C&P Random Thread -
...so, tonight, I learned a lesson the hard way. I was asked by a friend's friend if I can take some photos of his restaurant/lounge as a favor. They want to put up a site for this new establishment and need some photos that's better than random stuff people take with their P&S.
By no means, do I consider myself pro or anyone to be charging money for any work. I was a nervous about agreeing to this, but then... I figured... why not? I'd do it for the experience, and it's not like they are going to ask for their money back if they're not happy. The problem is, I'm still learning using the flash... I still prefer portraits with natural/ambient lighting... but using the flash (prior to tonight) was basically just mounting the flash and let the camera/TTL do it's thing.
So, tonight was just a trial run... it's a Wednesday night, it's going to be pretty slow
I get there and I immediately started taking some photos, and the owner's girlfriend wasn't liking what she was seeing. This place, like most restaurants/lounges... has a dark atmosphere... one corner has a blue-ish/purple light... and all of the test shots weren't showing this blue light, which is what she wanted. See photo below:

It got to a point where she was getting annoyed and I can tell she's whining to her boyfriend (the owner) in Korean that she's not happy where this was going (even though I don't speak Korean). Again, mind you... they're not even paying me for this. I'm a bit embarrassed because I don't know what else to do.
Then, it hit me
It's the damn white balance I need to fiddle with. So, with my camera, it has a pretty cool color spectrum thingy for white balance (see stock photo below)

so, I put the little dot towards the blue part and the first random shot was this: (random shot of one of their waitresses)

I showed it to the owner and his girlfriend and they said "That's it!"
phewwww
So, the lesson here is... Understand White Balance! I need to get cracking on some reading up
I'm suppose to go back on a busier night to take the actual shots, while I'm glad I learned the lesson tonight... I'm intimidated with the owner's gf
She reminded me why I'm NOT into Asian girls

A replaced shutter, wouldn't bother me. Be it new or old, a shutter will or will not fail at anything.

You may also find it helpful to crank up your ISO a bit (and therefore turn down the flash power) to allow more of the ambient atmosphere to expose the image. It's all about balancing the light. Just something else to play with if you want the blue light to be a little stronger. That will also help you to keep healthier skin tones on your subjects. She's gone a little magenta in your processed image, (though that may be true to life with the blue light in the restaurant).
No, if you go through the Canon loyality program, 1400+ for a refurbished one. All you have to do is purchase a broken p&s from eBay or somewhere from potn.

Kind of liking this new FB camera app, cuts out all the BS and lets you only see people's pictures. And much easier/faster to upload your own.
Has some limited filters too.
Btw the app in my experience runs muh faster than the stock FB app.
Yes you were right Srika
FB app is starting to run choppy for me on iPhone. iPad it runs great!

Where do some of you older folk (in regards to the photography world) find inspiration/creativity/ideas?
I know a lot of the time, it just requires you going out and shooting. Just getting the practice in. For some people it's natural. But for those whose it isn't.....
I feel like I've been in a rut. I look at some of my more recent shots I've done (within the last 6 months or so), and don't think they're "bad"....I feel like I've definitely gotten better since I initially invested in a DSLR and I do like some of them...but I rarely feel like I produce anything that has that real wow factor like I see from some of you. I like to share my shots, but I don't ever think "Damn. I really nailed that." or the like.
I don't ever want to be conceited, but I don't think it's wrong to be genuinely and rightfully proud of a shot. I just don't know how to get past where I am.
A couple times I've attempted to just go out on a limb somewhere in the city (or outside), just to go shoot...and I find myself uninspired. Maybe it's because I live in GD DFW and not a more picturesque place. But then again, I feel like many times, the shots that really make you go "wow" are the unconventional shots in places that might otherwise be looked over. I never seem to find THAT shot though. I feel like I probably pass them by and just don't, er "see" them.

I hear you on the rut, I feel like Ive been in one for a while myself. I just came home from a long weekend in the mountains, and my camera bag never came out of the closet in my bedroom up there. (Im blaming it on the black flies though)
I often find myself looking at other pictures from Boston trying to draw inspiration to get out and shoot in areas Ive never been, and often I will find amazing shots of places Ive been, but from a perspective I never saw.....or actually did look at, but didnt have the vision to make the shot.

I agree as being in a rut as well. Only recently when i was up early in the morning and seeing the sunrise coming up is when i had the inspiration to shoot. I would go around Miami as well shooting, but i feel with having a expensive camera, im going to get jacked
I hear ya. I had to take my brother to the airport early. When I was coming back I saw the sunrise and ran home and went back. Other than that I'm really in a funk to think outside of the box.
I try to go out and get sun rises every time I am in NH in the fall, its just so beautiful to see the sun rising over the mountains. I got up early for one last summer, and I was just junk for the rest of the day. We like to go for decent hikes during the day, and getting up waaay too early just doesnt work well for that
that said, I need to force myself to get out and shoot more around Boston again. I want to upgrade my body, but I need to shoot more to justify it to myself

I was up Sat, Sun and Monday this weekend at 4:45am for two days and 5:30am for the other. As I was telling someone who bailed on me yesterday morning, you can sleep when your dead!
Jup, the getting up early part isnt so bad, its that I end up too tired to enjoy the other things I like to do while Im there. At least theres still sunsets
when it got really cold at my old job (below 10*) we would get so busy that all of us would end up working 32 hr shifts, mostly in the cold, then go home for 4-5 hrs, only to come back in and work that same shift again.
I certainly dont miss those days

ok so i have been using my t2i more and more with all of the graduation parties i attend. my biggest issue is getting nice color out of my images. they all seem washed out or dull. does anyone have tips on making color more vibrant within the camera?
And yes, as mentioned by asianspec, Lightroom helps a lot, so shoot in RAW if you haven't started

Make sure you have enough good light to start with.
I was wondering why a couple photos (in Flickr) that I took/uploaded over a year ago are suddenly getting viewed again (all in one day). Someone in one of the Canon groups is using them to ask about DoF with FF vs Crop. I took these because I was curious myself. What if suppose a 30mm f1.4 @f2 (Sigma, I no longer have) on a crop body vs 50mm f1.4 @f2 on a FF?
See this discussion:

if I remember correctly, these were taken with JPEG straight from memory cards with no PP
And it should be noted that the 30mm on a APS-C is more like 45mm equivalent... so not quite 50mm
Sony a900 FF with 50mm f1.4 @f2

Sony a550 APS-C with 30mm f1.4 @f2

yep, you would see a difference in DOF between FF and crop with the same settings. good test confirmation.
btw, 5D+17-40 and 7D+24-70 is an amazing walk-around combo. add the GF1+20 1.7 into the mix for fast lens needs and you're golden.

a900 (FF) with my CZ16-35
a77 (APS-C) with my Sigma 24-70
Guy I know wants to sell his D3S for $4500. It has around 65k on the shutter. I know there was talk about the going price somewhere but I can't find it. I recall seeing between 2200 and 2700? Is that right?
