It was a north/south hit which the league has not really been penalizing with supplementary discipline. I don't think it had the malicious intent of some of the other elbows to the head we've seen recently but I think the league should have given him a few games to send a message. Just like high sticking, whether it's intentional or not, you need to be in control of yourself and your equipment.

Looked awfully intentional to me, it was still a blind side head shot, and you can't tell me that he didn't lead with his elbow. He went straight at the head with his elbow, and the guy wasn't looking. Just another example of the league not giving a shit about dirty plays meant to injure.

NHL's Shame: Todd Bertuzzi Deserves a 10 Game Suspension but Won't Get It
So Detroit Red Wings winger Todd Bertuzzi elbowed a guy in the face over the weekend.
"Perfect," I thought, "this is a great way to see if the NHL is serious about headshots and ridding them from the game."
Did the NHL step up and deliver a Matt Cooke-like suspension for the Red Wings?
Of course it didn't.
This is the NHL we're talking about here, the poorest-run league in the sports world outside of boxing. It announced there will be no disciplinary hearing and no further punishment will take place.
What a joke.
So, let me get this straight. Matt Cooke gets suspended for 14-17 games for elbowing a guy in the face because he's a repeat offender. Todd Bertuzzi, who almost killed Steve Moore, gets nothing for the exact same play.
Some people, like the moronic Pierre LeBrun, will declare that the elbow wasn't that bad because Bertuzzi "didn't mean" to do it. Garbage.
If you high stick someone, it doesn't matter your intent, it doesn't matter if it was an accident, you are responsible for your own stick, but Todd Bertuzzi isn't responsible for his own elbow?
Others have claimed that Bertuzzi has a clean record this season. Oh, goodie. He only broke a guy's neck a few years ago, ended his hockey career, and nearly killed him...but he's been a real nice guy this year.
Bertuzzi is yet another benefit of the NHL front office's bias towards the Original Six teams. The Red Wings get a pass because they are the Red Wings. Todd Bertuzzi is a dirty, scummy hockey player who deserves at least a 10-game suspension and yet he gets nothing. If you can't see the bias here, then I don't know what to tell you.
How is any fan supposed to respect the NHL's disciplinary team when crap like this is permitted? Matt Cooke deserved 100% to be suspended for his elbow, no question. Todd Bertuzzi deserved just as much.
The bottom line: It doesn't matter what you meant to do, if the player was injured, or if you're a nice guy. Todd Bertuzzi viciously elbowed another player in the head and received no punishment outside of a five-minute major.
The NHL should be ashamed of itself.

Bert has been a model citizen since he joined the winningest club of the modern era, so for 97Black to put him in the same category as Cooke is a complete joke.
And yes Yummy Cakes, it was a great game with playoff caliber pace. Don't gloat too much though, Hawks/Wings finish with a home & home.

I'm with Herbalist on this one. It wasn't a blindside hit, he saw it coming and did what good hockey players do, he took the hit to make the play. To me it looks more like a clothes line than an elbow but nonetheless was to the head.
blackack you gotta take off your rose colored penguin glasses. The only guy I've ever seen throw elbows as consistently as Cooke was "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Cooke also likes to sweep in from behind the players line of vision and clips them directly with the elbow.

The Chicago bench was yelling at him to get his head up. It was Bert's first game since he tweaked his back and I suspect he backed into him so he didn't put torque on it again. It was unfortunate he had his elbow up - but I don't think it was intentional. Having said that, I am surprised that there was no follow-thru discipline from the league given all the publicity on hits to the head.

In SoCal we don't have what you call "winter".
The rink is the same no matter what time of year.

I love outdoor shinny. A lot of what I play in the winter is on the outdoor rinks.
Nice. What does ice cost per hour in SoCal?
I played in a roller league in the early days of rollerblades. Traction was an issue for sure.

What the hell did the always classy Chicago bench say to Thornton after he took the skate blade to the head. The guy needed to get 40+ stitches but he was ready to take on the whole blackhawks bench. Massenhoven didn't seem to like it either.
It was kinda funny to see the whole babyhawks bench look at their feet quietly when Chara skated over to the bench to say hi.

The biggest yappers on Chicago last season were Versteeg, Ladd, Eager, and Burish...those guys are gone.
And meh...if Chicago really wanted a slugfest, they would've dressed Scott.
