Microsoft on illegally modified consoles.
The banned machines -- a "small percentage" of the millions of Xbox 360s around the world -- are alleged to have been modified in ways that violate Xbox Live's terms of service, but Microsoft won't say exactly how they can tell, nor exactly how many users were affected. Banned consoles can still play games, but can't connect to the Xbox Live service for multiplayer gaming, content downloads or software updates.
"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live," Microsoft said in a statement today.
The bans were apparently timed to coincide with yesterday's release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, expected to be by far the biggest gaming event of the year. One affected Call of Duty fan, a self-confessed software pirate called "Raz," told the BBC about his disappointment.
Owners of modded 360s will no longer be allowed to play online.
"It was a big day yesterday, the latest game we've been waiting months and months for. We've played the whole series and this one's come out, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2...I sign in online and next thing I see, 'Your console has been banned from Xbox'...now I don't know what to do," he told the BBC's Newsbeat.
Most law-abiding gamers will have little sympathy for Raz -- but at least one banned Xbox owner claims to have been targeted by accident, and that Microsoft won't listen to his excuses.
"My console and my fiance's console were caught up in the Mass Banning going on by Microsoft in their latest Pirate Witch Hunt. My fiance is a chef, and plays games like Viva Pinata, Arcade Games, and can't figure out how to remove the battery pack, much less tear apart her system to 'mod' anything," he told The Consumerist.
He's had little luck with Microsoft's customer service, either. "At one point a man who called himself 'Charles' told me that it was my problem and I should learn to follow the rules, then hung up on me," he said.

they'll have to in this situation.. normally they ban Gamertags... in this particular event.. they are banning Consoles.. essentially making them offline game only bricks..
there was 75 modded xbox's on one city's craigslist the next day!

I sold my banned elite console (console only - no additions such a hard drive, cables or controllers) for $100 and bought an unmodded elite for the same amount. Some people are even doing even trades because they don't care about live and just want to be able to play burned games
In the end, everyone who was banned will find a way to get back online.

you dont need to buy 30 titles at once... 60 bucks everytime a good, big name game is released- every month or two... is not a wallet buster...
saving $15 each week gives you a brand new title every month... its not that hard...
in a few years, video games will be $75 a pop and the pirates are the reason why

Microsoft wants you on Xbox LIVE for the weekend with, of course, a view toward forever, and it's prepared to temporarily waive the cover fee to grab your attention.
Xbox LIVE Gold-tier membership usually costs $50 a year and provides access to features like online multiplayer, Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM, and Netflix for starters. Xbox LIVE Silver members who pay nothing save the time it takes to register a free account are by contrast left to nibble on skeletal features like online gamer profiles and friends lists, but otherwise have to stand at the window looking in.
That changes this weekend for US Xbox 360 gamers with a Silver membership (again, totally free) and the ability to bring their Xbox 360s online with an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi adapter.
As noted this Tuesday by Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, all Xbox LIVE regions except Europe will have free access to Gold services from November 20th at 12:00PM ET / 9:00AM PT until November 23rd at the same time. Europe's getting it too, of course, just a couple days later, and for a slightly longer time period--from November 25th to November 30th.

good trick to get free gold for a month
anytime you create a new xbox live gamertag you get a free month of gold. Im pretty sure this works as many times as you need, only problem is you lose all your online data (unless there is a way to transfer it to the new gamertag)

Didn't want to start a new thread... I have the original 360 Core and the video card just crapped out. I was going to buy an arcade and just put my old HD on the arcade instead of buying an elite.
Does anyone know if the core + arcade + elite have the same case? I was going to take my old case off, paint it matte black and put it on the core. Thanks.

i've had friends playing on live with me who have never payed for xbox live for at least 2 years.
they just create new silver accounts every month and they are able to play online with us.
just dont get to keep the same name or achievements.

Well it's not just the video.. my dvd drive randomly will stop reading the disc (even brand new, perfect condition discs).

Has anyone else here gotten the 80072ee2 error code? I can access Live, but it kicks me out of games and I cannot see most of my channels.
The xbox is less than 2 months old and was working fine late last week. Google searches make it seem like a router-xbox interface issue.
I saw sly's post on something similar, but was not sure of the resolution.

That means the servers are not responding fast enough.
Do a network test and see what your NAT settings comeback as. If it is anything other than "open", then your connection is slow/timing out.
What kind of router and internet connection are you using? It's possible the settings in the router are not allowing traffic through certain ports.

There's a few other simple tricks I saw on xbox support and forums so I'll try that if it's still crappy tonight

I have an N router now. The problem is that I do not have the xbox wireless N adapter. I bought one but the xbox did not recognize it, so I exchanged it for the white one.
It's still a little "jumpy/laggy" but there is one step beyond the port forwarding that I read on the xbox support page. It's just pissing my off that a week ago the connection was flawless...fuck linksys
Now the wireless controller won't stay paired to the xbox. I cannot turn the xbox on with it. No issues while playing and I can turn the xbox off with it, just loses it's connection when the console is turned off.
So many issues.
