It's weird to be a Mets or Yankees fan I guess. What is the ultimate goal? To win the World Series, right? To get into the playoffs year-in, year-out. That's it. So what does "building for the future" have anything to do with it? For a team that has spent so much money bringing in the "PIECES" for a championship run in 2006, I find it slightly hypocritical to suddenly get cold feet in trading prospects for proven players.
I don't think the Mets are geared for the future because most of their important players have visible expiration dates (aging Pedro/Glavine, Wagner's best years are behind him, Delgado is in that iffy stage of his career, Floyd already looks done, Lo Duca is 34) and the front office mindset has ALWAYS been to bring in high-priced free agents. So I find that statement more of an "excuse" for inaction than anything else. Hey, the small market teams "build for the future" because they cannot commit the capital to bring in the talent ... they have NO choice but to develop youngsters and toil in mediocrity. But the likes of the Mets/Yanks/Red Sox/Dodgers? They pay premium for premium players.
But I understand the fan's mentality ... the premise of "building for the future" has a nice ring to it because it seems like the right thing to do. But it has rarely ever been the Mets' modus operandi. For the most part, over the past 20-plus years, it's been about bringing in the veterans for $$$ and integrating some home-growns into the mix.

Building for the future is what clubs like the Braves do... When you get to the playoffs as often as they have, that has to count for something...
The Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena was a bad deal for the 2006 season, but a good deal for the future...
You've got to balance both the now and later stuff...
The yanks have a depleted farm system, and even with a 180M payroll still are stumbling around... The NOW isn't working, and the FUTURE doesn't look to bright either...
Balance and moderation...

LoDuca, Wagner and Pedro have at least 2 more years in them. FLoyd is gone after this year anyway. Thats why they need Milledge. Don't be surprised by a rotation of Pedro, Mulder or Zito, Pelfrey, and El Duque next season.

i'd say the brewers (they are 26-26), along with maybe arizona (30-21)....and of course Detroit (35-17) are all doing good with young (building for the future) teams

Being a Twins fan, it used to be nice to hear that they have the "model organization", they teach the fundamentals, do the right thing, etc. Now it's a euphemism for "you got no chance to ever land a free agent better than Rondell White". As a result the Twins are CONSTANTLY building for the future. Until 2010 when we get a new ballpark and can maybe lure North Dakota boy Travis Hafner.

...
how does the Tribune continue selling its papers with such dumbass management?
im not going to let this year bother me. im looking forward to the World Cup and Bears season. When the White Sox win it again, I'll tip my cap and congradulate their organization on being a sound fundamental unit.

Was at the Met game last night...Pedro vs Webb. Holy shit what an amazing game. Stayed all 13 innings. Games only lasted a little over 3 hours because the pitching was so dominant. The Metties are looking good this year...

Another filthy guy last night on the West Coast went to 4-0 with a 2.11 ERA. 6 innings gave up 1 hit that should have been ruled an out. Nasty left-hand slider....

But, that being said, the Yanks sweeping the Tigers is no biggie. They have been stomping on bad teams so far...26-ranked schedule. The team is probably this year's version of the Orioles from last year.

Fucking Silva. Guy walked 4 all last year and he doesn't do shit this year. I drafted him in both my leagues.
I heard Dougie was in some shit. I was watching Sportscenter but missed that part. What happened?

It's gonna be a long summer...
Lot of stuff has been happening on the Red Sox roster, but as long as we keep on winning, I'm keeping my mouth shut

I blame the Cubs' inept coaching staff for this...And just how long before Prior goes down again? I think I'll set the over/under at 2 games.
