its extremely common and results in $12-15k in damage. If I didn't have a garage to park in I wouldn't have this car.

^ Agreed.

But dont you need to get the doors open to unbolt the seats? I would think the stock alarm would go off when they try to unlock the doors from the inside...

It sucks that avid car enthusiasts second-guess themselves about buying a certain car because of the fear of getting something stolen. *>Thieves...

dude who knows.. good thieves are very very good. did you see that Symbolic Motors video where they hired people to break into the store? After watching that I was just like - the general public really has no clue about exactly how vulnerable they are... I mean there's sh*t you would never even think of.

A set of locking bolts is available to make it a little more difficult to grab the seats/interior.

However, to figure out whether you have said locking bolts, the potential thief would still have to cut the roof. Mine is safely locked in my garage.

I find that the hardtop spoils S2k equation though. Top down motoring.

By the time a thief gets to the seat locks they would have already cut the top open and may just slice your seats out of spite. That said the car is still drivable, but its a pain in the ass to deal with.

How realistic is it to find a higher mileage S2000 for under 10k?

Is it even worth it?

No chance. Unless it has a salvage title.

But it's also not something you can pop off (or on) in your garage in 10 minutes either.

I was completely turned off the the ITR in that regard. No matter where I went it would have to be in plain sight 100% of the time or in a garage.... not happening with an ES350 and a TL-S in the household

The OEM hardtop makes the S2000 look a lot better vs. the soft-top up All those Spoon ones are ugly as shit though. Better than having your car totaled, either way.

Now that I think about it, there's no way in hell I could have an S2000. One of my jobs is near a mall, and one of my former co-workers got his GSR stolen, as in GONE, twice and they broke into it a few times over the course of over a year. Screw that....

So they get pissed and cut the seats

Same theory with locking gas caps. They cant steal your gas but when they realize they cant, they key your car.

Unless you do the DIY hardtop hoist mod... "store bought" hoists are around $200, but the DIY is like 50-80 IIRC...

Like Steve said, under 10K is salvage, and you usually have to repair the damage still... But I have seen some w/ clean titles around $11K w/ 100K miles...

I'm hoping that Honda finally discontinues the S2K. That will increase the residual value. and make the car an "investment". The car certainly has the potential to be a classic. However, it will likely soldier on for another 5-6 years, just as the NSX did, until its discontinuance.

^ BUT... what are the production numbers? Are they as limited as the NSX? For example, NSX between 2002-2005, only around 260 or something were sold in the USA.

I hope your correct, but most cars drop in value once they are discontinued

About 7K a year (on average), but the numbers have taken a dump lately...

@ the locking bolts and locking gas cap theory

oh, they can't steal your seats so they'll just cut them in spite

oh, they can't steal your gas so they key your car

oh, they can't steal your car so they set it on fire

I should just leave my car unlocked so they won't hurt my car when they steal it

Some rumors I have read over the past year say that Honda will be discontinuing the S2000 after MY2008. Sales are on the decline so it is pretty believeable.

Honda sold just 63,124 S2000 for the first 8 model years...that is about the number of Civics they sell in THREE months! The S2K does have some collector potential.

Doesn't matter whether Honda makes 100k more. I this car.

I get back in my RL after driving my S and the RL feels like a Lexus (e.g. soft steering, soft brake pedal) now.

The S2000 was voted "most likely to be a future classic" in 20 years, by Classic Car Magazine or some such.

I think they'll hold their value very well. e.g. of the breed may/might include the last gen supra or the last gen rx7, both of which are japanese sports car that seem to hold their values extremely well if kept in top shape.

Not to mention that lack of driver talent has send many a S2000 to the wrecking yard = even less on the road.

A giant MEH for Honda if they delete the only remaining sports car in their lineup. They need this car as an icon if nothing else.

Come to LA and count how many you see on the road on a daily basis.

If these cars become a collectors item it will be a LONG time from now. Its not like these are limited run cars. perhaps the CR edition.
