Apple: iPad News and Discussion Thread
Uuuhhh so none of my 3rd party apps are working. None. They all say waiting underneath them and have an empty progress bar on them. They've been like that for an hour, I tried restarting and makes no difference.
Just figured it out! I have to go into the app store and go to purchased iPad apps and tap the iCloud download button next to each and every one of them. Of course the app store app closes after every app your press so you have to relaunch it between every app. Only 95 more to go.....Good times.

I feel the same way. I thought the split keyboard was going to be fantastic but it seems awkward. Maybe it'll just take time to get used to.
Aside from that how is Typing on the split keyboard?
Well that's a big deal for me, since I'm left handed it's in my head to always use my left hand to hit the y and b. So everytime I have to use those letters it makes me stop for sec. Other than that it's ok, a little better than using the OG landscape keyboard. If I had to choose I'd say that the OG portrait keyboard is the best for me. The split keyboard takes a little to get used to, so you can type without looking, the landscape keyboard is almost as big as a normal keyboard on a laptop so I can type on that without looking when I set the iPad down but it's hard to type with just my thumbs.
The tabbed browsing is very nice. Only complaint is that you can't have background content playing in them. I was listening to a podcast on YouTube in one tab and tried to switch over to another tab and it cut the audio.
It works with audio though. It'll pause video if it's not being shown on the screen but you can have audio on another tab and be surfing in another tab. This also worked in iOS 4
Ok some improvements ive noticed so far. I didn't care for reader in desktop safari but it's useful on the iPad. 1080p video output! Before the hardware supported 1080 but the software was only 720, not with ios 5. I'm typing this on the the split portrait keyboard I'm getting used to it, I like that you can move the keyboard up and down the screen.
I like the tabbed browsing in iChromy better than safari too bad iChromy sucks now as a browser, hopefully it gets better. I'm spoiled by how good it once was and now neither safari or iChromy are as good as it once was so I'm kinda disappointed in both.
Home sharing support is now in music and videos so that's nice, I have no use for twitter integration.
Mark as read capability in email is pretty much the greatest thing since sliced bread, I've been wanting that for quite a while.
iCloud backup is sweet. Here's a tip. iCloud will backup all the files you have in your apps which can eat up a lot of space if your not careful. For example I had an 1080p rip of the anime Akira that I transferred to my file browser app that was 3.75gb stored on my iPad. When I set up iCloud backup it started backing up that big file and they only give you 5gb of backup storage for free so it was almost all gone and it was taking forever to backup. So I had to go into settings and saw that was trying to backup that big file and cancel it
You know what it is about the split keyboard that I don't like is that I can't reach my thumbs far enough across to hit the keys on the other keypad. I can't reach my left thumb over and hit keys on the right pad or vis versa, this slows me down, that and the fact that the spacebar is split in two and harder to hit. Yup I'm sticking to the portrait merged keyboard but I can see how chicks with little hands would like it.

They spent how long baking this app? And it still doesn't work right. Many are complaining about it in the comments section of MacRumors. For me, it works, but kicks me out every two minutes or so and makes me login again. Others are saying it just crashes upon launch. It does look very nice, from the few minutes of use I've been able to mess around with it.
I might be a little late but looks like you can do mirror browsing on Apple TV now with the iPad. I ran out and picked up Apple TV quick while I was downloading iOS5 on the iPad, will try it out later.
Oh true, i'll have to try facetime like that. But don't get your hopes up on the video streaming, it might just be best to drop $30 and get the HDMI adapter for the iPad. I tried video streaming from my media server last night and it worked as good as I thought, not well. It was a 1080p rip of one of the bourne movies and it was beyond unplayable. The reason is because the video goes like this to make it's way to my TV
server > GBe to router > wifi to iPad > wifi to router > wifi to apple TV
too many hops for video and I have a bad ass 802.11n router. Now it will play fine if I plug in the HDMI from the TV to the iPad since it doesn't have to go through as many steps but having the iPad be a middle man between the server and apple TV kills it. Or you could just turn on home sharing an access the file directly from the apple TV. I really don't use my apple TV for much anymore, mainly youtube on the big screen but the xbox 360 is adding that in like a month
