I have read rumors elsewhere that people are getting $200 credits from apple. I don't know deals though.

ya my buddy just bought one (iphone) last week and talked to them and he is gettin a credit since he fell in the "2 weeks prior" period or something like that. he just briefly mentioned it though. so at least if you very very recently bought one you aren't getting screwed.

but everyone else who bought early is probably not feeling all that great hah.

i'm sure for some people ou there, having the newest and latest apple product before anyone else is worth the extra $200.

Apple stores are selling outselling AT&T stores 7 to 1 in Apple phones sales. Apple sold more phone in July than the initial release. I guess with the price dropped it's about to get bigger.

ya, i'm a bit disappointed.

when i pay an "early adopter fee" it's because i want to have something 4-6 months before most other people (i won't lie), but $200 for getting it 5 weeks in advance is fucking stupid.

not to mention the new "premium features" they announced today, yet another way for Apple to skim a nickel or dime off the top before FIXING the features the iPhone already has.

also the big issue - resale value. one thing apple has always had going for it is that their products could always be eBay'd for a reasonable sum for sometime after purchase, which is what made Apple's habit of releasing new products every few months "stomachable". with this price drop they've completely destroyed the iPhone's resale value, which means when they have a new iPhone not only will it be egg on the face of the consumers who already own the iPhone, but Apple is going to lose out on a ton of sales opportunities from repeat buyers.

True, they may lose some repeat buyers but by dropping the price as much as they have, they have opened the flood gates because price point is no longer a price barrier. You are going to see a lot more people with iphones now, that's for sure. I'm no fan of apple, but at $399 even without 3g, this phone just became a whole lot more appealing. I only hope this will spur nokia to drop the price on the n95! And don't forget, the 4gb version is now $299 while supplies last. I think i'll be picking one up later today!

ya, the real sales numbers didn't look too hot. They had to do something to get more people buying the product...

you really gotta blame apple with their stupidity of setting the initial price at $600. I read that it cost apple $250 for each iphone. That is 140% margin. Yea. Really smart.

actually after reading AQUI NO!'s comment, I change my mind.

it probably was apple's strategy from the beginning. they knew there'll be many people buying the iphone regardless of the price at the launch. when things settle down, they drop the price, and the rest of the potential buyers jump in. now THAT is smart.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so pissed right now!!!!!! So I walked in to the apple store after work hoping to see new iPods (wasn't really expecting it) and didn't see any. So I jump on the mac pro and hit up the iTunes site and see the new iPods click on the iPod touch and I'm looking at the tech specs. I see 8gb and 16gb only and then I immediately cursed steve and stormed out of the store!!

Seriously, this is why I can't stand apple. The seem to get it half right. Touch screen great but only 16gB. I understand flash is expensive and that's why you shouldn't use it, look at the Archos pmp it's got like 160gb hDD in it. They say the put the 80gb into a slimmer case than the previous gen 30gb (which I own) how could they not put an 80 into the iPod touch? I've used the iPhone for about 30min and it's about the same thickness as the 30gb iPod video so why the hell would the only put 16gb in there!!!! I know that an 80gb harddrive is cheaper than 16gB of flash. They should've dropped the classic all together and just thrown a hdd in the iTouch (that's what I'm calling it from now on, I own the trademarks).

Plus what's with 160gb!!! Are you kidding me, they're joking right!! That's overkill!! I mean if you had a bigger screen sure but a 2.5 in screen? I ain't watching no video on that. I have one and it's almost pointless it's so small!! Who has 160gb of music? That's ridiculous!! I think I have a pretty big collection, I only know one person with a bigger one and mines right now at about 19gB (which is why I ain't getting no iTouch) which is over 3000 songs. The only use I see for the 160gb is to use it as dual use. Like as an extenal HD, especially when Leopard is released and time machine is supposed to be used with an external drive you could use the 160gb (if time machine compresses files) to store a backup of your computer in case something happens to it.

I guess I'm waiting for the iTouch too or I'll see what MS has to offer even though I prolly won't want it.

Apple close yet so far away!!

Really disappointing coming from Apple. I have no doubt that they know what they are doing, however, it's still somewhat of a surprise.

I was so ready to purchase the iTouch ASAP, however, the storage kills it. Also, not sure why they will not introduce Bluetooth into the iTouch. Starting to dislike Apple once again...

5.1% drop in stocks today, but the market wasn't so hot today anyways... http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=AAPL

I saw this and thought it was great
originally posted by some do on engadget
8gig and 16gig?! WTF?! You build a gorgeous iPod with video, wifi, etc and you only give me 16gigs?! I've got 40+ of music, and god knows how much more in video!

And what about bluetooth? Where the F* is bluetooth?! My 40 bucks with activation SE phone comes with stereo bluetooth for god's sake, so what's your excuse?

Bleh I'm going to be sick. This is like getting the car of your dreams, but they only offer it in hot pink with zebra print seat covers
So I've thought about it just a bit. Why would apple do it. The first that comes to mind and what rings true in almost every single product they make and that is FORM OVER FUNCTION. Apple is more concerned about how something look rather than all it features and capabilites. They cut features all the time in order for their stuff to look good. maybe that's why they're stuff looks so great but doesn't always have all the features that other companies have.

2nd and most acceptable reason is battery life. A hdd uses more battery than flash and so if you were watching a movie that thing would be spinning the whole time and that combined with the big touch screen would probably give it crappy battery life. This isn't as much of a problem with music since music files are usually just a few mb so what the iPod does as spin up the drive and load the song into a small flash cache and reads it of off there and then spins down the drive until just before the next song comes up. It's not streaming off the HDD it just load the song from there into flash.

they did it so they can release another product in 6 months with these features, so that everyone will re-buy the product.

Joe Schmoe user will buy the 16GB iPod touch without thinking twice. I'm not an Apple fan boy or anything, and from a business standpoint they made a good decision. Bitch now if you want, but don't worry, your bigger iPod touch will come eventually. They are just trying to get the early adopters again, people keep falling for it, so why not take advantage of it!

I'm not sure why people are so upset over the hard drive size in the Touch. 16gb holds 32 hours or so of tv quality video. Do you really need to carry around a lot more than that? Are you going to watch a dozen movies before you would be able to sync back up to your computer? I know this is what people said about the original 20gb iPod, but 16gb is sufficient when you consider the increase in both size and price that would be necessary to add more room. This was the least disappointing thing I saw today... well maybe after the starbucks deal.

and I agree completely with you Soopa. The price cut really is a kick in the nuts, along with all of these other useless features coming out before the basic iPhone software is up to par.

I don't like rotating my songs I like having every song I own. I don't like being on the road thinking "man I wanna listen to this song" but oh wait I don't have it currently on my iPod cause I bought the most expensive iPod and therefore I logically don't have anywhere near as much storage space as the signifigantly cheaper version!! Apple could've put a bigger battery in there or maybe added a bigger cache so that it didn't have to spin up the HDD as often. but that might make it a little bigger and can't ever do that. FORM OVER FUNCTION!! FORM OVER FUNCTION!!

OK, with all of this bitching, does anybody know how much more the 32g flash drive cost over the 16g??? Apple is doing away with hdd, the itouch is the same tech as the iphone. Why would Apple do it and put a hdd in it. If you want a larger memory,, just wait it will be here soon enough.

I don't want the phone, an itouch will be in the future, I just need to give Canon some money first.

People will ALWAYS complain about the products Apple releases. You didn't hear people bitching about the Zune's features or the features in all the other cell phones on the market. There was never any crying that the first RAZR didn't have GPS. And I love the "I'm going to wait for the next one." thinking. You'll say the same thing when they next one comes out too. No reason to buy the 2008 model cars, I hear that the 2010 will have much better features! Lets all wait til then!

I'll be getting my new iPhone and one of each of the new iPods if everything goes well with this meeting with Apple tomorrow. You can wish for more features all day but right now, the current versions offer features no one else does and do it better then anyone else does.

you can unlock the iphone rather easily and use it on any network. only problem is you lose some of the cooler network-dependent features like Visual Voicemail.

i'm one of this sites biggest apple fans, and i've praised them for continually upgrading their product line and never have once bitched that something i bought a few months ago was replaced. i didn't even complain that my $7000 Xserve was antiquated in a few short weeks.

this is different.

Don't feel like reading the whole thread... Been too long of a day.

I'm pretty pissed at the discount on the iPhone. I am with Adam on this one. I've had the phone since mid-July and I'm already out $200?

Needles to say I've already put a call into AT&T corporate.

Other products looks cool. I need to go read up on the new gadgets.

Apple makes sexy mobile devices - no doubt about that. The features they lack arent necessarily show stoppers...
The one thing that has to change is their retarded battery replacement crap... I am going to spend $300 on an iPod, then in 1.5yrs fork out $80 to have apple send me a refurb'd replacement for my iPod. Just give me a user serviceable battery - that is all I want! There isnt even a guarantee that your replacement unit has a 'new' battery.

yea i learned about this strategy in my managerial economics class i took spring quarter. makes sense, but man dropping the price this soon does suck.

I wouldn't worry about that. Looks at all the iPods. You can buy replacement batteries for as little as $20 including the tools to open them without causing any damage. You can also find higher capacity batteries. I've opened my iPod a ton (lots of testing with different hard drives and other things related to firmware tooling and such) and never had an issue. By the time you need a new battery, there will be plenty of replacements on the market.

MS gets ragged on all the time about the zune in fact today it was reported that so MS exec gave it a B- grade for a product. MS has had feature like wi-fi for a while but it's sad that Apple beat them to the punch with mobile downloads.

Yeah but up until now, M$ claimed that the Zune was going to be the iPod killer and dumped millions into it. Now they're looking to release a phone that will be an iPhone killer. Bwahahahahaha! I've used the Zune (we had to get one for testing but we touch it as little as possible) and it's horrid. UI is typical M$ crap (made it as iPod as they could without getting sued) and general use it horrid. You wanna put a movie on it? You have to rip it from DVD and encode it, THEN it takes it and re-encodes it with DRM! WTF?! Hell to even use the thing in the first place you MUST give M$ your credit card number online even if you never plan on purchasing music online from them!

I'm pretty pissed at the discount on the iPhone. I am with Adam on this one. I've had the phone since mid-July and I'm already out $200?

Needles to say I've already put a call into AT&T corporate.

Other products looks cool. I need to go read up on the new gadgets.

You're not out $200, you have to have the service for two years, what better phone to have it with. NO??

A lot of phone cost sky high when they first come, then drop like crazy. When VZW first got the razr, I got one, I need BT for the TL, I paid like $250 (one year), shortly afterwards I saw the price go down pretty fast, I've had the phone for 2yrs.
