Post Apple: iPad News and Discussion Thread

ZOMG, this is it! Will Steve do it again? Tune in and find out!

The hype for this thing has almost reached pre-launch iPhone hype levels and we don't even know what it looks like or what it does. Rumors on this device have been swirling for years but in the past 6+ months the rumor mill has gone into overdrive. How big is the screen 7, 9, 10, 11 inches? Will it have an OLED screen, how much will it cost $500, $700, $1000, $1500!?!?!? Will it run iPhone OS or Mac OS X or a brand new OS!?!? Will it have a new content delivery system for electronic magazines and newspapers that kills the Kindle!?!?! Will it come with just wifi or with 3G as well? Will it be on Verizon or AT&T, will it be subsidized? Will it render everything you own obsolete!?!?!?!?

ZOMG! I can't take it anymore! We should have all the answers on Wednesday Jan 27th starting at 10am PST.

Hopefully they'll also bump the macbook pros to Core i5/i7 processors and announce iPhone OS 4.0

9to5Mac claims that they've talked to a few content publishers (magazines, newspapers), and those publishers are claiming inside knowledge about the device. Most importantly, that it'll be "[nowhere] near $1000, as has been reported elsewhere."

These publishers 9to5Mac talked to didn't actually see any prototypes, but it was described to them as a 10-inch glass screen that's smaller than a Kindle DX, but "with a similar weight." That the software is going to be the "game changer" is nothing new, but Apple's supposedly going around describing the tablet in comparison to the Kindle as the change from black and white TVs to color.

Other interesting bits: current ebook distributors on the App Store now are going to get screwed once Apple's official one hits, and don't expect a lot of content until "mid 2010 at the very earliest."

Hardware/software-wise, I think it's essentially going to be the "iPhone on steriods" sort of device. I'm not expecting there to be much "gee whiz" factor in the thing itself. IMO, the "gotta have it" factor will come from the content.

As I mentioned in another thread, the success of any tablet device seems *highly* dependent on the content that's intended for it. There has to be some thing that compels people to carry something bigger than their phone but not want to bother doing the same thing on a full-fledged computer.

One thing I'm thinking we might see is the e-print equivalent of podcasting. Just how Apple facilitated people routinely distributing audio/video in a semi-professional fashion, I can see the same sort of thing happening here where you can easily create and distribute e-print publications that people can subscribe to on their iSlate.

It will not have an OLED screen. Rumors are there isnt enough supply for the size screen they want and it would drive cost up too much. We'll see.

The tablet is supposedly going to have a very beefed up version of the iphone OS.

Current Rumors are form function is VERY similar to the 1st gen iphone (aluminum with plastic strip for antenna)
Dock connectors on the top and side for use in different orientation...also compatible with BT keyboards and possibly mice.
Will have wifi and possible OPTIONAL 3G service with verizon or at&t or both. Which leads to another rumor that if its both...each tablet per company looks a little different.
Supposedly Apple has been working with the NYT to bring an app to the tablet for its newpaper...leading into that this tablet among other things will very much compete against the kindle.

Other rumors are the iphone exclusive is over has early as Wed. And Verizon will be iphones will be announced.

Iphone OS4 may also be announced and has been held back because it gives to much away in regards to the tablet.

possible tablet names based on trademarks are: iSlate and iPad

I'm not believing the AT&T losing exclusivity thing. Not yet at least. I think we would've heard some sort of hardware rumor about a CMDA iPhone floating around on Verizon's network or something. Also what about those latest iPhone commercials that say can your phone and your network do this? Verizon iPhones sure won't be doing what's in those commercials. If anything they'll go to t-mobile too but I'd expect t-mobile to have "accidentally" leaked that by now or for Verizon to "accidentally" leak it as well. Like when verizon accidentally said 6 months ago that they'd have the Palm Pre in January 2010

more rumors:
- Apple is expected to have general agreements with major publishers in place by Wednesday, allowing it to tout the partnerships while still leaving "nuts and bolts" details of the arrangements to further negotiations.

- Scrollmotion and other companies serving as middle-men to bring e-books to the iPhone are being cut out of the tablet, with Apple preferring to work directly with the publishers.

- A large library of e-book content for the tablet is not expected until "mid-2010 at the very earliest", although Apple will likely have something to show at the media event.

- Publishers have not been provided access to any tablet prototypes, although the device has reportedly been described to them as having a 10-inch glass screen and smaller than but roughly equal in weight to Amazon's Kindle DX.

- Apple's tablet will not be priced "anywhere near" the $1,000 mark that some have floated as a possible price point.

The rumors of verizon getting the phone this week have been out for about a month. but who knows.

And OLDER rumors for as far back as a year ago speculated verizon would get an "iphone mini"

who knows.

You could say the same thing about podcasts. "Isn't that called an MP3 file?"

There's some interesting conjecture at Ars Technica centered around the fact that Amazon just introduced an app store and SDK for the Kindle. The line of thought goes that Amazon is going to ditch their e-book exclusivity to the Kindle. In fact, they are going to start ditching the Kindle hardware entirely in favor of being a major player in e-books on all major platforms including Apple's. Amazon just introduced the SDK and app store to inject the current generation of Kindle hardware with a bit of relevance while the e-book offerings begin spreading to the rest of the tech world.

That would be a smart move by amazon.

Yes the Kindle may be going the way of the Zune going from a hardware + services system to just mainly a services system (Zune on Xbox 360, the cloud and windows mobile). That's where they make the most money is on the content delivery services. Kindof like netflix being on every device possible TVs, PS3, 360, soon the wii, Windows Vista/7 Media Center, the cloud, roku, etc.

I need to stop being anti-Apple first. Dang my stubbornness...

But, I'm sure it'll be very cool. If only they could rebadge as a Sony or Acer.
