FWIW officially the Kings final offer to Kovy was 15 years and $80 million.

The league averages it out, so like Moog said, its an 8.8 mill cap hit regardless of what they pay him.
I can't see Lou doing that. Only way out of the hit is to either buy it out or have the player retire, which is likely in about 10 years time.

ESPN has edited that article. More realistic ....I guess.
Ilya Kovalchuk is staying with the New Jersey Devils.
Kovalchuk has signed a 17-year deal worth slightly more than $100 million, a source told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside, ending a three-week courtship that also included offers from the Los Angeles Kings. He was also pursued by the New York Islanders and SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL.
Should Kovalchuk play until the end of the deal, when he'll be 44, the source clarified that the forward will have earned more than $150 million as an NHL player, including his time with the Atlanta Thrashers.

6.1 is almost bearable. He'll likely get all or most of the 100+ mill in the first 7 or 8 years.

both teams match up well...devils lead the league in goals against...and the kings scored 20 more goals then them..
goaltending is even considering brody is a grandpa and quick is fantastic
devils defense is good...but they lost martin who was most injured last yr...but dont forget tallinder and volchenkov
Im a huge devils fan but I watched a lot of kings hockey last year... doughty and johnson are awesome.
kings had a break out season last yr....let's see what happens this yr (see if kopitar falls off again)

They have a very impressive Top 6. Adding Kovy would more or less create a line-up similar to Chicago's last season when Hossa was signed.
And I'm a big advocate of believing championships are born from the defence and out. Well, Doughty, Johnson et al...that's a defense better than NJ's. NJ has a good defensive number because they trap the opposition to a coma...not because of their players.
chips and smokes, lets go
Intentional or not, this looked pretty cool.

contracts like that make me sick
and if i was him and getting a contract like that, why the hell wouldn't you give up a few mill and sign with the Kings? living in LA vs NJ

^^ Would you take an additional $22 mill to live in Jersey?
I wouldn't...but Kovalchuk did.
I wouldn't...but Kovalchuk did.
That shootout goal was intentional. He never took his eye off the puck. He never looked like he was searching for the puck in his feet either. His blade was way to far from the puck too. Nice backhand though.

For $22M, I'd live in NJ.

Listened to Dean Lombardi interview on the Fan 590 today.......
Boy am I glad the Kings did not sign Kovy.
It sounded like Dean was shocked by how much NJ (over) paid for Kovy.
Dean said in hindsight the Kings were never in the ballpark for Kovy considering how much Lou threw down for him.
The Kings offer was $22 mill less, and on top of that no where near that huge of a frontload of $$$ in the contract (although he didn't say how much the first years were loaded in the Kings offer).

Alright, being a goaltender, I can tell you that this shot was NOT intentional. First, it's during practice. Second, the shooter took a full windup. Third, in a real game, the goal he scored would not have counted...the referee would have not allowed the goal after the original shot (the slapshot) was attempted and taken (basically). At that point, the play is dead after the shooter makes his original attempt at the shot. This "play" is actually 2 shots. You only get one shot attempt during a shootout.

Ummm, Contract rejected by the NHL...
And Moog, get your own all sports radio station.
The NHL has rejected Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL's salary cap.
Kovalchuk was slated to earn $95 million over the first 10 years of the deal and then just $7 million over the last seven seasons. That would translate to an annual cap hit of $6 million per year.
TSN Insider Darren Dreger explains that the deal was rejected due to the fact that the NHL does not believe that either Kovalchuk nor the Devils expected the 2004 Rocket Richard trophy winner would be playing near end of the contract and that it is a case of artificially lowering the annual average value of the contract. The Devils must now either file the contract once again or the Players' Association can file a grievance.
Should the NHLPA decide to file a grievance, the contract would remain dead until an arbitrator determines otherwise.
The current collective bargaining agreement states that a player who signs a contract before the age of 35 can retire and have his contract come off a team's salary cap; however, teams must negotiate the contract in question in a good faith effort to have the player remain in the league for the duration of the contract.
The current CBA explains circumvention as the following in section 26.3:
(a) No Club or Club Actor, directly or indirectly, may: (i) enter into any agreements, promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind, whether express, implied, oral or written, including without limitation, any SPC, Qualifying Offer, Offer Sheet or other transaction, or (ii) take or fail to take any action whatsoever, if either (i) or (ii) is intended to or has the effect of defeating or Circumventing the provisions of this Agreement or the intention of the parties as reflected by the provisions of this Agreement, including without limitation, provisions with respect to the financial and other reporting obligations of the Clubs and the League, Team Payroll Range, Player Compensation Cost Redistribution System, the Entry Level System and/or Free Agency.
The 27-year-old rejected a $101 million, 12-year extension from the Atlanta Thrashers before being dealt to the Devils in February.
Kovalchuk had 41 goals and 44 assists last season, including 10 goals and 17 assists with the Devils.

Ever take a slapshot and whiff on the puck? You kinda lose a bit of balance. Watch his eyes how it stays on the puck and doesn't for a second move towards the net. How his foot immediately kicks it to his blade as his does his fake shot. It's also kind of etiquette that people don't take slapshots within the hash marks during any kind of practice.
The first "shot" isn't a shot because he never even touched it. It's a fake. The rule is you have to keep in motion. You just can't score on a rebound.

good for the league, that contract is a joke

But somehow I don't see Lou taking this news lying down.
The sizzle in the Steak
I do. Lou is putting the "blame" on management.
Is Lou in bed with Bettman .....Lou creates outlandish contract so that the league can take a stand against Hossa/Kovy type contracts? Conspiracy theorists UNTIE!
Is Lou forced to sign Kovy by management....because management needs an iconic player for the next few years when all the "old" Devils retire....and the ownership has a team with an icon player to sell?
Who knows?
I think Kovy may have been played by his agents. They are all about their cut.
It does not make sense to play in NJ versus L.A.....sure there is a lot more coin in NJ....but soon down the road the team is dead from cap hell....Kovy will be the loan gunman.

.....and IMHO I think he stays in NJ.
Why?....because I don't think there is an arbitrator that is going to rule otherwise when a precedent has been already set with Pronger/Hossa contracts already found legal.
....and unless there is a smoking gun, how do you prove that both sides did not negotiate the contract "in good faith"?
It's a mess.......get ready for a lock-out in a couple of years that makes the previous lock-out look like a walk in the park.
