General Car Talk Discussion Thread
So i ordered a 540i M sport that is currently in production. But the thought of this might be the last chance to get a 6mt 340i is very tempting. since it s been confirmed that G20 M340i will be 8AT only.
I know the auto is probably the obvious logical and practical choice.... but i kinda really want the 6mt F30 340 while it lasts for really stupid reasons knowing how the traffic is during my commute.
I am torn
I told my GF that i wanted to cancel the 540 order and get a 340 6speed... she gave me the "WTF is wrong with you? and dont you know how old you are now?" look.
For those who dont know. My last 2 cars:
2013 F30 335i 6mt
2015 F36 435i 8AT
So i have proven that i could live with the auto.... but ....

Both are comfortable enough to seat 5. i can live with either 1 .... I originally did not want another F3x since i have had 2 for the past 6 years or so. I am pretty sick of looking at the same interior (even tho the 340 will have digital cluster and stuff)
part of me want the 6mt.... and the other part is telling me i am stupid for even considering a 6mt as daily due to my commute.

Autotragics are finally at a level where they're really good.
It really depends on you and your commute. Are there side streets you can drive on that has less stop and go than that bumper to bumper bullshit? For me, my leg doesn't get tired, and I maintain a gap between the car in front of me. I would hate it whether I had an automatic or manuel, so it doesn't stop me from buying a car I don't want.
Bay Area traffic is terrible now compared to 10 years ago. Just for reference, it can take up to 1.5-2 hours to go 20 miles. Luckily my commute isn't too bad now and I can work from home.

^ the commute issue is not only about the traffic. The real issue is the traffic is always on the up hill part of the freeway. So you know the constant up hill start gets pretty tiring. Even tho it has Hill assist, it still gets pretty tiring.
I can only imagine doing legs then driving manuel up a long uphill grade... good thing I have AAA
I thought laser light was not legal here yet.... look at that digital cluster and laser light????

rebates and incentives aside, True car price is just average. Based on my experience, it is a price that you dont get ripped off like paying paying MSRP on a Camry. But you definitely could do much better than the true car prices. Just FYI.
Right, would keep that in my pocket as a bargaining chip, just wasn't sure if it precluded incentives/rebates.
The dealer nearest my house, I've got a certificate for just over $2k off. If I can combine that with current discounts in place, makes for an appealing deal.

That is what i am saying. Dont take the incentive into considerations as part of dealer's discount. I mean, are you happy with 2k off from the dealer? Just pretend the incentives do not exist.
The incentives are there no matter what. What is a real appealing deal is how about 4k off then add the incentives? It depends on the cars tho. So you might wanna do more research on what a typical real world discount structure is like.
For example, BMW is offering 4k in total incentive for BMW 3 series. Dealers cannot take that away since those are from the manufactures.
Instead of being satisfied with a total 6k off (4k +2k dealer discount), which is pretty good for most of the cars (10% -15% off MSRP depends on models). People are asking for 10k off. (4k incentive +$6k dealer discount) and they are getting 10k and more right now.
Obviously, every car is gonna be different.

GTI Autobahn DSG
Dealer near my office has one listed for just over $33k, marked down about $4,200 currently.
My agent was finally able to give me a sure rate & it's a hair more than the F150, so I'd need my current monthly payment to drop for it all to work out; which would work out to wanting to get an OTD price around $33.5k or lower.
Otherwise, it may be that the focus shifts to some 'warm' hatches instead....

I've thought of that too. trying to decide if an SE with leather is worth giving up DCC, auto climate, full power seats, radar cruise, nav, etc. DCC would be nice with some of the roads on my commute, if there's an appreciable difference between comfort/sport. Radar cruise would be nice, but not a big dealbreaker.

Also, if it were me, I'd forego the leather and go with the sick plaid seats with the SE.

Right, I get that they're the same, performance-wise, with the Autobahn having the DCC being the only real difference. It's all convenience features between them.
Would definitely go leather & DSG on an SE, found one in Night Blue for 29.9k, but it's a couple hours away, and one in Iron Blue just over $30k locally.
