In some areas, yes.

Exibit A - 2005 Acura RL

Let's say the unveiled model doubles the sales without any other major changes besides sheet metal? What would your explanation for the sales increase be?
Problem with that question is that it won't take much to double sales from 300 to 600. I can easily see that happening with fresh styling alone. The real question is how long will that sales increase last?

Even the current RL had +200-300% sales increase over the previous gen for a few months.

OK, lets say the car sells 800/mo (about what Honda expects - 20K/yr) with sheet metal alone for the next 2 years?

The Honda folks we're not idiots for the idea but the implementation.

Does 800 a month not come out to 9,600 a year? They would have to sell like 1,666/month in order to reach their original sales target. I do not even think that the GS350 or M35/45 sell that much (but they are close).

This is still just a refresh so I am not expecting anything too spectacular ... so I see a lot of people complaining not unlike after the debut of the TL refresh/Type-S:

No SH-AWD??
No 300+ HP??!
No ventilated seats?!?

I have no doubt that Acura is going to do what they can but w/ refreshes, 1 tends to be painted into a corner & can only do so much until the full model change.

I think Honda would be ecstatic with 800 a month for 2 years. But I seriously doubt that will happen.

And ya, 800 per month is about 20K over 2 years which is maybe what you meant.

thanks, yea 20K over 2 years. 800/mo would barely be catching the bottom of the pack and most direct competitor - the A6.

Should be unveiled any minute now.

I'd love to hear the announcement. How do they explain the need for the MMC.

Its sad that the RL is so underrated that there are no spy shots of it anywhere.

I cant remember another car that made it to the debut without me seeing it online first.

UPDATE from the press conference:
The car has just rolled out on the floor. 300hp and 275lb-ft from a new version of SOHC VTEC from 3.7L of displacement. The new version of VTEC incorporates dual lift profiles on the exhaust valves as well as the intake. The styling updates are noticeable but it's questionable whether the changes will be received well. As rumored, the car offers realtime weather (from XM) as well as cooled and heated seats (10-way adjustable on the passenger side now too). The headlights and taillights have adopted some curvature which looks a little bit like what BMW's done with their headlights. Photos coming soon.

Wow. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse at Acura.

Did they miss all the complaints about looking too much like an Accord?

Front looks like a mix of MDX, RL, and TL, with some odd lines.

Wheels look like they came off the 04-05 TSX, just bigger...

Wonder what the rest of the car looks like?

If its possible to sell less than 300 RL's a month, this is the way to do it.

After looking at it for a bit i think its fine. Just that grill is what kills the whole thing.

I like the headlights and the rear is nicely done. Doesnt scream flagship but i guess that was expecting too much from them.

they just don't want to compete, do they?
I'd like to see some int. pics, but so far, I'd take the current model anyday...
They haven't given me ONE reason why I shouldn't go out and buy a M35/45.

well the initial estimates were, what, 306?

so acura didn't disappoint that much.

but yea. maybe they don't know realize what the accord looks like?

and this does make the previous model look much nicer.

neuronbob should be happy right now.

after looking at it a bit more, i agree that the headlights and the rear look nice. problem is, it looks way too similar to the accord (again).

but the grille...

is it safe to assume the next TSX will have it too?

The entire car is just a bandage from the styling to the engine to the transmission. I guess we shouldn't have expected more since we knew it was only a MMC.

You should see how RL owners are responding. I am personally VERY glad I own a 2006 RL. It is a looker in the front compared to that....that.....I don't even know what to call it.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...&page=41&pp=25

The interior is great, though. The rear is not bad at all. The torque number is pretty good....remember that torque is what you need for acceleration, not hp.

I guess I shouldn't have been joking yesterday about the resale value on my RL. I think it's going to go up.
