When RED first debuted the Red One camera they were trying to showcase the ability to pull full res stills as an alternative to taking photos with the like of National Geographic, etc.

With the debut of the Red Epic...you have a movie camera that is purposely configurable to a "still camera"

And I'm sure there are some in the fashion world that use it in such a manner...I call farce on the whole thing.

I think there will be a point when the quality will be so high that still photos can be made from video. I do not think we are close to there yet. At least not pro-sumer level.

honestly you are wrong...because it happening as we speak.

But ease, ability, and convenience are not any where close.

I was talking about for pro-sumer level. i.e. you're not going to see a pro-sumer level person in public carrying around a RED on a photo trip.

No.

But it was the Nikon V or J that allows for simultaneous shooting of stills while shooting video.

On DSLRs if you snap a still mid filming, it breaks the clip which is bad.

It was very frustrating for me this weekend to get ANYONE to take a decent damn picture of me and the woman. First, her step dad, using my XZ1 was PUNCHING the shutter release button with his index finger like he was trying to pop a balloon... Four tries with no shot since he was only activating the autofocus, then four more blurry ones where he actually stabbed it long enough to get a blurry shot.

Switch to the Joby and her mom would FREAK out when the timer's little orange light would start flashing.

Nine tries later, I took what I could get. Seriously, she kept getting nervous about the light and she would move or turn to ask what it was doing. Every. Damn.Time.

THEN, the two of us were out to dinner and asked the waitress to take our pic on the way out with the Canon SD750. This thing is bullet proof. You gotta TRY to get a bad shot. She was trying. Hard. No luck there either.

I give up. I am on the verge of resorting to "arms length" photos of the two of us where I stretch my arm out and point the camera at myself...

just got this from another forum, still have to play with it, but it's FREE

The onOne Perfect Effects 8 plugin for Photoshop, Aperture, and Lightroom is currently available for free (for a limited time) at:

www.ononesoftware.com/landing/pe8offer/

Basically it's a collection of packaged effects, most of which look exaggerated at default settings, but perhaps some might be useful if adjusted properly.

Actually it seems that it also comes as a standalone app.

I downloaded it over the weekend, watched the videos, and deleted it without installing. I fail to see it doing anything I can't already do with LR, Photomatix, and CS6.

It's not what Perfect Effects 8 can do, it's what toolset is useful in that software. You have CS6, so it's like me saying "I fail to see why you also need LR". It's because LR has the toolset that you need to manipulate photos faster and easier than CS6. It's the same thing with Perfect Effects 8, and any other photo software out there.

Anyone around the Washington DC area want to chime in on what the crowds are like in and around the Mall/Monument area in February? I want to get there before the crowds make it impossible to do nice shots.

Also - I'd be driving so what about parking options?

Thanks!

Right now Adobe is doing a special $9.99 a month for the CC you get access to Photoshop CC and LR5. Kinda on the fence if I should jump on that or not. Does anyone else have it?

I don't know what it is about this cloud thing. But something about it just annoys me. Maybe i just get sick at the thought of ANOTHER monthly charge.

It's not a cloud thing. You don't have to be connect to use your software, it's installed on your computer. And you don't have to wait until a "next" version of the software is released to get new features. And if you NEVER have PS or LR, at $10 per month, it's an effing steal. And even if you have one or both, $10 per month, is just what it costs (or cheaper) you to upgrade under the old media system.

Normal cost for PS, what $600, upgrade were $199
Normal cost for LR $149, upgrades were $99

There's always people around, you just need to get out early on the weekend to see less of them. On the mall, there's a lot of parking, but you have to get there early and then most of it is time parking. You can also park a few blocks away from the Mall for metered parking. Best to have the phone app to pay for that.

Thanks Jup.

So there is street parking? I've read it's a nightmare driving into the area.

Are there a lot of people there at night? I'd like mostly sunset, blue hour, and night shots. I don't know if I'd be able to get there for sunrise.

February is probably a better time than most because it's cold. And if you're looking for monument shots, especially at night, you won't care that the landscaping isn't as pretty, right? Parking really depends. If there's no event, you can usually find a spot within a couple of blocks. There are also garages not *that* far away, as long as you don't mind a little walking.

Sometimes traffic around the mall is a nightmare, but sometimes really not. This time of year, it depends on whether there's an event in the area or not. Hit up einsatz - he lives in the District and may have some more pointed advice.

During the week, most people are getting out of town. So that'll be a plus. But there is metered street parking, not on the main roads like PennAve or Constitution. But the numbered streets that connect to them. Consitution and 17th is a good place to park for metered parking.

You could park in the lots near Maine Ave or along Ohio Dr as well.
