Preds (not the Blue Jackets, Statler) match the offer sheet on Weber

The Nashville Predators announced Tuesday that they have matched the Philadelphia Flyers' 14-year, $110 million offer sheet for defenceman Shea Weber.

The Flyers signed Weber to the offer sheet - which includes $68 million in bonus money in the first six years - last week. In total, Weber will make $14 million in each of the first four years; $12 million in years five and six; $6 million in each of the next four seasons; $3 million in year 11; and $1 million in each of the remaining years.

"The decision to enter into the largest contract in franchise history was made by all parts of the organization, including ownership, hockey operations and business operations," read a team statement issued on Tuesday afternoon.

"As the organization analyzed the overall situation and worked toward a conclusion, the decision boiled down to three questions: Was Shea Weber the individual that this franchise wanted to lead our team, a team that would compete for the Stanley Cup every year, for the next 14 years? Would matching the offer sheet be in the best long-term interest of the team and organization? Would a decision not to match the offer sheet send a negative message to current Predators players and other NHL organizations, a message that the Predators would only go so far to protect its best players and be pushed around by teams with 'deep pockets?' The answer to each of the above questions is clearly yes."

The 26-year-old remained a restricted free agent after failing to come to an agreement with the Predators when his one-year, $7.5 million contract - awarded through arbitration - expired after the season.

The native of Sicamous, BC is coming off back-to-back first team NHL All-Star selections. He finished the 2011-12 season with 19 goals and 49 points. The captain of the Predators has spent seven seasons in Nashville, recording 99 goals and 263 points in 480 career NHL games.

The Predators, who had 104 points last season and finished fourth in the Western Conference, already lost free agent defenceman Ryan Suter to the Minnesota Wild this month.

Speculation was that Weber would have filled the void left by defenceman Chris Pronger, who has been battling concussion problems and could retire. The Flyers also lost defenceman Matt Carle via free agency. He signed a six-year, $33 million deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Maybe dom is right.....with contracts like Weber's, the league is doomed under the current CBA.

The owners can't help themselves. And they go into the negotiations with these contracts flying around...talk about no credibility.

I'm happy to see the Preds keep Weber. Then again, how could they not given how they have lost 3 key players on D if they let the guy go to the Flyers (Hamhuis and Suter).

But, talk about big-market team preying on the small-market team.

Weber's contract makes Brad Dotey's contract look like child's-play.

So what if the fans were to band together and state they will not be waiting if the sides don't agree to terms and have a lockout?

Frankly I am sick of millionaires whining about money.

Without butts in the seats they have nothing.

I have no sympathy for either side. They need to compromise and not impact the season.

So, your Kings replace a bad PP coach with another bad PP coach?

Oopsh.

Blah...I dunno, I don't know if you can blame a poor PP all on a coach. Still, I think Payne is a solid hire. I would've liked him as a Hawks assistant over what you're telling me in Coupon...

^^ That's my point, I know Kompon was in charge of the PP, however as head coach, Payne was not or should not have been in charge of the PP..........................HOPEFULLY

Either way our PP can't get any worse than it was under Kompon....can it?

Riddle me this: With the talent your team ices (as does mine)...why do their PPs suck worse than watching the NHL try to justify discipline for illegal hits/checks?

Beats the out of me

It's an enigma.

All I know is that when they need goals in the Stanley Cup Finals, they scored 3 of them on a 5 minute major

Watched the Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup Champions Blu ray last night.

Awesome, and well done!!

I felt the highs and lows of The Cup run all over again, got shivers chills, and a bit teary eyed again when they hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup.

I think I will be watching this many times over many years.

You think? You will.

I've watched the Hawks Blu-Ray disc at least 15+ times already. And each time, it's still awesome.

Wasn't going to get it here, that's his fourth one-year contract in a row. If he shows up to play, he'll be worth it. But I see him getting a few more goals this year, as well as a lot more penalty minutes.

If Thomas is retiring/taking a year off why is he still getting ink?

Tim Thomas backs Chick-fil-A
Updated: July 26, 2012, 9:23 PM ET
ESPNBoston.com

A Facebook post Thursday from goalie Tim Thomas, who created waves when he skipped the White House ceremony honoring the Boston Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup championship, read, "I stand with Chick-fil-A."

No stranger to political controversy, Thomas offered his support of Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy, who has come under fire for his recent comments in opposition to same-sex marriage.

Cathy told the Biblical Recorder (Raleigh, N.C.) newspaper earlier this month that Chick-fil-A was "guilty as charged" for its support of "the biblical definition of a family. " He reiterated that stance in a subsequent radio interview.

Politicians and gay-rights advocates have lined up to denounce Cathy and Chick-fil-A for their anti-gay rhetoric.

On Wednesday, Boston mayor Tom Menino added his voice to the chorus.

"There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it," Menino wrote in a letter stating he would oppose a Chick-fil-A attempt to open a restaurant in Boston.

Thomas has used his Facebook page in the past to illustrate his political views and also to announce that he will take the 2012-13 NHL season off.

Hey Fibs...what's your team's grand plan with the black hole on D...? You know as well as I do that without a nice D, your team will do a nice faceplant (as will Howard) just like Chicago did. Especially your team...since it's built and structured the same way.

Here's the grand plan: Fire coach midway thru season, trade a d-man for a semi-flashy forward who likes to dye his hair different colors, play mediocre hockey for 80% of the season, then slide into the playoffs as the 8th seed and hope to catch fire. Yeah, thats the new magic recipe in teh Count's league.

The only thing missing as you pointed out is that the above only works with a rock solid goalie. Howard is better than avg, but certainly not a superstar. As for the hole on D. Boy, that Philly offer was damn near brilliant, but Holland is too nice to pull a sneaky move like that. Now Nashtucky isn't going to have much flexibility to improve their team in the near future. Weber is worth every Suter/Parise/Doan - not so much.

But I digress. Even if Holland doesn't sign or make a trade, I think our D will be okay. As I said before, this is Brendan Smith's time to shine and it wouldn't shock me to see him discussed (if there is a season) for the Calder. Wings desperately need a big, physical, stay at home shutdown guy - we don't have one.
