^^ good question.

I'd like an answer to that, and to "what's basketball".

Lotsa tall black dudes bouncing an orange ball around and then slapping their own chest like King Kong if they are able to run to the round hole mounted on a wooden white board and shove the ball in.

32k supporters signed the petition. Barely enough fans to fill two arenas.

When will the fans learn.

The truth hurts, but NOBODY cares if the NHL goes away for a season.

Hockey is strictly a die hard "small" fan base.
Hockey fans are extremely dedicated, passionate fans, but they are a small group by comparison to the other big 3 sports. (Especially in terms of the USA)

It never has and probably never will have a broad mass-appeal fan base like baseball, basketball, & football.

Hockey is my absolute favorite sport, but even I as a fan know a lost cause when I see one. Fans have no say, and they don't matter in these discussions.

...but like crack addicts the vast majority of fans will come back time and again to get their fix when the game returns. Why? Because NHL fans for the most part are die hards.

I agree. I am jonesing just from the off season. Forget that it is late coming back.

My real concern is that they are not really talking.

I thought that was the rule.

Every time there is a lockout, by default, the Leafs win The Cup for the lockout year.

It's the least the league can do for Toronto.

From Poo:
NHL Offers 50/50 Full 82 Game Season Starting Nov 2
What we know so far is the NHL has offered a 50/50 deal to the NHLPA with a full season starting November 2nd, and that means the revenues will stay the same for the year. THAT is HUGE.

The fact the NHL is willing to keep the current definition of Hockey Related Revenues is also HUGE.

The NHLPA will not just accept this offer, but hopefully will counter quickly and we will see the movement that makes this week so promising..

The Salary reduction will be via escrow, BUT the NHL also has some creative ways in this deal to protect the players

Fehr has just announced "It's not a short offer and we need time to read it and understand it..Then get back to the NHL today or Tomorrow."

PA Source, "Now it begins. We have a negotiation."

ESPN too
The NHL has offered a new labor deal to its locked-out players, proposing a 50-50 split in hockey-related revenue and a full 82-game season starting Nov. 2.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the offer Tuesday in Toronto, where the league and the players' union discussed core economic issues rather than continuing to focus on secondary issues.

"We hope we've given our best shot," Bettman told reporters.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said that the offer includes a deal that is "at least six years in length" and acknowledged that the union will respond to the proposal "sooner rather than later."

The NHLPA has scheduled a conference call for 5 p.m. ET to discuss the offer with the players' negotiating committee and the union's executive board. But a source told ESPNNewYork.com that it is "doubtful" that the union will formally respond Tuesday.

The offer includes a proposal designed to "protect" players from salary reductions in the initial years, a league source told ESPN.com. The league also has removed earlier proposals for systemic changes to player contracts, according to the source.

A source with knowledge of the offer told ESPNNewYork.com that the players' primary concern -- that their current contracts are honored -- is addressed in the proposal. To protect the contracts already in the books, there is a mechanism in place in the league's latest offer to defer payments based on future growth, according to the source.

The NHL's owners have remained adamant that players accept a significant drop from the 57 percent of revenue they received under the salary cap in the last contract. The players don't want what they consider more massive cuts at a time when the overall revenue pot reached record numbers ($3.3 billion) last year.

The NHL locked out its players on Sept. 15, and the regular season was scheduled to begin on Oct. 11. A Nov. 2 start date would extend the season well into June, but would preserve some of the marquee events, such as the Jan. 1 Winter Classic in Michigan.

This is the third lockout under Bettman's watch, but unlike the previous two, dialogue has remained steady. The two sides last met last week in New York.

The lockout, which already has wiped out the entire preseason, turned a month old Monday, the same day NHL players would have received their first league paychecks of the season -- had there been hockey.

hmmm....now for the details of this offer:

I'm not nearly as optimistic as I was when I first heard.

Free Agency would be at 28 and 8 years of service.

Entry Level Contracts would be 4 years in Length.

Revenue sharing would be at or near 200 million dollars.

This offer, to me, still does not address the big fundamental problems in the NHL.

Another stop gap measure that kicks the can down the road and we will be right back here at the end of the CBA term once again.
Piss poor franchises will continue to be the albatross around the league's neck.

We agree.

...but this deal does put a gun to the NHLPA's head.

I'm really shocked that the owner's did not address the failed state of the small market franchises.

There is no way Phoenix, Dallas, Anaheim, etc can survive on 50/50 revenue split.

And contraction/relocating is the pink elephant in the room.
