Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
The bar dropping thing isn't a big deal, not to me anyway. I was simply pointing out the fact that the store demo did it too. I actually don't talk that much on the cell phone. Mainly text and web browsing. Plus, I mainly use my right hand to hold the phone. But I'm still gonna wait til later.
But that screen was simply amazing!

When driving, I generally use the left had to talk and the right hand to hold the steering wheel. Of course this is seldom because of the bluetooth connectivity to the RL.
But regardless, this is BS. I hate all the hassle of switching companies, but the Droid X looks pretty good.

On Jimmy Fallon last night, he had some guest from Engadget on, he brought both the i4 and the Evo (I think, or whatever the first 4g phone is), and side by side, the Evo did looked impressive.
Geezus, this shit is getting pretty warm/hot to the touch.
And I have to keep remembering when I type in landscape not to connect the 2 antennas or I kill off data/cell service

Interesting...
Yet another manufacturing issue?
Just got off the phone with Apple. They're sending me an overnight replacement. They're aware of this issue, and I was told that a batch of phones went out without some sort of protective coating (jives with the comment about clear nail polish).
I got to play with the demo at the Apple Store. There's still 2 lines at 1PM but at least they were covered. I held the demo with my left and didn't lose signal. The surfing on 3G wasn't that impressive as I loaded up the Miami Herald site. The mobile launched fairly quickly but not noticeable from my 3GS. But the full site page never loaded so I said screw it and checked other features. The flash light is bright as hell. The phone feels very solid in my hand. The metal around the edges really improved holding the phone, I really like the flat bottom. The video recording was pretty good even with the plastic over the back. Didn't get to try out any gyroscoping and the employee with the demo was pretty clueless. No yellow spots neither. Glad I didn't go through the stress of waiting for my order or paying $100 as I'm happy with my 3GS.
it's pretty smooth and not sticky in the pocket..
i actually don't mind this.. i wouldn't say i love it... just alright
Issues
From BBC news...
A number of users are reporting problems with their iPhone 4.
Apple's latest device went on sale today, with hundreds of people queuing outside Apple's flagship store in central London for the launch.
The issue relates to the mobile phone signal, with users reporting a drop in signal strength when the phone is held.
The casing of Apple's latest phone is made of stainless steel, which also serves as its antenna.
Richard Warner, who bought his iPhone 4 this morning, contacted BBC News, saying that he thought the phone was "useless in its current state".
"Apple have created a phone that has an antenna on the bottom left-hand side of the phone.
"This means that when you hold it in your left hand, the signal bars slowly fade until there is no signal," he wrote.
A number of videos have been posted on video sharing site YouTube complaining about the reception issue.
One video had an American user running a speed test, with hands on and hands free.
In it, the user 'awington' says that, while holding the phone "it won't even run the test when I am holding the phone...once I let go, it makes a connection and runs the test.
"Hold it a second time, and the upload test will not start."
Social networking site Twitter was full of chatter, with numerous tweets on the reception problems.
The issue might stem from the way the integrated antenna is constructed. One section provides mobile reception, while another is for Wi-Fi.
Some users have speculated that touching the bottom of the phone bridges this gap, affecting signal strength.
However, it is not yet clear whether the problem affects all phones, or if the signal deteriorates when the phone is making a call or only when held in standby mode.
When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone 4 at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, he described the integrated antenna as "really cool engineering".
Apple has yet to make a comment on the current controversy surrounding the latest version of its popular phone.

Flakey screens reported too...
Story here: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...eens-defective
SOME PROPORTION OF Iphone 4 users who unbox their shiny expensive toys are finding that Apple shipped them with dodgy screens.
We know that touchscreen parts are in short supply in Asia at the moment so it appears that Apple could not be too choosy about the ones that ended up in the final product. However it appears that the quality level has slipped a bit.
According to Apple's Iphone support forum, some users are finding that there are colour flaws on their displays.
"On the bottom 10 per cent of the screen there were three blotches about the size of shirt buttons that discolour the screen a brown/yellow colour," one user complained. Another user spotted the problem in the upper left hand corner of the display. Yet others say that they are seeing lines across the screen.
One Iphone 4 bloke who asked others if they had problems had his post pulled, probably because of rules against polling users. Others insist that the problem may not be permanent, apparently hoping that Iphones are magical self-healing devices.
Others say that calls to their Apple Genius bar are backed up and no one is answering.
While there is no doubt that Apple will fix the dodgy displays, it might be tricky for it to do so with the displays in such short supply. It is also not clear what the extent of the problem will be at this point, as boxes are just starting to arrive on people's doorsteps.
No doubt Apple will tell us that the problem is only affecting a small number of users and there will be shedloads of comments below telling us that they had their Iphone 4 delivered and it works perfectly.
This will be cold comfort for those users who pre-ordered them and their screens are broken. The whole point about an Apple product is that you are supposed to spend a fortune on it so it "just works". µ

This has to be the stupid design flaw I've ever fucking seen. My god! I thought you had people testing these phones out in the wild. I'm at a loss for words right now to express the sheer stupidity of this!

FWIW, Engadget said that their review unit didn't have this problem. So maybe mine won't but honestly I don't even want to open it now.

"And, well, we have to mention this -- make sure you hold the phone in your left hand and check to see if reception is affected. We have no idea how widespread this problem is, but it's clearly affecting some people (including us), and you should definitely make sure your phone is trouble-free."
2nd, if you re-read my post... I said it's not a big deal TO ME, because how I use the device. Do I need to explain what "to me" means?
First of all, you have it backwards. People that are claiming reception issues are saying that it happens when you're holding (mostly with the left hand, with the palm pressed ip against the left bumper). NOT when you're NOT holding the i4

Either way, it is STILL a major flaw. So you can't deny that or say well it doesn't affect me when it does in reality. It still has the flaw.

How much of a discount does Verizon give to government employees?
I ask because I think I want the Droid X... ATT discounts my 2100 family plan to $89.99 plus added lines of $9.99. The next thing Verizon has is 2000 family minutes at $129.99... a big difference.

But for me, if I can get a better signal and download speeds as long as I don't hold it in one particular spot, then I vote for the better signal and download speeds. I use my earpiece/headset and bt in my car more than anything so not really a big deal. My 2 are sitting at home (one for the wife), I can't wait to get out of class to play.
what did you use? clear film or anti glare?
i like clarity of no film right now, but i just like the feel of anti-glare one and the fact that it's hard to get a finger-print on those makes me want to put them on this as well
