Apple: iPad News and Discussion Thread

While I love my new Iphone (used to be a blackberry user) I don't really see the point of the Ipad if its running on the same OS as the Iphone.
I mean if they were going to go big, they should've implemented multi-tasking, built in web cam, a good graphics engine to run PC games, maybe an HDMI input/output... OH WAIT... then it'd just be a laptop.

Nope. Not at all. At least the iPhone has a phone.
Nope. Not that either. No SMS.
And that's worth 400.00 more? If you can't tell the difference...... ??
On top of that, if you buy the cheaper netbook you at least get a computer! Not just some app launcher.
This thing had so much potential. And to be fair, I'm trying real hard to like this thing but so far no luck.
On the other hand, this gives Dell and all the other players an advantage. Just put what this thing is missing into their own and be done.

Additionally, Apple will be selling a "camera connection kit" to allow you to plug your camera in over USB or use an SD card to import pictures.
I don't see the point of this for presentation because:
People would be working on a full size computer, then copying it onto a usb flash drive. If it has a USB drive and ran like that, then everybody would want it for presentation. No wonder the press was a bit underwhelm at the event.
I was hoping, like a netbook, it was a do all machine. If you created a presentation in Keynote, you will need another computer to present it. You can't present it in with the iPad. You would need a video out/HDMI out to connect to a projector. Doing that is like trying to sell your website on an iphone. Who does a conference meeting in a 10 inch screen?
I already have an ipod touch, and I don't need a bigger toy to play with. It's funny, because I find a netbook even more attractive now that they release the iPad.

This is from Forbes from 15 minutes ago, hot off the presses. Turns out I was wrong.
Looks like AT&T is keeping keeping the iPhone (for now)

That's why I was so curious as to this confirmation and announcement you spoke of.
I know a few gadget people personally who tend to be right 95% of the time. They're insiders who get to test out products, including cell phones so they're in a position to make educated guesses. They all said its just a matter of time before Apple releases a CDMA version of the iPhone.
btw in case you missed this yesterday....

AT&T Will Improve Network for IPhone, Apple Says
January 26, 2010, 04:13 PM EST
By Amy Thomson and Connie Guglielmo
Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- AT&T Inc., the exclusive U.S. wireless carrier for the iPhone, plans to improve the performance of its network to reverse declining customer satisfaction with the service, an Apple Inc. executive said.
The carrier has shown Apple its plans for the wireless network, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said yesterday on the Cupertino, California-based company’s earnings call.
“We have personally reviewed these plans, and we have very high confidence that they will make significant progress toward fixing them,” Cook said in a conference call.
He didn’t directly answer an analyst’s question about whether Apple intended to stick with a single partner or expand to other U.S. wireless carriers. Analysts say Apple may offer the phone this year through additional U.S. mobile-phone carriers, including market leader Verizon Wireless.
AT&T has an exclusive, multiyear agreement to offer U.S. service for the iPhone, which went on sale in June 2007. Neither Apple nor AT&T has disclosed the terms of that contract.
AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel declined to comment on Cook’s remarks.
Apple rose $2.87 to $205.94 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Dallas-based AT&T dropped 25 cents to $25.33 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.

Or they can do nothing and they will still sell a gagillion iphones in a week.
Thing is, and I can vouch for this, the iphone itself was part of the problem. The phone was horrible at handling voice and data. Other AT&T phone are not nearly as bad on the AT&T network as the iPhone is. So this being the case, the iphone would have to be fixed as well, and Verizon will NOT let a phone that doesn't work perfectly on it's network be sold on it's network. So there might be some work that needs to be done on both ends.
Or they can do nothing and they will still sell a gagillion iphones in a week.

Its the sheer amount of data being transferred.
Every 12 year old with an iPhone is glued to the damn thing watching Youtube.
Whereas other phones are dealing with text messages and pictures. Even web browsing is light duty in comparison.
Yes that's the issue I've heard. But how is this an issue with the phone itself? Isn't this merely a byproduct of the greater data usage and load on the network?
I blame AT&T for offering something they didn't prepare for.
In some locales, the iPhone works as designed. In NYC, I hear its a complete mess during peak hours. Dropped calls left and right etc.
