I use LR but its VITAL for me to be able to double-click a file in Explorer to see what is, for on-the-fly cataloging and identification purposes. It was super annoying that I couldnt open GF1 raw files via explorer, now it can.

yea if im copying something to a USB drive or something, id be nice to see the actual picture then the file name.

ok so hmm maybe it worked. I got those errors, and I can't double-click the files, but I just noticed its showing me previews of the files in Explorer. Maybe that's all its supposed to do. anyways, consider my temper quelled, for now.

anyone here old enough to have used film SLR's?
I remember the first time I was into photography, back in jr.high... my dad went home to visit Malaysia, and brought back a Nikon SLR (can't remember the model at the moment, but it had "20" in it... wasn't a high end model). And I learned it from messing around. It sucked that you'd have to wait for the film to be developed to see the results. And you'd have to write down the settings
I remember the first time I was into photography, back in jr.high... my dad went home to visit Malaysia, and brought back a Nikon SLR (can't remember the model at the moment, but it had "20" in it... wasn't a high end model). And I learned it from messing around. It sucked that you'd have to wait for the film to be developed to see the results. And you'd have to write down the settings

sort of...my dad has a N8008 that he got in the 80's. I played with it (not because he let me lol) here and there, but I never did anything serious with it, I was too young.
I can relate to having to write things down though, I was doing keyboard sound design and sequencing (music) back in the day on boards that didn't have any way to store those custom sounds for later retrieval, so I had to write everything down on a pad of paper.
oh and, I meant to post that photo in the random photo thread... abbreviated shortcuts FTL

I have for a short time, I was wait listed for a photo class in college. Rented out a cam. Used it for a week, didn't get the class and then returned it.
I'm actually glad I didn't take it, already knew everything they taught, since I had my XTi already.
I still wouldn't mind picking up an EOS 3 or a full manual camera.

I also owned a few newer EOS film bodies, which was fun, but if you don't have a place to develop your own film, not worth it.

I did take one class at a community college back then... and while it was cool to learn about the darkroom... IMO, just a lot of hassle

I have a funny story I don't think Ive mentioned here, when I started college, I was in the Institute of Design at IIT in Chicago. Because, I wanted to design cars (its what I did pretty much straight through HS). But after the first week of Design classes, I decided to shoot for pre-med (parents pushed me along that road) - but as I found out, your major didn't have to be necessarily science related. I mean, I could go through with the Design program, and then go into pre-med, as long as I had the core classes for pre-med. So I figured I would stick with Design. Then, I went to my first Photography class (this is still like the first or second week) and got the materials list. It was elaborate, I had to buy an SLR, developing materials, matting boards, frames, the whole nine yards like that. It was gonna cost over 1k easily just for the initial startup. I was like fawk that, if I'm heading to pre-med, it doesn't make any sense to spend this much money on photo stuff. So I switched my major to Bio and that was the last I ever saw any type of photography class.

with that ONE class I took... it was a "once-a-week" class... in the middle of the semester me and two friends decided to up, and go to Hawaii because there was a deal on airfares too cheap to pass up. Needless to say, I missed a week of class.... but when I presented my project, it was a picture taken in Hawaii... People were calling me out... as if, it was a picture taken by someone else OR I took it in the past. So, I told them that I "took a field trip" for the project.

I took a b&w film photography class in high school. It was the extent of my formal photo education. I always wanted to get back into it in college, but sort of like Rubin, my focus was medical, and I had used up all the non-major credits my parents would tolerate on classes like philosophy and art history. I have a developer that was passed down to me, but have never set it up. It really is a pain in the ass and you need very good ventilation for all the chemicals.
I switched to digital after my last film DSLR got destroyed in PR. I had used my previous one until it was too damaged to be worth fixing..made more sense to buy a new one than to replace the shutter. I still have my dad's old Canon, but only one lens for it.
To be honest, I love post processing my images. At least I do when I love the images. I've had a few portrait sessions that were tedious. And parts of weddings (formals) are slightly tedious to process, but for the most part I love making them look a way that makes my eyes happy. And I can do that on my couch instead of locked away with fumes in a darkroom. I'm glad to have learned a bit about the process (test strips, contrast filters, different papers, etc), but am happy with the present methods.

I love post processing images, it makes me open up. Even with the work that I know I have to do when taking the image. I can do some post and wake it up more than what I could do with taking it.

hmm looking into doing some mild hacking on the S95... apparently you can get it to shoot at 1/50,000.... and also tighter than the limit of f/8.0 (which I found disappointing)...
