I wish we could get a thread that is just the facts and pictures without the 80 pages of discussion... My head hurts from reading...

ohh don't worry about that u will see that by the end of this year. im getting my j36 completed and dropped into my car within the next two months. then going with this turbo!!! i know paul actually had made a turbo kit on a j36 build he did, but due to the dyno/tuning shops stupidity it blew at about 25psi. However, if if remember correctly paul's j36 + turbo build was able to put down at least 500whp easily. the weakest link on these j-series engines seem to be weak rods, which would need to be addressed if high boost is wanted.

It was a bit over 500WHP @4200 RPM @ 28.4 PSI, yeah the engine was only supposed to get 10-12PSI, the tuner did not bother to look at the boost gauge right in his face on the upper sterring colum cover.........

I wish we knew but no one has made a pass yet. With 400whp and 3,500lbs a safe guess would be mid 12s@116-118mph. There's enough there to run upper 11s if someone has the balls to run it on tire and I suspect the first 11 second one will be an auto assuming we can get the 5at to hold together.

As for the J36 build, if you're upgrading internals anyway, you might as well do it. You'll have better spoolup and street manners at a given power level.

However, you can make any amount of power you desire with the J32 given the airflow of this engine. It's really an issue of how much power it can withstand but the challenge of actually making the power is over. 15-17psi will put you around 600whp.

This is where it's debatable of whether the J36 is worth it. For a turbo capable of 600+whp, it's going to start getting a little laggy on a 3.2 especially with lowered compression. This is where you may want to move to the larger engine for better spool.

How is it that coming along, if I may ask? Didn't a few folks ask you on the best way to build it as I recall you once having a detailed look at the tranny?

cool, hopefully our engines can withstand 600+ whp. i really am excited to see JR test to the breaking point of a 3rd gen tl block. any guesses guys how much whp the factory stock j32 block can hold?

I was pretty tired when I posted that last night. What I meant to say is the stock J32 should be capable of over 600whp with no other power mods.

But you probably shouldn't attempt it without good rods and pistons.

They've hit what, 420-ish whp? That's over 500hp at the engine. 550 at the engine is where I would start getting nervous but I've seen engines hold up to insane amounts of power as long as they have a good tune.

IHC, sorry but these rods bend REAL EASY and are no where near the stregnth of say one of your 3.8L rods, they are only 14mm wide due to the bore spacing, even at 500CHP they won't last a real long time in a 3.2L, the shorter 3.7L rods will handle a bit more, but really would not want to push too much more than 500CHP.

Anyone see my wideband 02 question? Where can I get one at a store? Ie: any oem ones I can use?

Also, should I mount it on my H pipe? (I'm true dual) or will one bank do just fine?

No kidding? So the physical rod size is somewhat limited due to spacing? Have you done many aftermarket I-beam or H-beam rods for the J32? Just wondering how much of an improvement they are. The reason I keep mentioning these high hp levels is to my knowledge no one until now has monitored knock and the ultra high pressures caused by detonation might be prematurely bending the rods.

I took a quick look at what few specs I could find. It looks like the J35 shares the same bore and a longer stroke than the J32. I had no idea Honda even made an undersquare engine.

So does the bore spacing limit the bore size on the J-series? It seems like a J32 with the stock stroke and long rods with a larger bore would be a more effective and reliable power maker than the longer stroke J35.

The larger bore should bring better breathing while not effecting piston speed but I'm sure there's a reason people don't do this.

What are the options for increasing the bore on the J32? I'm sure just boring it .200" will probably take you into the water jacket but has anyone tried machining the stock sleeves out and a portion of the aluminum cylinder and throwing something much stronger like a Darton sleeve with a larger bore in there?

We did a 944 turbo and increased the bore to take it from a 2.5L to a 2.8L with bore only. We machined the entire cylinder out of the block except for the last inch. Machined a set of very beefy Darton sleeves down at the bottom to fit into what was left of the stock cylinder to set it in place. Then we added a deck plate to stabilize things and set the sleeves to sit up .006" above the deck so the heads would have extra clamping force and hold everything in place. It would be expensive to do but I would rather go this route, it seems like the J35 is a step in the wrong direction if all out power is what we're after.

Sorry for all the questions.

Look at pep boys if you have them, if not look in the phone book for local speed or tuner shops. Summit racing is quick and way better priced.

Put it on your H pipe, you want a aggragate of both banks or buy two of them. I personaly use the AEM 30-4100

Sorry for all the questions.
Yes the Js are a VERY tight engine, LOL it's overall dimensions are the same as a K with intake and exhaust manis. Stock there is only 6mm between the bores @ a 89mm bore, the largest Darton reccomends on thier sleeves for boost is 90mm (same as a J37 stock block). I have gotten Paulter Rods ($1200 a set) but they are quite beefy compared to stock and of course the 90XX steel they are made from helps.

One of the reasons I love the Js is the power to weight ratio fo the engine, NA I get a bit over 300WHP (I plan to squezze another 20-30 out) out of a 350ish lb engine, thats about 1.2lbs per WHP, there is nothing else out there short of a exotic that can touch that. Not to mention the overall package size is soo dmn small and can be fit in so many chassis without issue.

Here are some pics of one of the blocks I have sleeved and Paulter J37 rods I had them make for me, Paulter also has prints for J35.

I gave one suggestion on the previous page, post #3196. Here it is again in case you over looked it.

Innovate Motorsports (click here) is considered to be among the best available. It can be purchased directly from the Innovate website.

The Auto Meter Gauge Mounting Cup (click here) is a great companion to the gauge.

Rodney in the tristate area .. Where the hell is Opel?!!

Kudos to you Rodney & John? J&R with help from Paul have done an excellent job.. You guys worked hard and diligently to produce some of the baddest TL's to hit the street.

Again thank you guys for been patient and working with us ,delays are certainly not intentional it's just sometimes out of our control but on a good note it's all coming together and kits are been prepared and shipped .....
Clarification again I've seen a lot of post saying the kit is been released with 420+ whp NOT TRUE at least for base models ......everyone is getting there car tuned which is recommended due to various different conditions ect ..
JANDR recoommends 7-8 psi which will be around 370-380 whp ,which is right at the power level we recommend ..............................................
The TYPE S models will be released @ 400 whp.

I will be doing my install once I get the clutch. I will try to get some pics but it's being done by a shop, so I will see what I can do.

yo Rodney just wondering you said for the Type-S the tune will be for 400whp, is this for manual only or Auto as well, would you be able to do a base tune for 350whp for the 5at TL-S??

You can lower the boost to whatever level you want. If you run a few Psi less that the current tune, you could tone it down to 350WHP.

^^ this is true....I am highly considering this mod, but want to wait till I'm out of warranty or if I magically come across a lump sum of money...lol but have my eyes glued to this thread for info on how the turbo's are going in the installed TL's......Also to all of our knowledge there isn't a Auto TL with this turbo set-up correct?
