PS3, PS4, PC: Diablo 3
I couldn't run the Beta as I am on windows XP professional but don't have service pack 3 installed. I have Direct X 9.0c which is fine... I tried going to the microsoft website to install SP3 as it wasn't automatically installing from automatic updates. i download the file "for IT professionals" (bigger download), and then try and run it, and it says "...is not a valid Win 32 application"...
am I not going to be able to play D3 without the latest service pack? if so, how would I install the service pack 3?

Going to play with some friends. Never played any Diablo game minus the old PS1 Diablo when I was younger. Anything I should know about the storyline? Going to be a Mage.
For those of you wanting to pre-install the pre-installer before the actual install: (for both digital and dvd hard copies)

Seriously if you haven't noticed Blizzard's track record with launches of any game that is online, they have been shit, with the exception of Starcraft 2 but that has an offline mode.
It was like this for World of Warcraft, I expected thisI bet it takes 3 days before anything is actually smoothed out, 37 million people trying to play at once.

Charged Bolt stops working. Frost Nova stops working. The zombie I’m fighting keeps groaning and flailing his arms at me, but nothing happens. We’re both impotent. I run around and nudge some other zombies, also moaning but also unable to strike. My first disconnect!
I alt+tab out to check my net connection, and it’s working fine. When I get back in, the game’s quit to the main menu with an error saying there’s been an error – it has a number but no specifics. When I try to get back in, it throws up another error that says to make sure all of my party is ready. I’m playing single player. In a few minutes I’m able to log back in and play again. I’ve lost all my progress through the current zone and the world has reset and repopulated with monsters, but my character, items and quest status are intact.

what's also concerning is the fact that since this is not a monthly subscription based game...eventually (several years, maybe a decade later) they'll just shut the servers down, effectively killing both SP and MP, and the game as a whole. Forcing you to get D4 when it comes out :P All it is is a long term rental. But admittedly 60 dollars over a decade is small.

Also having been a hardcore WoW player for the past 6 years, I wasn't surprised at the launch failure... its always been that way with all of Blizzard's games, except for SC2 (kind of).
D2 mp games were hosted over LAN though, or on one of the players' computers. Not on blizzard's servers. Blizzard just provided the login front end, but never hosted anything past that.
D3 on the other hand is literally a WoW server/client structure but with an online single player, and without the monthly payments. They'll most likely downgrade the service over time as players leave so it's transparent to the user. But hosting these servers isnt free. I think they're betting on the auction house for $$ for upkeep.
edit: correction, they also hosted games on D2. But also gave you the option of LAN play.
SC2 wasnt too bad because it had an offline SP. You could at least play that while you waited.
