Now killed through December 14.

Why not just pull the frigging plug already. Obviously they ain't settling this ish.

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/86...l-star-weekend

The National Hockey League announced another round of cancellations on Friday, wiping out all regular-season games through Dec. 14, as well as the All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio, originally slated for Jan. 27.

The lockout now has cost the league 422 regular-season games -- 34.3 percent of the season -- as well as all of its marquee events; the annual Winter Classic was canceled earlier this month.

"The reality of losing more regular-season games as well as the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend in Columbus is extremely disappointing," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "We feel badly for NHL fans and particularly those in Columbus, and we intend to work closely with the Blue Jackets organization to return the NHL All-Star events to Columbus and their fans as quickly as possible."

More from ESPN.com

A veteran of four NHL work stoppages, Ray Whitney told ESPN.com that the cycle has to stop. "It kills the game," Whitney told Pierre LeBrun. Blog

The New York Rangers' Brad Richards is using his time away from the ice to perform one act of charity after another, writes Katie Strang. Story

Given the lack of progress between the NHL and NHLPA, many fear the next cancellation could be that of the entire season altogether.

Friday's announcement comes two days after the latest standoff between the NHL and NHLPA. The union submitted a new proposal at the league's request on Wednesday, but that offer was rebuffed, leaving the players and owners at loggerheads once again.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the two sides remain "far apart," while NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said the league's response to what he deemed a "dramatic move" in the owner's direction was essentially "thanks, but no thanks."

In the latest proposal, the union offered to link the players' share to revenue in the league's preferred percentage-based system -- a substantial concession considering the guaranteed player amount featured in player proposals -- although there remain some serious concerns among owners about the offer.

Multiple sources told ESPNNewYork.com the owners' side objects to the amount asked for in the union's Make Whole plan to honor existing contracts -- $393 million, compared to the league's last offer of $211 million -- as well as a provision that guarantees the players share to some degree.

The provision says that, starting in Year 2, the players cannot make less in share than the previous year, thereby protecting against the potential devaluation of the Canadian dollar of a possible decline in revenue.

Bettman said Wednesday the damage incurred from the lockout has resulted in the league losing between $18 to $20 million by the day.

"To expect our best economic proposal to get better as the damage continues to increase isn't particularly realistic," Bettman said.

In a statement Friday, Fehr said the gap between the two sides on "core economic issues is $182 million," or just 10 days worth of money the NHL is currently losing by not playing games.

"It makes the NHL's announcement of further game cancellations, including the 2013 All-Star Weekend, all the more unnecessary, and disappointing for all hockey fans -- especially those in Columbus," Fehr said. "The players remain ready to negotiate but we require a willing negotiating partner."

The rejection of yet another proposal -- one that was the result of a push among the NHLPA's moderates, a source told ESPNNewYork.com -- has angered players within the union's ranks.

Some players have raised the issue of decertification as a potential option moving forward, which essentially would disband the union and allow the players to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NHL.

"After watching the other sport leagues go through labor disputes last year, it is apparent that until decertification is filed, there will not be any real movement or negotiation," Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller told The Globe and Mail.

"They want to see if we will take a bad deal because we get desperate or if we have the strength to push back. Decertification is a push back and should show we want a negotiation and a fair deal on at least some of our terms."

Team NY vs Team NJ raises $ for Sandy relief.

I especially like the part calling for Bettman to go.

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/86...s-charity-game

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Locked-out NHL players hit the ice Saturday night to raise money for Sandy victims.

New York Rangers star Henrik Lundqvist made 57 saves in the Operation Hat Trick charity game at Boardwalk Hall to help Team New York beat Team New Jersey 10-6.

"(You'd) think he'd have a little rust on him (after not) playing for five or six months," said Philadelphia Flyers left wing Scott Hartnell, who captained Team New Jersey.

Pittsburgh Penguins left wing James Neal scored four goals for Team New York.

Hartnell and Rangers center Brad Richards organized the game. Tickets ranged from $20 to $100, and the players' equipment will be autographed and auctioned off. The proceeds are earmarked for the American Red Cross, Empire State Relief Fund and the New Jersey Hurricane Relief Fund. The NHLPA also donated $20,000 to the charities.

"A lot of people were affected by Sandy. It's great to do stuff like this," Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi said. "A lot of people here lost their homes are fans. We had some people who lost everything."

The sellout crowd of 10,792 hockey-starved fans chanted "We want hockey! We want hockey!" and also called for NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's firing.

"We hear that," Girardi said. "(The New York), New Jersey and Philadelphia fans are very passionate. It's hilarious, but we don't feel that way."

A group of 25 players met with NHLPA executive director Don Fehr earlier in the day for an update on the negotiations.

"When you make a move toward them, if you're (going to) have an agreement, somebody has to say yes and now I can do this. Instead, they said more or less, 'Yes and what else can you do for me?' " Fehr said. "Everybody understands that negotiation is a process. So far, we seem to be doing all the negotiating."

Well, the death nail is lined up and the hammer is raised. Government mediators are now involved, that was the precursor the the cancellation of 04/05.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=646395

The National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association have jointly agreed to meet with federal mediators to aid the sides in negotiations toward establishing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

"We are able to confirm that we have agreed to a request by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to engage in meetings with the Union that will involve the participation of Federal Mediators," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "While we have no particular level of expectation going into this process, we welcome a new approach in trying to reach a resolution of the ongoing labor dispute at the earliest possible date.

"We have no further comment on the upcoming meetings at the current time."

Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services Director George H. Cohen said in a statement that he has assigned Deputy Director Scot L. Beckenbaugh and Director of Mediation Services John Sweeney to serve as the mediators between the NHL and NHLPA.

"I have had separate, informal discussions with the key representatives of the National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association during the course of their negotiations for a successor Collective Bargaining Agreement," Cohen said in the statement. "At the invitation of the FMCS, and with the agreement of both parties, the ongoing negotiations will now be conducted under our auspices."

NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr released the following statement:

"The NHLPA has agreed to the addition of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) to our ongoing negotiations. We look forward to their involvement as we continue working to reach an equitable agreement for both the players and the owners."

The FMCS was also used in the labor disputes in both the National Basketball Association and National Football League last year.

The mediation services provided by the FMCS are non-binding.

The NHL and NHLPA have been without a CBA since Sept. 16. Regular-season games through Dec. 14, as well as the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and All-Star Weekend have been cancelled.
On the positive side, the Leafs won't "fail" to make the playoffs this year. Does that technically end their streak?

Who's says the Leafs aren't winning?!?!?!?

LEAFS THE FIRST NHL TEAM WORTH $1B, ACCORDING TO FORBES

NEW YORK -- The Toronto Maple Leafs are the first NHL team worth US$1 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

The Leafs, who have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, are worth $250 million more than the next most valuable franchise, the New York Rangers.

"I'm intrigued by the evaluation and the recent MLSE acquisition clearly demonstrates the growing importance of all of our franchises to our fans," MLSE COO and President Tom Anselmi told TSN. "But I have no idea of how they came up with that number."

The Montreal Canadiens are worth $575 million.

The Chicago Blackhawks ($350 million), Boston Bruins ($348 million) and Detroit Red Wings ($346 million) round up the top six, meaning the league's six original franchises are also its most valuable.

The Vancouver Canucks are the next Canadian team on the list, in seventh at $342 million. The Calgary Flames are in 12th at $245 million, the Edmonton Oilers are ranked 14th at $225 million, the Ottawa Senators 16th at $220 million and the Winnipeg Jets 20th at $200 million.

The Jets saw their value jump after their first full season in Winnipeg. Forbes valued the franchise at $164 million last year and at $135 million in 2010, before the team moved north.

Least valuable of the 30 teams are the St. Louis Blues at $130 million and the Phoenix Coyotes at $134 million.

The Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings are worth $276 million, 10th overall.

Forbes says the NHL's total revenues were $3.4 billion for the 2011-12 season. Fuelled by that nine per cent increase, the average NHL team is worth $282 million, 18 per cent more than a year ago.

With the players locked out by owners, the NHL already has cancelled 422 regular-season games. Forbes reports that 13 teams lost money last season.

The Leafs, Rangers (last Stanley Cup in 1994) and Canadiens (last title in 1993) account for 83 per cent of the league's income, with Toronto the most profitable franchise at $81.9 million, followed by the Rangers at $74 million and Montreal at $51.6 million.

The continuing chronicle of Dwight Howard versus The Free Throw Line hit a new rut for the Los Angeles Lakers center on Tuesday when Howard, at the end of the team's morning shootaround, was defeated by Bailey, the Los Angeles Kings lion mascot, in a shooting contest

Repeatedly.

Upon Bailey’s invitation, according to Dave McMenamin of Sulia.com, Howard was challenged to a free throw shooting battle while the six-foot-tall lion visited the Lakers’ practice facility along with the MLS Cup in a promotional exchange. After Bailey won that contest, Howard nullified the victory by saying that it didn’t happen on the regulation court at the Toyota Sports Center, the El Segundo training facility shared by the Lakers and Kings.

Once on the main court, Bailey again beat Howard from beyond the charity stripe — and then defeated the NBA All-Star in a shooting contest from outside the three-point line.

Desperate, Hockey Fans Root for Virtual Team
Pat Hickey, who covered his first Montreal Canadiens game in 1968 for the now-defunct Montreal Star, and who has chronicled the team’s exploits over the past 22 years for the Montreal Gazette, is pleasantly surprised by the team’s start this season. Last season the Habs (the local nickname for the team) finished at the bottom of the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference. But as of Monday, Hickey notes, the Canadiens were tied for first. “I thought they were better than a last place team last year,” he says. “They have injured players back that have made a difference, but still I’m surprised that they’re up there.”

Hickey has not lost his mind. He’s well aware that the NHL is the 72nd day of a lockout that threatens to swallow the 2012-13 season. The Canadiens he’s talking about play inside an Xbox 360 (MSFT) video game consul in a lounge at the Gazette offices. (O.K., maybe Hickey has lost his mind.)

Since opening day on Oct. 11, Hickey has been covering the Canadiens season as it plays out in a simulation on the EA Sports (EA) NHL 13 video game. As with other games in the EA Sports franchise, NHL 13 includes an automatic setting that plays out games (and entire seasons) based on embedded information about players’ strengths and tendencies. The EA simulated game has become a regular epiphenomenon of the sports world. ESPN covers the simulated Super Bowl every year. (EA has correctly picked seven of the last nine winners.) Hickey is taking the idea to a fresh extreme, however, logging his regular post-game write-ups—quotes and all—as if the simulated games were real. “It wasn’t my best game but I didn’t have to be my best because the guys gave me a good lead,” Hickey meta-quoted Canadiens goalie Carey Price in a recent post on the team’s imaginary 6-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. “I could have practiced Thursday but we didn’t want to push it. I lost some weight because I couldn’t eat for two days.”

Hickey says it takes about an hour to watch EA’s condensed versions of simulated Habs games, four at a time. “We slow it down when there’s a goal,” he says. On game nights, he spends 45 minutes writing up the results, including stats provided by the video game. The quotes are his best guess—based on 44-years in the business—at what the players and coaches would say. “So far, nobody has accused me of misquoting them,” he says, “so I guess I’m doing O.K..” Habs winger Brian Gionta approached Hickey at a recent charity match to inquire if he had scored in that night’s imaginary game. (Gionta, for the record, had a goal and an assist.)

Hickey says he misses the genuine games but that there are some perks to covering hockey avatars. “When [the Canadiens] lose,” he says, “it’s a lot easier to get quotes out of guys when you make them up, rather than trying to find some guy who’s hiding.” On the downside, he’s not earning Marriott Rewards (MAR) points from all those away games. (The hotel chain doesn’t recognize simulated travel.) So he’s not sure he’ll be able to take his wife on vacation this year.

Last weekend, Hickey’s pseudo-game wrap was the most-read sports story on the Gazette‘s website. It’s not the only case of collective NHL hallucination. In Columbus, Ohio, according to the website Deadspin, Blue Jackets fans gathered at R-Bar, outside the team’s arena, to watch an EA simulated match with the Vancouver Canucks on big-screen TVs. The Washington Post reports that Capitals fans have been doing the same at a bar in Arlington, Va. EA is also logging the entire simulated season on its website and at ESPN (DIS).

Hickey says those fake Canadiens games pale in comparison to the authenticity his paper puts into its pseudo matches. “We tinker with the lineup,” he says of the Gazette‘s bespoke simulated season. “We throw in the backup goaltender a couple of games. … We’ve moved some guys on different lines.”

David Courtney

Statement Regarding The Passing Of David Courtney
"David was tremendously passionate about the Kings, our fans and the game of hockey. His time with the Kings dates back to the mid 1970s both in our PR office as our public relations director and also with work he did in our video department before he took over full-time Public Announcing duties at the Forum and STAPLES Center. In the arena he was an institution – he was the voice of the Kings – and his work added so much to the live, in-game experience for our fans as it did for the Clippers and Angels as well. Next season would have been David’s 35th year with our franchise, and on behalf of the entire Kings organization and AEG we are incredibly saddened by this news and we send our deepest condolences to his wife Janet and the rest of the Courtney family."
-- Kings President, Business Operations Luc Robitaille
A bit stunned when I heard yesterday.
This guy was THE arena voice for the Kings.
Live games just aren't going to be the same.

NHL Rumors: Did Gary Bettman Admit to Having a Negative Impact on the NHL Lockout, Hockey

http://www.rantsports.com/nhl/2012/1...ockout-hockey/

Gary Bettman made his most interesting proposal of the 2012 NHL lockout when he suggested this week that negotiations should be conducted by the players and owners alone. On the one hand, he’s right; Gary Bettman and NHLPA brass have impeded progress and the season is in jeopardy because of their collective inability to negotiate. Perhaps removing them from the process would help move negotiations forward.

On the other side, this proposal is an absolute disaster for a desperate sport. Where is the leadership in hockey that all other sports have in abundance? Gary Bettman risks carving out a legacy as the commissioner that watched over the league through two lost seasons if a new CBA agreement cannot be reached soon. The idea that he should be removed from negotiation efforts only furthers the notion that Bettman is a detriment to hockey.

When the NFL faced a lockout last year, Roger Goodell worked long hours to bring the two sides together. Reason prevailed and no games were lost. The NBA faced similar issues and were expected to lose the season, but again an agreement was eventually reached. Strong leadership found a resolution in the two other major sports facing CBA issues, but the NHL lacks direction. Because Gary Bettman is a poor leader, lost seasons have become a regular threat to the stability of the NHL.

The idea of removing leadership from the negotiation process is essentially an admission of guilt. Gary Bettman feels that negotiations would move forward more effectively without him. Because Bettman and the NHLPA leaders are on a path towards a lost 2012-13 NHL season, perhaps negotiations led by the players and owners could be effective. Still, it is a shame that the NHL lacks leadership capable of finding resolutions and preserving the game for its fans.

In the end, Gary Bettman got it right. He has no place in negotiations because he is an inept leader, unaware of the best direction for hockey. Expansion has failed, a controversial TV deal with NBC over ESPN has done little to grow the sport, rule changes have made hockey more dangerous than ever, and the 2012 NHL Lockout threatens the stability of the league.

In fact, why not take Gary Bettman’s latest proposal a step further in the wake of failed mediation efforts? Perhaps the NHL should simply move forward without its commissioner all together, as he’s proven himself a detriment to both the league and this year’s lockout negotiations.

Dustin Penner interns for Conan O'Brien

http://www.yardbarker.com/author/art...mb_main_col_10

Dustin Penner is currently out of work. Like many other hockey players he's also one very bored man. While other hockey players have shifted abroad to continue working in their area of expertise, Penner decided to go in a totally different direction.

Penner announced through his Twitter account that he found a new place to work during the lockout - on Conan. He Tweeted two photos, both of which you can see above which are from behind the scenes at Conan. Based on the first photo, the one at the top with Penner skating on rollerblades, it's clear he is trying to lighten the dreary mood surrounding the lockout.

In an article with the Toronto Sun, Penner joked that he was trying to "bully his way to the top of the food chain at TBS". In the same article it was revealed that Penner's skit may or may not make an appearance on Conan in the near future, depending on how it is received internally.

Penner, known mostly for his crippling pancake injury, is also known for having a sharp sense of humor. Let's see if it pays off for him as he tries to kill some time during the lockout.

^^ Well, that's SOP when meeting Penner.

Anything less is considered a faux pas.

Hey, I wonder how the player/owner meetings went today? I'll bet they kinda went something like this:

Sidney: Hi, we're here to talk about closing the gap so we can play hockey.

Burkle: STFU kid, I pay your wage now go sit your punk a$$ down...

The Penguins are sending everyone over the boards to try to end the NHL lockout.

Mario Lemieux arrived in New York on Tuesday, a day in which progress between the owners and players was facilitated in large part by co-owner Ron Burkle on one side and team captain Sidney Crosby on the other. Lemieux and team CEO David Morehouse are expected to attend the Board of Governors meeting Wednesday, multiple sources said.

Burkle and Crosby were described by participants in the five-hour talks as voices of reason. Their shared point of view: The NHL should not risk another round of canceled games — they’re already canceled through Dec. 14 — and the league may not recover if a season is lost to a labor dispute for the second time in eight years, the sources said.

Talks between the NHL and its Players’ Association continued late into Tuesday.

The Penguins are a moderate in the labor war, but they will not break ranks at the Governors’ meeting, sources said. Rather, their contingent will try to establish what owners need to reach an agreement, the sources said.

Crosby also will not break ranks with the players’ union, but his objective over the past week has been to establish common ground among players who have lost trust in NHL ownership and management as a whole, the sources said.

Over the past few weeks, Crosby, Burkle and Lemieux have privately discussed plans to bridge the gap between players and owners. The sources said all three had grown frustrated with the lack of progress.

Crosby and Burkle flew to New York together Monday. Burkle lives in suburban Los Angeles. Crosby’s Los Angeles-based agent, Pat Brisson, also was on the flight, the sources said.

None of the Penguins’ management contingent was available for comment, but Crosby told the Tribune-Review on Tuesday morning, “Ron is a great owner. He wants everything to be first class, and he cares about everyone in the organization. He only wants what’s best for the team.”

The Penguins had no voice in previous labor meetings during the lockout, but the sources said Burkle requested to be involved early last week. His net worth is $3.5 billion, built on a California grocery empire, and he gained a reputation of helping strike deals with the unions he employed.

Among the other owners in the talks Tuesday was Tampa Bay’s Jeff Vinik, who has become a favorite of Burkle and Lemieux since Vinik purchased the Lightning in February 2010. Lemieux has discussed ways to end the lockout with Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, a fellow Hockey Hall of Famer, the sources said.

In all, six owners met with 18 players, including the Penguins’ union rep, Craig Adams. The meeting involved large group discussions and smaller sessions among teams — not dissimilar to an NHL general managers’ meeting.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and union special counsel Steve Fehr attended, but commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr were not present.

Four owners not previously involved in talks attended the meeting. The NHL invited an unlimited number of players.

The sources said Burkle and Crosby shared the belief that players needed to hear from new owners because of the narrative that a handful of hard-line owners — the Boston Bruins’ Jeremy Jacobs has gained the most publicity in this category — were hijacking the process.

Burkle, Lemieux and Crosby are aware they risk pushback from their respective sides for trying to establish trust, but they felt that risk was worth the reward, the sources said.

The divides remaining between the sides include the definition and split of revenue, guaranteeing current players’ contracts and contractual rights such as free agency and maximum term limits
