Apple: iPad News and Discussion Thread
Its not a shadow, its a precursor of whats to come. Think of what will hopefully be done with gen 2.
As for 3G pricing...the extra price to get 3G sucks. The fact there is no contract, stomachable.
i'm in need of a new laptop/netbook/etc and plan on buying one in the next week or so. i'm not sold on this to replace my dying laptop.
they will.
you'll buy one eventually.
no! and no flash!
Its a cool little device, nothing super earth shattering as far as what people hoped. Has somes ifs about it, but it does and will have its place in the market.
But since its not the GOD device, and it bares apples name more than some of find something to cry, piss, or moan about it.
If this was HP or someone announcing this device there would be hardly any whining.
Its like any time the name apple is mentioned half of you needs a tampon, a box of tissues, and a chocolate bar.

What purpose does this serve? The person who really wants this device, who doesn't have money to burn, must be in need of a laptop, travels a lot, and needs to travel light (although not that light if they are bringing the dock and keyboard). I think Apple severely overestimated the tablet niche. Not that many people are actually going to need what this thing can do, in the same way they need a iphone/smartphone.

It ALWAYS does this during keynotes as people sell shares. It'll shoot up over the next week.
I'd love to rock a MBP - but there's no way in hell I can spend that much on a computer.
I'm really trying to figure out what type of market this device covers? ok, leave out the "it's cool cause it's apple" people and the "I need new devices!!" people.

How many drs offices have laptops in every exam room now? And how many med based apps have come out over the iphone?
College textbooks.

You'll see many an iPhone and MBP (both) owner grab it because it's a 'tweener. It's not full function, but it's fairly impressive for a big iPhone.
If I had $500 to burn (now that I think about it, I don't - backyard renovation), I'd buy one as a toy.
You forgot a key demographic - those who want it because it's a neat toy.

That's what happens with just about every item they introduce, but they made 2 billion profit last year.
You know I've been a shareholder, so I watch this stuff. A lot of tablet hype was already baked into the price based on speculation alone. We'll see if the reality lives up to it. My guess is that it will get a lukewarm response from the technology press, which will also put pressure on the share price.
I've only EVER replaced my laptop because I wanted to, not because I HAD too.
Sold my first Ti powerbook to a friend after 5 years of owning, it lasted another 3.
Gave my 2nd Al powerbook to my mother in law after having it for 6 years, she uses it and loves it.
Now on my current 12" MBP til whenever I decide to dump it.
They just last and work.
Or you could buy the non 3G model and get the Verizon MiFi 3G wifi hotspot card. It's kinda pricey ($70 a month for unlimited) but you can tether like 3 other computers to it and use it for home internet, or put it in your pocket when going somewhere. It's the size of a credit card.
You know what they could have done with this that would have created a market? Give it the ability to display RAW file formats like OS X, the ability to access USB mass storage, and a basic cataloging app of some sort. 2/3 of the photographers on the planet would have been clamoring for one.
The potential is there. I think they have been aiming it towards them.
But its also for people who like be chill and dont want to flip open a laptop every time they want to check their email or read news. Its a "around the house" device with some wow factor.

This is going to flop just like the Newton. Far too many compromises.
Its too big for a cellphone/pocket organizer and too small to accomplish any sort of real work.
Too expensive as an eReader, its not good for games nor can it multitask like a laptop.
Its a toy.

If I could use Photoshop on it, I'd buy it.
"You're all a bunch of fucking morons who will buy a device that doesn't contain any of the new technology we've developed (but have). We're gonna save that and release it in about a year and get the rest of you idiots."

Again, that's already included in the share price. Apple just reported great quarter results on Monday, beating estimates across the board. The stock price remained flat (actually down a bit) because it already was priced in.
I still don't have an iphone, a five year old Razr
I didn't even notice that was included. I'm jut now getting back to my office after being in "emergency" meetings all morning getting needlessly hammered by upper management. I love my job. I love my job. I love my job.

To be able to use this on location...
Take away the apple coolness factor, which it has plenty of, and this thing has an extremely awkward place in the market.
So that's where I think it won't work, why buy this if you have a laptop in the house already? The specs on this thing can't match a laptop. This is an app launcher, just like the iphone is. On a personal level, I'm having a really hard time imagining a lot of people that are going to go get this device because it fits their needs more than anything else.

Its for people with desktops (like me) who want something a little more portable, but not as bulky, though I do currently have a laptop.
Its also the the software and apps that will make or break this device. Apps like apples NYT app....now you can read a newspaper how YOU want, customize it to your desires.
Its on the developers shoulders to make the thing really shine.

When are the MBP updates coming!!!
