I can't believe anyone can defend such an idiotic design - putting a basic driving function like adjusting wipers on the touch screen which forces you to take your eyes off the road; really? How did this pass regular automotive regulations anywhere? Did they put the high beams on the touchscreen too? Might as well put the turn signals on there too while we're at it.

I'm of the opinion that anything that ever needs to be adjusted while driving should *never* be located on a screen; especially one where the contents can be changed. It's really no different from texting and driving.

The possibility of no wiper stalks took me off guard too. Therefore totally understand your sentiments, however I don’t think Tesla is completely off the path here. I believe there is a stalk for the wipers to sweep the windscreen once. They can always reprogram it. They can also program the steering wheel controls or voice controls to manage the wiper functionality. Let’s see what they come up with.

Dude, they were ruled illegal. That is the definition of off the path here.

And rightfully so - only allowing someone to adjust the speed of the wipers through a touchscreen interface is dumb as hell.

I totally get it. Can someone who has a Tesla confirm if there is indeed a stalk for wipers? If yes, then it’s a simple matter of reprogramming it, isn’t so?

The physical button for wipers is mounted on the turn signal stalk. A single press is one wipe, press and hold activates the washers.

Even if they did have the stalk for the wiper (and it's meant for a one-tap mist function), it's not a simple reprogramming job. They can go the route that BMW did at one time to adjust the intermittent wiper setting (second tap decides the amount of time for the intermission); but even then, how would one know if it's meant for a second mist, or to actually adjust the speed? It'll make things even more complicated and confusing.

Imagine having to do this while doing 150mph on the Autobahn and the weather changes suddenly, and you're not satisfied with what the AI thinks your wiper should be doing?

I always thought it was odd they didn't put a traditional stalk for the windshield wipers. i mean if it ain't broke why "fix" it?

To add to the above, I can potentially see where a double-tap/click on the wiper button can be programmed to cycle through the various wiper speeds. It's not perfect, but certainly still better than messing around with the submenus on the touch screen to get to the actual controls.

Now as to why this wasn't in the original design....

There, Tesla better pay me for the design idea.

One tap for mist, double tap for regular operation, three taps for faster operation. That is besides that fact that it has automatic wiper function as well, right???

Tweet your ideas, you might get credit.

That is much easier than designing something new

BMW has its own share of wiper problems... trust me... over engineer something that is so simple in the name of "cool features" is making things more complicated...

But at least i dont have to take my eyes off the road tho...

Does it have auto wipers?

In any case, I'm sure they'll just fix it by adding a wiper stalk via software update.

It has auto wipers, but in the guys case it wasn't wiping at an appropriate speed. so he had to use the screen to manually adjust the speed.

Auto wiper rarely does its job correctly.... it is either too fast or too slow... or too early or too late....

I don't know, mine works amazing, I love it. Way better than using the intermittent speed control.

^ The MB auto wipers on the C work really well also. Only with very light/misty rain does it underperform.

I guess we all have different expectation of the wipers... which is WHY it should not be an auto...
Some ppl dont mind the lighting wiping speed... i personally never use it...

Since the advent of automatic wipers, I have actually used the hand wiper controls only very rarely. For example: cleaning up windscreen after a bug got squashed on it.

^ no matter how annoying those auto wipers are to me, at least there is a physical lever that i can use when i am not satisfied with its performance..... without taking my eyes off the road

Tesla on the other hand is on a different level...
How they thought putting the control on a screen in the middle of the car was a good idea is beyond me..

My coworker has one. The stalk situation is really strange. One of them is the shifter, which I guess makes sense in an old fashioned kind of way but I would keep trying to use that stalk erroneously.

Like i said. instead of Hey BMW.. just program it to say Hey Elon Musk, turn on my wiper... that is the easiest way.

For people who prefer to be driven by auto pilot, instead of driving themselves, it is the most logical solution.

I wish one day Tesla will offer wipe my ass feature on their seat.

I don't know if you are joking or not, or you are simply unaware of the recent happenings.

What was shown on the right side picture (in post #731) is the 150m hop test flight of the Starship prototype, (the spacecraft which is going to take humanity to Mars and possibly beyond)

My C does not.
2 intermittent settings: Low & High sensitivity. I've rarely used the high setting. Low usually is more than sufficient. Both have full range of wiper speed control.

E has the same low and high sensitivity settings apart from the manual controls. I rarely touched those as well.

I think my VW has like 4 settings for sensitivity. I also leave it in the lowest, it's sometimes even too much at that point.

It does.. but i dont feel any difference

It has auto (with 3 sensitivity levels. all feel the same to me), slow and so fast it makes me dizzy...

But it does not really matter to me as there is no rain here. Maybe that is why no one complained in LA about Tesla's wiper because no one ever use them...

Every single ICE car owner who buys a Tesla is more or less a permanent conversion to EV and an attrition of Legacy auto customer base.
Every EV that a legacy automaker sells is a permanent conversion to EV. More and more of them are joining the fray (even though belated and half heartedly). Those customers will inevitably compare it to Tesla and some will see how good a deal is Tesla. Guys it’s only a matter of time (only when, not if) before the ICE industry crumbles.

i think most Tesla owner when experiance it. try to sell it within two years and goes back to ICE cars.
you can see it California registeration decline in half. If Model Y was so popular. it should have been replacing the older Model S and Model X and Model 3 at higher rates.
