Well shit...
I was all set to place an order for a spec bumped iMac, but since that didn't happen I don't know what to order now. I'm sure the current 5K would handle whatever I would throw at it, but buying 2017 specs will eat at me. Some people say there's a possibility of a spec bump in the coming weeks since MacBook Pros are going to get new graphics options soon. Might wait for Black Friday and see if Micro Center discounts the iMac Pro, but even dropped down to $4000 is just a lot for something where I simply don't need 8 cores, 32GB RAM, or 1TB of SSD.

Dang. $1499 if I want it spec'd to my liking
3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz) : +$300
16GB 2666MHz DDR4 : +$200 (minimum)
32GB 2666MHz DDR4 : +$400 (ideal)
256GB SSD storage : +$200

buy your own ram. It's user upgradable.
32GB DDR4 2666 MHz SOODIMM ram is $280
this 8th gen i3 isn't the same as before.
this one is quad core where previously the i3 was just dual core.

Also it's got a super fast (nvme?) SSD. I recall they mentioned up to 3.4GB/sec.

I'm familiar with the i3 8100. Built a friend an inexpensive PC with one earlier this year when Fry's was selling them for around $85. Apple probably gets them in bulk for like $50 or less.
What current processor isn't better than the old dual cores the old Mac mini's used? I know i3 8100 is a solid processor. I'm just saying $799 for it is a lot.

I’ll pay the Apple Tax, I’m still useing a six year old MBP as my main computer. No hiccups or issues with it with ANY OS upgrade. When I was using Windows every upgrade would cause problems with my computer. And would have to upgrade parts or buy a brand new one. And now with Windows FORCED upgrades, fuck them!
and the Air is the best mac they've made in years, still sucks it's only Type C, the lack of mag safe and the thought of all the dongles are what's killing it for me. my rMBP is still doing great though it's battery life isn't what it used to be
My initial thought was to get the 2018 15 inch Pro, sell my 2017 13 inch pro and get the Air as well for a travel laptop. Then Im like, why would I want the Air over my 13 inch pro, so Ill keep it
And a number of reviewers LOVED the removal of the magsafe. Ridiculous. Who doesn't want kids and animals dragging $2000 macbooks off a table?
As awesome as Magsafe was. They went ahead of curve for once in adopting USB C as the only source of charging. All laptops are going to go that route eventually, even PCs. The Lenovo X1 carbons and Dell XPS's are already there with USB C charging.
Embrace the future Kurt!!! Having one USB C cable. To connect your display, charge, and being able to Daisy chain hard drives is a real winner!!

I think most of these particular 'reviewers' don't have kids and don't have pets (and don't get laid)
I'm not even sure I'd want the new Air over the base MPB. Curiously waiting for the CPU and GPU benchmark comparisons.

The Air also has more microphones like the MBP's with the touch bar.
The MBP does have a 60w charger and the Air only has 30w
Also the 8th gen Intel processor has hardware mitigation for spectre and meltdown so they don't need a software patch that reduced performance in the 7th gen and older Intel processors. So that could narrow the performance gap as well.
