Huh
My b I thought it was a how to have them replace the keyboard, even if you weren't aware of any issues, before you sell it. Though that might be worth the effort.

What elements of the Mac Mini are user upgradable? In other words, Can I buy the smallest SSD or RAM and upgrade them myself or are they soldered on?

SSD is soldered.

RAM is upgradable. You can get the base line 8GB with the maxed out i7 CPU

RAM is super easy to upgrade. A little more of a hassle than the 2010/2012 but not difficult unless you’re whiskers.

Thanks.
  • 3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz)
  • 8GB 2666MHz DDR4
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • 1TB SSD storage
  • 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Nbase-T Ethernet with support for 1Gb, 2.5Gb, 5Gb, and 10Gb Ethernet using RJ‑45 connector)
Came out to $1799, saved $600 by going with 8GB RAM instead of 32. 32GB should cost around $140 and take about 30 minutes for the swap. Yes please....

Does anyone use a Time Machine alternative they like? I haven't used Time Machine in a while and my Eero system doesn't support it easily

Upgrade was super easy for anyone who has worked inside a computer before and is a little careful. My "old man eyes" were the only difficulty I encountered.

Well, that, and the fact that I failed to properly seat the second DIMM, so I had to do the procedure twice.

System board out:

Apple DIMMs out, Crucial in. See that tiny gap a the base of the right hand DIMM? Yeah...

System memory installed:

The process took 15 minutes the first time and ten the second time.

After having done that process, I can see NO reason (for a technically minded person with some PC tools) to pay Apple $600 for the RAM that cost me $130. If Apple were charging $250, maybe, but $600 is just "Apple Robbery."

I have had a MBP for some time now, although I usually use W10 via bootcamp on it.

I needed this machine for analyzing Apple computers I need to review. The forensic software I use wanted an i7 and 16+ GB of RAM, so the MBP with it's i5 and 8GB was not going to work...

Don't think I am ever going to get an iPhone, though...

Also, just an FYI to anyone contemplating the RAM upgrade on the Mini, I found that for the first 6 screws that need to be removed (on the antennae plate), my T7 bit was a better match than the T6 indicated in the video Warren posted. I also used the T7 bit for the actual antennae screw, but used a T6 for all further screws inside the case. It may be a matter of manufacturing tolerances in my driver bit set, but I thought I would mention it to prevent anyone from stripping a screw.

Speaking with journalists after winning his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi had other things on his mind. When asked what he thought writers should be demanding in the next round of discussions with producers, Waititi put Apple’s controversial laptop keyboards on blast.

“Apple needs to fix those keyboards,” he said. “They are impossible to write on — they’ve gotten worse. It makes me want to go back to PCs. Because PC keyboards, the bounce-back for your fingers is way better. Hands up who still uses a PC? You know what I’m talking about. It’s a way better keyboard. Those Apple keyboards are horrendous.”
Taika Waititi jokes about what writers should be asking for in the next round of talks with producers: “Apple needs to fix those keyboards. They are impossible to write on. They’ve gotten worse. It makes me want to go back to PCs” #Oscars pic.twitter.com/vlFTSjCfZm
— Variety (@Variety) February 10, 2020“I’ve got some shoulder problems,” Waititi continued. “I’ve got OOS [Occupational Overuse Syndrome, a term used in New Zealand for RSI] — I don’t know what you call it over here, this sort of thing here (gestures to arm), that tendon which goes down your forearm down into the thumb? You know what I’m talking about, if you guys are ever writing. And what happens is you open the laptop and you're like this (makes uncomfortable hunched-over-laptop pose) — we’ve just got to fix those keyboards. The WGA needs to step in and actually do something.”

It’s unclear whether Waititi has used Apple’s new 16-inch MacBook Pro, which replaces the unreliable and shallow “butterfly” keyboard with a new design that, by all accounts, is more comfortable to type on. But the butterfly keyboards have been shipping in laptops for nearly five years now, so hopefully Apple gets the message and kills them off once and for all in 2020.

The lack of travel on the butterfly keyboards is awful.

I use a Touch Bar 15” MBP for work, it is hooked up to a mechanical keyboard as often as possible.

how often do they update the work computers? Wouldn’t they want their employees to use the latest?

maybe as a way of testing and finding faults? 🤷🏻‍♂️

The 16” mbp went back to the traditional keyboard mechanisms.

I don’t love the butterfly keyboards. But they are the worst.

Depends which team you’re on.

Can’t elaborate on how they test, other than it’s very thorough.

YMMV.

if you miss the classic Mac startup chime on newer macs, people figured out how to turn it back on.

this seems to have a higher success rate than whatever else people have attempted before.

If you yearn for that classic Mac sound, follow these steps to re-instate it.
  1. Launch the Terminal app, which can be found in the Applications/Utilities folder. This will open a Terminal window and a command prompt for you to begin typing.
  2. Input the following command and then press Return: sudo nvram StartupMute=%00
  3. Enter your admin user password when prompted.
  4. Close Terminal, then restart your Mac.
