As a kid who grew up playing the game and as an adult who enjoys the sheer talent, competitiveness and admires the effort and teamwork of the pro sport, its retarded that greed is going to set the sport back (albeit probably temporarily).
I don't engage in hero worship and have never bought a jersey, not even Yzerman's, but it will be a crying fucking shame if true hockey fans miss a game seven spectacle because of avarice.
I don't feel particularly angry, just disappointed. I do feel bad for the unintended victims like the arena/support people and the restaurant and bar owners which are going to lose paychecks.

A "chop" for all you fans

That was my point. If there is no green grass (paying fans) there is no productive cattle and the ranch is useless. The ranch owners take the fields of grass for granted and as yummy cakes said, the cows are happy to chew cud with ignorance and do not care about the grass they eat.

I like hockey because it is a fun sport to watch when you have such elite athletes go at it. I was raised a Hawks fan and grew to love them as a kid...but, at the end of the day, having grown up and seeing the contract holdouts, the trades...at the end of the day, it is a BUSINESS. Period.
They depend on people like us to dish out money for their product. And while there is that correlation, give me a freaking break if I hear or read about players/owners "CARING" about the fans. They don't give a flying fark.
Never have. They win a Cup for their OWN personal glory. They enjoy the wild cheering because hey, who else doesn't enjoy the adoration of thousands?
So, while it stinks that there is no hockey...meh. I can divert my attention to other sports...which I hold the same view about as well. Fans? Who cares about the fans. If I were a player, I honestly could give a crap about the fans.
Just pay me.

Seattle City Council approves new arena deal
By GENE JOHNSON, Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) — A wealthy hedge-fund manager won approval Monday for his plan to bring professional men's basketball and hockey back to Seattle, with initially skeptical City Council members agreeing to put up $200 million for a new arena after he promised to personally guarantee the city's debt.
Council members voted 6-2 to approve Chris Hansen's plan for a $490 million arena near the Seahawks and Mariners stadiums south of downtown.
"I was a skeptic when this came forward because I was worried about our taxpayers," said Councilwoman Sally Bagshaw. "The fact that we have a personal guarantee from Mr. Hansen ... that makes a big difference.
"At the end, we're going to have something the city is proud of."
Seattle hasn't had an NBA team since 2008, when the SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder, devastating their fans here. It's been quite a bit longer since Seattle had major-league hockey: The Metropolitans, who won the Stanley Cup in 1917, disbanded in 1924.....

The Oil are moving to the land of Starbucks.
Ok, perhaps the Yotes.

Doubt it.
Still, I would be amused if the Oilers left Edmonton.

Personally, I think the Pink Things should leave Detroit and go to like, I dunno...Yellowknife.

Personally, I think the only long-term fix to this is contraction. Kill off those teams that are losing money. Admit that expanding to cities that have never seen ice in their life was a stupid idea.
But, nope. When you're rich...common sense is not required. And besides, killing of those franchises means losing a few union jobs...and well, we would not want to see that, do we?

Since there's no hockey and if you're bored, Hackel wrote a nice piece on the stupidity of the Oilers arena situation: http://nhl-red-light.si.com/2012/09/...?sct=nhl_t2_a6

The Islanders should be moved to Quebec City or Hamilton, Ontario.

A picture is worth.......
I know everyone says this, but in all seriousness, ever since I became a Kings fan back when Lucky Luc entered the league, I never thought I'd see the day when I would see the Los Angeles Kings on Lord Stanley's Cup.

They got together.......for 2 hours?!?!?!?!?!?!???!
A delay in the start of the 2012-13 NHL season became all but a certainty Tuesday as talks between the NHL and its players ended after two hours with no reported progress.
With players needing seven to nine days of training camp to start the season, the league is expected to announce this week that the Oct. 11 opening night games and probably others will be canceled. Based on how the league handled preseason cancellations, it might cancel two weeks worth of games at a time.
No plans were made to continue discussions.

Unfortunately, I don't see either side considering that as an option. Especially the Players Association, that would be losing 20% of their members.

If not, then obviously we are gonzo and I might even take a bet that Fehr plays hardball into the next season just to one up the Count.

They need this season. The NHL is officially the #5 sport in the USA. Last year MLS had higher average attendance at their games than the NHL did, missing another season isn't going to help that.
