No big loss IMO. Lebda was a good grab too.

I just heard about it too. Sounds like a good move for the Leafs.

I haven't taken the contract numbers into consideration though.

Hard to say...I don't know much about the Leaf prospects that the Hawks got back until I looked them up (I only know of Schenn, Kadri these days).

Looks like Stalberg may turn out to be decent. But, only time will tell.

I'm more sore about losing Ladd than the others right now.

Don't like the idea. Thought Lombardi knew what he was doing.

^ I see nothing wrong with the Kings going for Kovy. The guy may be that final piece that helps the Kings to elite status in the Conference.

And honestly, if it means a shot at the Cup, why not. There has been no team that has been "safe" from the cap after a Cup.

Depends on the $$ involved. If they pay him anywhere near 8-9 mill per year over 6+ then its a terrible idea IMO.

Just more of the Leafs mortgaging the future for some playoff revenue. New GM, new players, new coach same old BS. The board is still running the team. We'll be back to square 1 in 3-4 years when Burke gets axed.

Oof...hope not. That's way too much with the upcoming RFAs Waldorf was talking about prior.

Word is he wants 10 mill per. Which nobody will give him. But 8-9 isn't out of the question.

He should have taken Atlanta's offer a few months back.

I am somewhat surprised that Burke et al won't admit they need to rebuild.

And oh, just remembered: I think Paradis will be decent too. He's a former 1st rounder (from the Canes) who may turn out to be a good 2-wayer. Blistering shot too.

Just a warning for you about Versteeg. The guy was arguable the most creative player behind Kane on the Hawks. However, he is VERY prone to the 1-on-5 thing in the opposition zone. And he does cough up the puck often. On the Hawks, he could hide that behind a very deep team that played good defense overall...

Not sure about a young team like the Leafs though. So...just a heads up.

He can't. He has to bring in some playoff revenue or he's toast. Its when happens when a pension fund owns the team. Its all about profits and nothing to do with doing it right. It kinda worked without a cap. No chance it works with.

Why do you think Colangelo (Raptors) won't admit to needing a re-build either. He needs the playoffs to save his job. I mean, when in the same conf as Miami, Boston, Atlanta and Orlando do you really have any shot of winning? Of course not but they're not planning on bottoming out.

And yes, vacation for a couple of weeks.

Picked them up at the Ferrari store in Rome. Modena was too far north from where we were staying. Next time. 2 weeks isn't enough.

Not really....the word is that he is looking for +100 million...not so much how much per year as the total amount.....in the cap era, GM's can string the contract out for many many moons to lower the cap hit......trouble is getting insurance for carzy long contracts is tough.

Such is the cap era......until the next CBA.....the current deal is a mess, and will change quite a bit.....and that's why nobody is signing Kovy.....everyone is looking 2 years down the road.

Well, the owners got what they wanted.

Days of dynasty-type franchises are over. I guess it does help create parity although, the bad franchises are still the bad franchises in many ways.

And you're ok with this?

Doughty should be able to do it on his own anyway. You could throw wstevens and yumchah out there with him and he'd dominate.

It's prolly more acceptance than anything.

It's the only way to get a top-tier type player these days and not shoot yourself in the foot.

But, book it: there is NO way any team can keep everyone especially if the team hits the big one in the playoffs.

Detroit could not do it. Pittsburgh could not do it. And Chicago could not do it.

The only way is to mark the "core" players and then recycle via the pipeline with the other 6-8 players.

Never said I was....in fact I always thought Dean would never go for Kovy.
I'm still surprised the Kings are still in it.

I can only hope Dean is playing a mean game of poker with Kovy and his agent......I tend to think he is.

Until the CBA.cap is revised, and the NHL moves to a lux-tax system or something different, how can anyone expect to sign the best players in the league for +$100million deals and not have a crazy long contract?

In the end if there was no cap, Dean would sign Kovy for his $10 mill a year for 5-7 years max.....but that's not how it works in the current deal.

It's a bad deal, and needs to change, and probably will.

Kovalchuk Has Massive 17-Year Deal on Table From New Jersey

From CNNSI...

The prized free agent of the NHL's 2010 free-agent class, Ilya Kovalchuk, has a 17-year contract worth more than $100 million from the New Jersey Devils on the table, according to a report by The New York Post. The deal would be the longest in NHL free-agency history, topping the 12-year deal Marian Hossa signed with the Chicago Blackhawks last summer.

The contract is supposedly front-loaded so that Kovalchuk would receive at least $100 million through the first 10 years of the contract. Before he was shipped to New Jersey from Atlanta on February 4, he turned down contracts of $70 million through seven years and $100 million through 12 from Atlanta. Kovalchuk enjoyed his time in New Jersey at the end of last season.

It looks like the reported 17-year deal is Kovalchuk's best offer yet. St. Petersberg of the KHL has shown interest, while the Los Angeles Kings have dropped out of the bidding twice. This saga has carried on for almost two weeks now. Kovalchuk is expected to make his decision within the next few days.

Doubt it. There is no bigger attention-whore in sports right now based on LeBron's antics in free agency.

Although, somewhere...TO is probably thinking of a way to top this once the NFL season starts.

He plays basketball...he should join the Heat. Cuz, with the way their cap is and what's left in free-agency...

Although, watching him and those 3 would be pure comedy.
