Technical question to the S2k guys: Can you have an AP1 but with a facelifted AP2 body?

It's possible. You can make an AP1 look just like an AP2 except for the exhaust tip, but I don't see why you would want to do that unless you have to have the AP1 drivetrain and AP2 looks.

As weird as this may sound, I drove an AP2 S2k this weekend and a '02 NSX. As much as I loved the NSX, the relatively CHEAP "fun factor" of the S2k is making me wonder if 30-40k more for an NSX worth it.

Hmm, now think about what could be done to an S2k with 30 grand

Honestly I find the S2k to be an almost perfect car. I've seen people heavily modding them and it looses it's appeal to me.

If I were to get a S2k, it would have to be 02-03. Earlier years have the "weak valve spring" issues, and I don't care for the 8k on the AP2. The AP2 rims are also pretty heavy.

^ +1. I wouldn't mod an AP2 S2k, except for maybe a factory lip.

Interesting scenario.... I drove my friends NA1(92) NSX, and honestly because of how tall I am, I cannot comfortably drive it. The NSX (pre targa) was not made for anyone over 6'0 tall. I had to sit sideways or else my head was smashed uncomfortably against the roof.

+2. I don't have he slightest inclination to mod my S right now. The power mods are not very good for either AP1 (which I have) or AP2, other than supercharging. The appearance mods are not appealing right now. I only want new tires but am going to wait for the stock S02s to wear out.

Back to vacation mode...

+3, with the exception of the stereo (I am a big music nut and the distortion from the stock speakers with the top down is terrible) and some basic aesthetics. I'm planning on doing the following, then saving up for big mods like rims and an sc

-upgraded stereo with amped components and eventually a sub
-jdm red emblems (to match the red interior)
-clear sidemarkers/cleared headlights
-drop (this isnt a big priority at the moment but would be nice)

Love the car EXACTLY the way it is. Too much R&D was done into each and every component, as evidenced by the fact that $2000 cat-back exhausts and $400 intakes don't make any appreciable power and sacrifice driveability.

I even don't mind the stereo. In 06 they added 4 more speakers (total 8) and changed the HU. Its not too bad - you can hear it top down on the hwy now.

The AP2 wheel & tire combo is actually lighter compared to AP1 wheel w/ tire, and it is a noticable amount too (0.7 lb on each corner). Best Motoring from Japan did a test where they slapped on AP2 wheels & tires onto an AP1 and saw an increase in track lap times, while an AP2 with AP1 wheels & tires observed an equal decrease.

Keep in mind the tire sizes increased from 205 (front) / 225 (rear) on the AP1 to 215 (f) / 245 (r) on AP2... yet are still lighter! Interesting stuff IMO.

Here's the link to that BM video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9gtu1QgxxuE (Wheel/tires section starts at ~7:45)
It is important to note that the JDM 04-05 S2000's didn't receive the 2.2L engine... hence I believe the differences in feel & lap times are much more indicative of the suspension & wheel/tire tweaks Honda implemented.

So no one, by that I mean even people in real life, S2ki, etc. mods the suspension? Even if they do, does it make a notable or at least positive difference? I rode shotgun, in a stock S2000 of all things, and never got to notice how the car handled because it was all freeway.

And even though power mods, especially catbacks don't do much, I like the sound of this S2000.

I thought that was proven to be a fake? Or at least, so I hear on S2KI. My ears would split from driving that car.

There's an S2000 suspension roundup in Sport Compact Car magazine -- the ride quality of some setups were rated better than stock.

If he ran an open ITB setup it very well could be that loud, when he puts air filters on it, it should quiet down quite a bit, not to mention be much safer for the engine. Also, I don't think it is insanely loud unless you are WOT, the S2k is loud at WOT even in stock trim.

People mod the suspension.. but to get GAINS over stock and not just the look of a lowered car, you have to be prepared to shell out $$$$ on quality parts.

LOLz!

I still have to put my 1:18 model in the office. I've had a terrible time getting my two-year-old away from the model. He keeps trying to pull the thing out of the box, so I had to keep it out of his reach.

iTimmy, the car sounds beautiful in its loudness stock. I look forward to that when I step in to drive it.

shrykhar, I bought SCC and read the suspension comparo. I felt it was well-done because it didn't declare a winner--simply too many variables to do so. I'm still planning on remaining stock until I'm used to driving on the stock setup. Given that I've only put less than 1000 miles on the car in the two months I've owned it, that'll take a while. And when I do, SSMTL01's statement that quality parts cost is definitely correct.

Although I don't have kids, all my car models are in my office (NSX, NISMO Z, SUPRA, 2 GTR's, 240z). I'm afriad of my nephew tearing them up!

Modding the suspension... There are many who will just throw lowering springs onto any car and call it a day because they want to be "lowered" , however, in a car like the S2000, if your going to change the suspension, you had better do your homework first, or else your handling ability will suffer and the car will not perform as well as it would with the OEM suspension.
This also depends on what you do with the car... if you just drive it on weekends, and never have any intention on ever having it on an Auto-X or HPDE track, than you can probably just get away with lowering springs (even if it does make you lose some ability).
There are some good tried and true suspension upgrades such as the KW V2 &V3, and the Bilstein PSS9 for people who are real track enthusiasts.

Also, that video I have read is a fake exhaust note. It's some kind of F1 sound layover (not sure what the techincal term is).

I had decided when I bought my TL that it would stay relatively stock and my next project car would be an AP1 S2000...this thread has just made it that much clearer and made it more urgent for me. Time to find a second job, I suppose.

All of you who have posted pics on this thread have beautiful S2K's. I'm jealous. LOL

It's fairly easy to get the AP2 parts. Mine is an 03 with AP2 bumpers and tail lights. Bilstein PSS9 coilovers, Volk wheels, Amust Titanium exhaust.

I've had it for 5 years and it's still a blast! Perfect 3rd car.
