TLX Type S release thread; prices, trims and availability
#561
I don't know about the US market. But for Canada, it is known that there will only be 240 units of 2021 MY TLX Type-S. My dealership told me that for the 2022 MY, there will also only be 240 units as well.
So there is a high possibility that if the 2021 Type-S models are sold out fast, then the 2022 models will carry an even heftier ADM surcharge ($10K more, $20K more, ....). Remember that some US dealerships are already adding ADM to the current 2021 models.
So it is really a gamble. Which way will cost more ? One-year depreciation cost from buying the 2021 MY or the extra ADM premium from buying the 2022 MY ?

I can't imagine Acura would leave money on the table by holding back production once the chip shortage is sorted out, since all the ADM goes to the dealership, not to Acura.

TLX A-Spec & Type S Test Driven
I drove a TLX A-Spec a month ago overnight, while my pristine 05 RL was in for service. I did note the Fit & Trim was not as exquisite, but still appreciated.
I awaited the Type S for comparison being used to the SH AWD system's performance; as if driving on rails.
This week I Test Drove the TLX Type S, Scanlon Acura Ft Myers FL. The Tiger Eye Pearl with Orchid Interior is appealing though my preference is different.
The Manufacture's national allotment of 1200 to 2000 Cars with their color scheme dedication is poor; leaving us to grab and squabble.
The performance is exhilarating having a generous Torque band with seamless gear shifting, a good exhaust note, and decisive handling under duress.
The infotainment system is fine, not having to stretch for a touch screen as a seasoned driver is a plus!!
Thanks to the Acura team's build, only because they are nit pickers to perfection.
The ride from Comfort through Sport + is noticeable and appealing.
For me the 15.9 Gal Fuel tank with a claimed 25 MPG can only be in 'Comfort mode'; leaving a diminished range for you long haulers.
There is a Timing Belt (not chain) on the 3.0L Engine for those who care.
I did not get an answer on the Drive Shaft, still being Carbon Fiber.
There is no Auto Tilt steering column, rear window Sun Shade or 360 Camera view (sad).
Some large inventory dealerships do not require $$ down, but have marked up the price (up to +10k).
The ride is safe and sweet so I may go for an offered BB-TLX.

Back on 6/11 he text me and stated I was in August production. So I'm assuming he honestly has no info from Acura and is just guessing.

Did you all see this? An Acura dealer in Indiana somehow has a Type S with the Y Spokes. WTH! Saw it on Instagram and verified via their website.

Called them. Stated that that is their demo unit and what they received. Only has 11 miles on it. Then he said they won't be getting anymore for 2 months or so. Forgot to ask about deposit and price. Apologize.

In the ADM/test drive thread, we already have 30 of the 273 Acura dealers in the USA mentioned, in 48 hours, a pretty good knowledge base already. Keep them coming! Helps the community to know where to order/buy.

Text my dealer last night about my order with the Y spokes. He text back was...So HPT cars are coming out after the regular one. You are the only person with a HPT order from our dealership. We don't have a production date yet.

The one I drove had 180 miles. I went there on 5th day of test drives. You're probably right, press cars couldn't have put on more than 20-30 miles max.

The one I test drove had the "standard" wheel and tire package. In person, I was actually surprised how much I liked them. Tho the Y-Spokes do look nice, the car may just be too big and dwarf the thin spoke design. I don't know, I'll have to reserve judgment until I see them in person.
Personally, if I were to get the Type-S, I'd get the standard wheels and have them as my "winter set". From the factory, they come with Pirelli Cintauro A/S, which actually have very good reviews across the board, but they're probably not the best in snow. I'd probably look into getting a nice set of beefy 5-spoke wheels if I were to go with anything. Maybe a 1/2" drop all around and call it a day in the appearance department. Then again, the more I think about it, the more I'd probably just leave it completely alone and spend all the money on performance. This will be the biggest factor for me. If people can make reliable power out of this powertrain (450+wHP), I'd opt for that over doing anything to the appearance outside of window tint.
Also things to consider about the Y-Spokes ... they come with high performance summer tires, so if you're anywhere where it snows or gets below freezing, you're going to have to change them out (unless you enjoy driving into ditches and trees). Another thing too, unless you have a garage or longer driveway, I'd be weary, at least for the first few years, about parking it unattended. Acura uses the same bolt pattern as Honda, and I'd assume the offset works on most other models. There are plenty of undesirables who would be licking their chops at getting their hands on a free pair to put on their rusted out, 15yr old Accord that's way too low and has way too much negative camber.

Just got back from my test drive. Limited to 10 mins on a busy road filled with lights, so couldn't really get a feel for it. Acceleration was about as expected, transmission was quick to shift (had in sport mode the entire time), and downshifting when approaching lights was aggressive. Car felt planted on the three turns that I was able to make.
Demo car had 22 miles on it and already had a buyer for when it can be sold in 60 days. Best guess for getting one in for me was October. They have a few coming in over the next month or so, pretty much all in white.
Funny part is I've only seen 3 or 4 TLXs on the road and happened to be behind one on the way to the dealer. Car really looks low and wide. Nice looking overall.

This reminds me of Volvo's Polestar Engineered fiasco. For 2019 they said this would be an ultra limited run, with only 20 S60 and 20 V60 Polestar Engineered cars available, and they promptly sold out in 37 minutes. Then in 2020 they opened the floodgates up and built as many as they could sell (which is how I got mine).
I can't imagine Acura would leave money on the table by holding back production once the chip shortage is sorted out, since all the ADM goes to the dealership, not to Acura.

As I stated before, hopefully Acura rams these down dealer's throats so they're forced to sell, and penalize them with reduced or no discounts for overstock or complaints of dealer mark-up. As you said, I hope people remember the dealers who are charging mark-ups, or holding their friggin' demo units hostage for down payments. I already know the two dealers I'll buy from if I do decide on it, and of the six dealers in my area, only one is further away from my house. The rest will never receive any of my business.

For the love of the car gods…my usual local dealer has a Type S coming in Apex Blue/Black, which is the spec I’d buy. They know me too well . Thankfully, I’m doing a cruise and car show most of the day tomorrow, so I can avoid seeing it in person and becoming tempted.

I had forgotten how frustrating it is to keep a dark car clean. If I breakdown and get a Type S it’s going to be white with the red or orchid interior.

With the comments on YouTube/social media acting like tweens at a boy band concert about the "Return of the Type-S" ... I'm pretty sure there's no shortage of people who are going to be flaunting their brand new Type-S is " 'bout to take ova the scene!"

Just got back from test drive #2. Went to a different dealer about an hour away. They had a black/black Type S as their demo; had 97 miles on it. I personally don't want another black car, but for those of you that do, the black is stunning. The pearl/metallic finish is very noticeable and it looks clean. I prefer the contrast of the other colors with the black Type S bits (splitter, spoiler, etc), but the car looks really good. The regular Type S wheels are also growing on me too. I'm still probably going to hold out for the Y spokes, but you should see these in person, because they do look pretty good, even with the black paint.
The experience was the complete opposite of my limited drive yesterday with the other dealer. Spent about 20-30 minutes on rural backroads with no other cars around. One thing that really stood out was how planted the car was on uneven road surface with lots of dips/bends/hills. Definitely felt at home here. I can see this car being a reason to just go for a drive somewhere.
Driving in sport (didn't use sport +) was perfect. I love the way the car shifts. Upshifts are spot on and never felt a need to use the paddles. The car always seemed to be in the right gear. Even when driving back to the dealer on the freeway, the car didn't feel like it was 2 gears higher than where it should be when cruising. Sport mode seems like a good overall mode to keep the car in.
Acura makes a damn good steering wheel too. The grip and overall feel of the wheel is perfect.
One part that will take some getting used to is the brakes. No complaints with stopping power, but it seems to take a little more pedal to get them to start slowing things down. Noticed this on both test drives.
The car could also be a few decibels louder. The noise that does come out is refined and fitting for the car, but I could use a little more of it.
This is a lower volume dealer (only getting 2 per month) and haven't finalized the pricing on their "lot fee" (ADM) or accessories. That's a bit of a bummer, so hopefully the one closer to me sticks to their word of MSRP and doesn't play games with the price.

What you're describing sound similar to what happened on my car when I replaced OEM for ceramic performance pads. A lot less aggressive up top but when you get some heat in them from some harder stops they become telepathic in their bite. I'd be real impressed if Acura went to that level of detail on the Type S vs. throwing the regular TLX compound.

I also just got back from a 30 minute test drive. Reviews are spot on, especially the one from savagegeese. Half a second of dead feeling when WOT from a stop, something the S4 does a better job giving you the sink into seat feeling, I don't think it's turbo lag but more '4220 lbs' lag. German leather still remains better than the TLX (especially the one in S4 / M cars). One thing that did surprise me though was the sound, videos don't do it justice. It was louder than my ATLP exhaust on 3GTL!

Anyways if someone wants to start digging through Service Manual information for the TLX, it looks like the "3.0T" is already there and I'm working on ripping it. Have at it: https://unknowntransportation.com:8443/Service/TLX/

I test drove the Tiger Eye with the Orchid interior and the combo was quite pleasant. It surely grows on one, not at all overly drastic.
I noticed light rain soil showed up noticeably on the rear. For me Splash Guards are a must.
I opted for the Apex Blue Pearl with the Orchid interior.

They figure that if you drive it, you're not as likely to buy it, because it's not THAT amazing compared to what else you can get for the same ADM.

I pulled them on my RDX. It’s been a few weeks and no adverse effects. Just be aware that it does get rid of ANC as well as the pumped in exhaust audio, but overall, I think the car is quieter and more pleasant without it. I’m glad I did it.
