The sizzle in the Steak
That's like me judging you for who you work with..
If you don't like the Pens and Mario then just say it.
But I see no point bitching about the instigator rule in one hand and bitching that no one should speak up about it in the other. But you complaining and rumbling on a forum might help the matter

I had great respect for Mario, but I would have never thought he would be such a blow-hard.
I never said nobody should complain about it. I don't think you read the posts very well. I have said however that former players (like Mario) will look like blow-hards if they "speak up".
It should be the current group (players, owners, league) who if they don't like it or see that it turns fans away, they should do the talking. They have the credibility.
Any news yet on Mario leaving the game?

I'm actually surprised the league hasn't done something about repeat offenders. They seemed to take a strong stance on Avery then gave up again. They have had several opportunities with Cooke and others. I say introduce a multiplier. Repeat offender? 2x normal length of suspension, 3x, 4x, 5x, make them less valuable when GM's are looking at them and slowly push them out of the league. That would make Cookes suspension at like 40+ games instead of the 4 or 6 games or whatever he got.
exactly,
I have said this to my friends and coworkers repeatedly.

Versteeg to the Flyers
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=353885
Kris Versteeg's tenure in Toronto has been a very short one as sources tell TSN that the Toronto Maple Leafs have sent the 24-year old forward to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a pair of draft picks, one of them being a first round pick.
I feel the need...

anyone care to take bets on how long it will be until someone blindsides Matt Cook, and then the rest of the line starts smashing away at him with their sticks?

This would be basically their 3rd year in a row without picks in the first 2 rounds...Nuts, if you ask me.

I don't get this Versteeg trade. Sure he's no sniper. But he's a bonafide solid NHL players that will net you 20 every year. And he's only 24. I think Burke just liked hearing the term '1st round pick' When in reality its going to be a 30th overall. Which is pretty much rolling the dice. Oh well, I got time......I hope.

Does he want too much money or make too much? 1st round sounds good til, like you pointed out, it will be the end of 1st round. I agree he's def a guy you could keep around to teach the "hopefully" upcoming prospects.
But it's two picks, with a first...

Flyers paying big....rolling the dice....one shot to win it all this year.

Another dice roll. 3rd rounder. I don't mind picks buts isn't it a little too late for Burke to start building form the draft..... And as recently as 3 weeks ago he said he doesn't want picks back but NHL players or guys almost ready. Isn't that exactly what Versteeg is? Me thinks he's lost.

After all, Burke just went out and picked up the 4.25 mill per year contract of Joffrey 'oft injured and under productive' Lupul. And has to eat that for 2.5 years.
Burke is spinning in circles.

Now this was the kind of high impact move I've been waited for!!!
No points and 43 minutes in penalties.... I don't know what to think.
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Aaron Voros from the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional 7th round draft pick.
Voros will report directly to the Leafs' American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
In 12 games with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL this season, Voros has no points and 43 minutes in penalties.

Versteeg would hardly be a nightmare. 24 year old 20 goal/50 point man. He can't demand much.

THRASHERS SIGN BYFUGLIEN TO 5-YEAR, $26 MILLION EXTENSION
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=353985
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Thrashers locked up defenceman Dustin Byfuglien to a long-term contract Tuesday.
The US$26-million extension runs through the 2015-'16 season.
"Dustin has emerged into an elite player this season and been invaluable as a leader both on and off the ice," Thrashers general manager Rick Dudley said in a release. "It was a priority to sign him and we're looking forward to witnessing his all-star calibre play for many years to come."
Byfuglien, 25, leads the team with 43 points (17 goals, 26 assists) this season.
He has 152 points (72-80) in 318 career games with the Thrashers and Chicago Blackhawks. Byfuglien has 25 points (14-11) in 39 career playoff games.
He will receive $4.25 million for the next two seasons, $5.75 million in 2013-'14 and 2014-'15, and $6 million in 2015-'16.
The six-foot-five, 265-pound native of Minneapolis, Minn., won a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks last spring. He was traded to the Thrashers in the off-season.

Everything wrong with the NHL's concussion policy on display tonight in Boston. Mikail Grabovski was obvioulsy concussed not once but twice. Both times he had difficulty getting up and getting to the bench. And when he got there, not even a visit by the trainer, nevermind being removed from the game.
Interestingly enough, after both hits he goes on to score a goal. His second the game winner, and a beauty at that.

Sens' firesale continues...Ruutu or Neil would be a nice pick-up for any playoff team needing a bit of bite/agitation...

Leafs general manager Brian Burke said today that Grabovski did not suffer a concussion during the game.
“He would not have been allowed to return to play had he exhibited any symptoms of concussion,” Burke said via e-mail.
Burke added that Grabovski would not need to see a specialist today given a concussion had already been ruled out.
The NHL’s concussion protocol is laid out clearly on its website, with the head of the league and players’ union’s Concussion Working Group Dr. Reuben Echemendia describing the process.
“When a player comes off the ice and is suspected of having a concussion, the team athletic trainer, typically on the bench, will do an initial evaluation,” Enchemendia said. “If that evaluation raises concern with respect to concussion, then that player is taken to the dressing room, where a more extensive evaluation is undertaken by the team physician and the team athletic trainer.
“If at that time the player is determined to have had a concussion, then that triggers the concussion protocol, which means the player must be kept out of play until they are symptom-free, both at rest and on exertion.
“They are also then tested with a neuropsychological -- fairly extensive neuropsychological test battery conducted by the conducting neuropsychologist for each team. Those test data in consultation then go to the team physician, who integrates all of the data and makes the return-to-play decision.”
Because he did not appear to miss a shift in the game, playing close to his regular 19 minutes in ice time, Grabovski was likely only assessed on the bench by a team trainer after being hit by Chara.
In the midst of a breakout season, Grabovski is the Leafs leading goal scorer and is tied for 15th in the NHL with 24 after 56 games. He is expected to play tonight against the Buffalo Sabres.

“I feel bruise in my eyes,” Grabovski told AM640 after the game. “But like I tell it before, it give me more motivation to play harder.”

Mean flipping hit, but can't see suspension for that.
NHL doesn't run the minor leagues. They have there own governing bodies.
