I guess he'll be used to replace Nixon in left (if either of them are healthy)

Some "Queer Eye" news... I think Wells is turning queer for Tek

''Who had the biggest role in you staying?" The question was posed yesterday evening by Josh Beckett, who parted the media sea washing over Wells to pop the question. When he ultimately answered, Wells cited the captain, Jason Varitek. ''Just the way 'Tek looked at me," Wells said. ''He said, 'We need to talk.' We never really got a chance to talk. Knowing 'Tek, I kind of had an idea what was going through his mind. As he walked away the other day [to go to the World Baseball Classic] he asked me, 'Do you want to stay?' ''He just gave me that look. It was something, like, wow. There was something behind that look. That vibe I got was deep, without even talking to him. Something heavy."

Sounds good to me:
2004 Season
There was no more positive development last year for Cincinnati than the emergence of Wily Mo Pena. Long considered an exceptional talent, Pena finally got a chance to play every day and he took advantage of the opportunity. He was second on the Reds in home runs and fourth in RBI, all produced in barely more than 300 at-bats (of which a third amazingly resulted in strikeouts). He also impressed the Reds by recovering from a slump following his hot first six weeks as a starter and rebounded to have a strong September.
Hitting
Pena doesn't have to take a backseat to anyone's power. He can turn around fastballs with tape-measure results and is able to reach inside pitches more frequently after slightly backing off the plate. Pena, however, remains a raw product still bedeviled by breaking balls and does not wait on offspeed pitches. He can go through long stretches in which he struggles to make contact and he has little feel for working counts, though his patience improved as his exposure to major league pitching increased. He has also shown the ability to kill lefthanded pitching.
Baserunning & Defense
Despite his good size, Pena has above-average speed and should be able to steal in double figures as he gains more experience. He has excellent range and a cannon for a throwing arm, and the Reds think his tools could allow him to play center field, though his experience largely has been in the corner outfield positions.
2005 Outlook
Among Pena's many attributes is a strong work ethic that has impressed the Reds' coaches. He improved significantly in all areas last year, and Pena likely will come to spring training with the Reds' center-field job. His breakthrough season was not a fluke, and if he continues just normal development, he has the ability to be another 40-homer giant in the middle of the Cincinnati lineup.

I like Arroyo... He's cheap (3 years for a total of 12), had 14 wins, and can pitch out of the bullpen...
He had a "gentlemans" agreement that he wouldn't be traded. You think that anyone is going to give a "hometown discount" to the sox w/o a no trade clause ?? You think free agents are going to want to sign w/ the sox without knowing if they can be trusted to keep their word ??
And it also probably means we're stuck with Wells for awhile...
But Theo must see some upside to this guy, as he's giving away a great pitcher for another outfielder...
We've got Stern (yawn), and now Juan Gonsalves (yawn), and Dustin Mohr (who?) to back up Nixon already (till Dave Murphy is ready to come up from the minors...
Hopefully Pena will blossom as a member of the sox (like Ortiz did), but it looks like the 2004 WS championship team are slowly but surely disappearing...

Wily Mo is a beast. He doesn't have much of plate discipline but if he's positioned well in the line-up and sees good pitches, he could easily be a 35-100-.280 guy in Boston. He'll strike out every three at-bats but he's got tremendous potential. He never really played consistently with the Red's packed OF but still hit 51 bombs in 830 career at-bats ... and the dude's only 24!

I think the thought behind the move is that we've already seen Arroyo's best work - it's going to be downhill from here on out. He was cheap, but it looks like they may have got some value in return for him. Time will tell on both sides...
Arroyo always struck me as one of those pitchers that opposing teams can "figure out," much like teams figured out D-Lowe, kicking off the "D-bLowe" era. Arroyo seemed like a good guy with a bad haircut - and he was part of "The Team" - he will be missed.

WBC Thoughts
What are your thoughts about the inaugural tournament? The only thing I would change is make the semi finals and finals a 3 game series. I really enjoyed it and was suprised by the amount of good players out there. The Korean team was amazing, and the scrappy Japanese. I expected a lot more from my Dominican team and the Puerto Rican team though.
