Apple: Hardware News and Discussion Thread
Interesting that those new iPhones about to be announced still won't have any version of 5G, even though 5G will be well under deployment by at least two carriers by the time of the Fall 2019 announcements.
At least there's a good chance of Band 71 and faster LTE this time. :-)

When I watch 4K content that I've recorded or even off YouTube my 2012 Mac Mini's fans spin up really loud.
I've read that even a 2014 with Intel Iris graphics will do the same.
Whiskers would have just gone impotent.
Out of the blue my wife won a 12.9" 512gb iPad Pro and pencil. And as tempted as I was to rip it open to compare it to my 10.5" model she wanted to sell it. So, I just got back from doing just that. The cash is nice, but I have to admit it hurt a wee bit.

right
I was just thinking with Whiskers it would been like handing him a puppy and then telling him to get rid of it.
Dealing with craigslist though. So many fucking scammers...and its so painfully obvious. I just fuck with them.

Well, if they ask for your number that usually sign number one...so I say give me yours. Anytime I get a number I run it through the Hiya app to see who owns it. But its alway obvious. My ad specifically stated in the title and ad "Factory Sealed, Brand new" And the first question you get is "does it have any scratches or dents. Is it in good condition"....scam. So, I just fuck with them. Or the best ones "Im interesting in your product"....really now? Scammer just carpet bombing craigslist til they find someone.

I played with the True Tone yesterday in the store. It was fine, but not really a reason to get it. The keyboard issue doesnt bother me too much since I have two laptops and Apple care, plus Apple extended it to 4 years. The speed would be the reason, but to be honest, I dont need it. My 13 inch Pro is maxed out so its plenty fast.
Time to (keep) checking MacRumors for new iMac info. I had been planning to get one all year, but now that the GPU in my old MacBook Pro acting as my desktop decided to die I'll be jumping on the order button as soon as a refresh gets released. Sucks since the logic board was replaced once two years ago but that repair program ended in 2016. Really nice of it since I just formatted the SSD and reinstalled macOS last week
. Now it's a mess of kernel panics and lines/colors as soon as I plug in my external monitor. Using my 13-inch on the stand by itself until Amazon delivers a DisplayPort cable tomorrow so I at least get the monitor back, but my NAS is giving me permissions problems for all the folders I already backed up.

I'm looking at sales numbers, and that companies that use to make computers and laptops, no longer do. It's down to about five Major brands. And if people are doing what you're doing, means just as many are dumping desktops and laptops for pads and tablets.

PC sales are growing for the first time in six years
Jul 13, 2018
Shipments of PCs are definitely growing, for the first time in six years. Market research firms Gartner and IDC both agree that the PC market grew in the second quarter of 2018, with IDC claiming an increase of 2.7 percent and Gartner recording a more modest 1.4 percent of growth. IDC first revealed the PC market was starting to flatten and show potential growth last year, but both Gartner and IDC track PC shipments differently.
IDC’s data crucially includes Chromebooks and excludes Windows tablets including devices with a detachable keyboard like the Surface Pro. Gartner counts Windows-based tablets as PCs and excludes Chromebooks or any non-Windows-based tablets. Chromebooks appeared to be powering some PC growth last year, but now that Gartner is tracking overall growth it’s clear this is also from regular Windows PCs or Macs, and not just from Android tablets or Chromebooks. This is the first year-over-year PC shipment growth since the first quarter of 2012.
Windows 10 business PCs appear to be powering some of the growth. “PC shipment growth in the second quarter of 2018 was driven by demand in the business market, which was offset by declining shipments in the consumer segment,” says Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. “In the business segment, PC momentum will weaken in two years when the replacement peak for Windows 10 passes.”
IDC agrees that a business-driven refresh cycle is helping. “Although traditional PCs may not be the default device for many usage scenarios, the market continues to show pockets of resiliency as PC usage experience evolves and improves,” says Jay Chou, research manager at IDC. “Even certain types of desktops are seeing growth amid this business-driven refresh cycle.”
HP, Lenovo, Dell, Apple, and Acer all grew their PC businesses in the recent quarter, with competitors continuing to weaken. It’s clear that the top five manufacturers will continue to dominate the market as PC sales appear to be stabilizing after years of declines.

I use my iPad pro 10.5 all the time. Its more or less replaced my laptop as a main/everyday machine. I also do all my photography exclusively on it as well.
They can't replace a computer 100% just yet...but they are at about 90-95%.

A tablet is close to being able to replace the laptop but lack of a trackpad or mouse kills it for me at least on an iPad. I do a lot of remote support and you need a mouse to work in the remote session. I actually sold my 10.5 pro and bought a Surface Go. I don't really consider it a tablet because it runs a full OS but it works for me and I do like it.
