^Getting a 10% fuel mileage improvement from just the listed "imprvements" doesn't seem plausible. They either lowballed the current gen numbers or something else changed. The marketing guys must have been hammering the engineers to get the numbers close to the Sonata. You have to wonder if all it took are those changes to have such an increase in mileage why didn't they do it sooner?

hail to the victors
many people are averaging 35mpg right now on sonata board. and edmunds long term avg was 35mpg on their first tank. basically most of drivers are figuring out how to get over 35mpg. testers got a brand spankin new car which hasn't even broken in.
also this dude hypermiled sonata for 66mpg. no fluke. he destroyed his previous record with other small compact car.(forgot, which model it was)

2011 Hyundai Sonata “Challenge” - One day, 1,000 miles and just one tank of gas… if you read the whole thread, he could've gotten over 1300 mile in one tank!! this is very big deal for hypemilers.
EPA City/Highway/Combined: 24/35/29
Wayne all-out advanced techniques: 66.285 or 229% of combined EPA (189% of highway)
MaxxMPG using only basic techniques and some AC: 42.9 (148% of combined EPA)
KittyBoodles using only basic techniques: 44.4 (153% of combined EPA)

I have also achieved 36mpg on my TSX almost 690 mile on a tank with 18inch tires and using paddle shifters. It is not big deal.
what new Accord bring to the table is that it is doing without DI engine/6speed Auto.

Terrible. They found a way to make it WORSE?!
What in the fuck are you doing Honda? Man oh man. Hyundai, Ford, and even GM are about ready to eat your lunch and I suspect they will very soon (it's already begun).

the sedan's rear end is horrible. i used to complain about the empty space back there, but the additional of the horizontal pieces looked so tacked-on last minute.
it's not even aligned with the old taillights, which is at a slight angle going down in the center of the trunk.

Sweet, slap a Pontiac badge on that coupe and call it a day.
Seriously, though. Honda must be recruiting designers from failed US auto companies. That coupe looks utterly atrocious. It screams American car.
Also, the fake LED-imitation taillights (stupid reflector trick) on the sedan are very lame.
This whole MMC basically just took a horrible car and made it even worse. God, what ugly ass boats. Oh well. On the bright side Honda can expand their fleet sales by selling that trashy coupe to rental companies. It definitely looks like a rental car.

Im really thinking honda designers are blind?
#2501
Honda just isn't placing a priority on style and wants something basic that basically "will do". This is the product of that thinking.
The opposite happened with the 2011 Sonata-Optima, 2010 Fusion (which is still a LITTLE bland to me), 2009 6, and 2008 Malibu, to name a few recent attempts.

Well, this is just a mid-cycle refresh so they can't really do much. I'm just hoping that the next-gen Accord will be desirable again, but the current version is just hopeless.

Yea but usually with a MMC they improve.
They seem to have gone back a few steps.

This kinda reminds me a bit like Apple ... in the early-90s, they were so more interested in profits (rather than revolutionize / lead the industry) they kicked out Jobs ... and almost went bankrupt in the mid/late 90s ... (not to say Honda will go bankrupt ... but they are losing their focus)
What Honda needs is someone to remember what their founder did to make Honda so successful -- design fun cars and make them fuel efficient. Other than an Accord coupe (prior to the MMC update), there's really nothing in the Honda/Acura line-up that I would actually go into the dealership to test drive.

I can't believe they didn't introduce a V8 or a V10 into the Accord line up....where's the 10-speed auto? No Ottoman seats as an option? Lame. What about RWD option? No again? Fine, but what about SH-AWD? No? FAIL! What? Only 23/34mpg? Come on, even the Sonata with new 6AT and DI and new engine and new tech can do 22/35mpg.

Yes, this "supposingly MMC updated" Accord rear end is exactly the same as that of the current-generation Honda Accord all over Asia.
Honda just swaps out the Asian Accord trunk piece into the North American Honda Accord.
I wonder if Honda would also, in return, swap out the NA Accord trunk into the Asian Accord too, and then call both MMC update <- cheap !!!!!

Three Wheelin'
EPIC FAIL
I understand it's the Asian Accord trunk, but to our U.S. eyes, it looks like the 2010 with some Pep Boys reflector strips on the rear. Honda is channeling the ghosts of GM's past with some of these design decisions.

Our 2011 Hyundai Sonata passed the 1,000-mile mark this weekend. As it reached the dregs of a tank of gas, you can see we were averaging 24.1 mpg, according to the Sonata's trip computer. EPA estimates for this car are 22 city/35 highway/26 combined.
