8 games for some hits to the head....other hits to the head ZERO game suspension.
MALONE AVOIDS SUSPENSION FOR HIT ON CANADIENS' CAMPOLI
ampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Malone will not be suspended for his hit on Montreal Canadiens defenceman Chris Campoli.
NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan made the call on Monday, saying this decision was his "most difficult to date."
"We felt that this hit was the most challenging one so far in this pre-season for the Department of Player Safety to evaluate," said Shanahan. "In the end, we felt that Malone had committed to the hit when Campoli was upright. However, when the contact was made, Campoli's head position significantly changed just prior to the hit.
"There are elements about the hit that we don't like - specifically, the principal point of contact being the head and that it was not a full-body check. But the overriding factor in our judgment was that Campoli's loss of the puck and subsequent bending forward for it just prior contributed significantly, if not entirely, to those elements."
Malone received a five minute major penalty and a game misconduct on Saturday when he hit Campoli with a shoulder to the head near the mid-point of the third period. Campoli, who the club signed last week and was only in his second game with the club, was forced to leave the game.
Campoli took part at practice on Monday as the Canadiens began their team-building session in Collingwood, ON. Head coach Jacques Martin said the blueliner did not suffer a concussion or experience post-concussion symptoms.

ESPN's team rankings are shit.
BTW why is Crosby STILL out? I've heard of people being out with a concussion but still out when he got it in JANUARY? Is his a special case because it was a really bad concussion or are they being super extra safe with him because he is Sidney Crosby?

Didn't want to comment on that hit until I saw it. Not sure how Malone didn't get suspended there considering what's already been given out. So yeah, he has some explaining to do on that one IMO. But lets not let one questionable decision derail the good he's done so far.

Why? Because you can't when you treat each hit on a case by case basis....with varying factors that will effect the decision.
There is no set standard for discipline and punishment. Thus we will have the same old same old. Guys getting +8 games, while others get none.
Shanny has good intentions, but his implementation is badly executed.

I love the analogy Crosby used in his press conference a few weeks back. He mentioned how a high stick, whether accidental or not (A lot of them are clearly accidental IMO) draw a penalty regardless. There's no guess work for the official or anyone else.
If they implement the same thing when it comes to head contact, there would be a lot more consistency. Will there be some people unfairly punished? Of course, but its all part of the process. Look at the NFL and how strict they are with QB hits and head hits. Its working.

You can also the effects of a high stick immediately on the ice. But many high sticks are missed as well.
It much harder to call a hit in hockey than NFL. I just looked at the Steckel "hit" again, Steckel was trying to get around Crosby. Crosby turn into Steckel. And the hit to Crosby by Hedman, IIRC was a clean legal hit.

The fans who were all "rah-rah" for Shanny when he threw out the 8 game suspension right off the bat, are clueless. It's that type of discipline on a "Shanny sliding scale" that's going to make fans, GM's, and players pissed.
No consistency whatsoever, no definite lines drawn, and players will still not know what is "permissible" and what is not. Is this hit going to get me 10 games...maybe 2 games....maybe zero....who knows....only Shanny and his interpretation, his opinion of what a player was thinking on the ice, and hopefully multiple camera angles.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...starting off with 8 games and a half million salary lost was a bad, bad way to go. Now we have a zero suspension after a head hit that a guy got laid out for.

The logic is simple: If the suspension is harsh enough, players will think twice before sticking their elbows/shoulders out to another player's head. Period. Where I disagree with your reasoning is that you think head-hits will continue to be an epidemic happening every second game and that all the rosters will be completely depleted of players because every 2nd player on every team will be serving 8-10 game suspensions.
Again, I disagree. I think given the standard laid by Shanahan early in the season so far (exception, is Malone's), most players will think twice befeore plowing into someone recklessly.
The panel on CBC discussed this at length and all shared this view as well...
But, sorry...we're all clueless. Thanks.

It's not 100% the NFL fined about six people in preseason alone. And I think four in just four weeks of the season.
You can also the effects of a high stick immediately on the ice. But many high sticks are missed as well.

I don't think the Steckel hit was dirty, just my but it's the type of hit that should have been penalized, even if we just start with a 2 minute minor. The Hedman hit may have been clean by definition of the rule, but its the type of hit that should be outlawed and penalized. Rules should and can change.

And I think Shanahan's attempt here is consistent...he's looking at the hitter and the person getting hit using the victim's head and where it is leading to and at the impact to make his rulings.
So, clearly, he's putting the onus on both parties. It's not perfect but again, I think a nice step in the right direction. Sure is better than last season.

Well, thanks for calling me and others in this thread who supported Shanahan's rulings as "clueless".

Cleary Shanny does not agree with you. He gave out an 8 gamer, and then a zero gamer. So much for the logic of harsh punishments. Players now have no idea what or if they will get a suspension. It's as ambiguous as ever.
Nobody wants players laid out for cheapshots to the head, and this inconsistent suspension policy does nothing for stopping that.
