Funny you mention that. I remember when the first Lexus IS came to North America. LOL…everyone wanted those taillights on their cars. Heck, even after market makers of taillights were ripping off the Lexus IS tail lamps style.
Today, Lexus have their own distinctive style. The current Lexus IS is a gem and stand out from the crowd. Just a matter of time before everyone rips of their grills.
KIA/Hyundai hired most of Audi design department and it shows.

the best thing about the looks is the part that made me get into the last gen IS -- the fastback c-pillar, accompanied by the beltline cut and the crook in the window.
....so in summary, i like the part that copies a 2007 design.

about distinctive styling, i think a very few cars have that...BMW with the classic angel eyes AND grille....Audi with the LEDS (well not distinctive anymore LOL).....
I am not a huge huge fan of the Lexus's newly adopted grille, but I would rock that before I rock a stupid beak

YO dude...2008 called....they want their shit BACK !!!
I would agree with you 5-6 years back...hyundai is targeting all the sections very very well...
you can talk about Mercedes and BMW all you want, but they dont have good reputation either...look up reviews and you will see nothing looses car value like a german car...the minute its out of warranty, you pocket is out of cash

I'm always suspicious of folks who cross a car off their shopping list without even driving one for comparisons sake. Throwing the MKZ in the mix just makes you sound silly. Seriously, have you driven one?
Hypothetically speaking, you are in the market for an AWD "red carpet athlete", which one do you buy in 2014 staying under $45 gizzle?

Why would I drive a TLX when I don't like the way it looks? It's an Acura ES350 from what I can tell. Maybe that will sell more cars. If so, then it's the smart move.
Frankly, I'm not overly enamored with any of these cars. I think they're all too expensive.
The TLX may turn out to be a plain brown bag over a supermodel. In which case, I'd have to decide if that was worth it every time I looked at it. However, Acura has not built a car that I lusted after for more than a decade now. So for Acura to get ME into their dealership, they have to come out with something closer to the TLX Concept than what I saw on Autoblog yesterday.
And as I said there are about eight other cars in the $40K-50K range that are good enough to appeal to someone instead of the TLX. That is not a situation where I would say "eh" is good enough.
This, is IMO "eh":

Never driven one so only going by what I heard and read. The 4th Gen TL was a pretty good sports sedan. Especially with the MT. I can't see how the TLX with that power train wouldn't be even better?

Not sure what you found so offensive about my post. I agreed that the Legend was a fine car for its day, but hardly represents the pinnacle of automotive design. If you don't care for my opinions, please put me on ignore, trust me I won't be offended.
For the record I think the BRZ is a nice car, just sorta plain looking and underpowered.

I don't feel the need to "lust" after my daily driver, it needs to be safe, reliable, have a decent stereo and have a little edge to it when desired, which is exactly what I have in my 6MT.

Well then spare us the melodrama. We're talking about mid-priced near lux commuters, not track day or supercars. For its price, I suspect the next TLX will be a fine all around commuter and sporty enough compared to its competitors, if not one of the sportiest under 45k.

Never claimed to be arbiter, don't be so sensitive. But why are you dogging a car you haven't even driven yet? Yeah, so what they toned down the styling of the show car - that was pretty much expected.
We've only seen poor quality pictures.
Let's see the car in the flesh.
Let's actually drive the car for real.
And then let's make a judgement.

The concept looked pretty damn good. The leaked production version looks vanillarized just like other Acura cars.
Hope that's not the final version.

And I'm not picking on you or trying to make it personal, I just get the sense (wrongly perhaps) that the bimmerzine crowd will never be satisfied with an Acura product, they enjoy flashing their badge too much.

BTW, prior to my M5, I (and my wife) had owned only Honda and Acura vehicles since 1993; six, in all (One Integra, three Accords, a Pilot, and a TL). I wanted this company to keep me in the fold as a customer and they let me down. I'm not alone.

It didnt stop my dad who was set on another 5 series to go look at it when i told him about it. He drove off the lot in a new genesis (for about 20k less with the same options) and couldnt be happier. 150k trouble, rattle free miles. He is waiting till the new one comes out till he replaces his.

Itz JDM y0!
Well, there's no question Hyundai has used reverse-engineering to its advantage over the years. But it's also probably hard to argue against the notion that most of the manufacturers do a fair amount of "borrowing" from each other in this day and age of extreme price competitiveness.
I don't see the Genesis stealing any more from its competitors than they do each other at this point.

I get what your saying, but everytime I see the new Genesis that's all that comes to my mind. I feel that they could be a bit more orginal/subtle instead of blatantly ripping off other designs. Hell, I'm only 16 and have only seen like 2 pictures of the car and I was able to deduce those things in a matter of seconds. No doubt Hyundai has made great strides and 99% of people that buy this car will not care about their design ripping. I just hope the Genesis Coupe looks nothing like the new sedan because I love the coupe. I would take it over a 370Z or 5.0 any and everyday. I'm more excited to see what Kia brings to the table though, I like their designs (Sorento, Optima etc..) more then Hyundais.
Hyundai have been copying other brands' design cues and producing cars that actually look good. That's all it matters. Every other brand takes the cues from other brands all the time. It's nothing new.
If a company can't build something that look great on its own, they should stop being stubborn bitches and at least try to copy others to make it right.
Who cares about being "original" when it looks like complete beak shit?

Well, you did PAY MONEY for a 2010 TL. I should have expected you to call the Legend "meh" and the BRZ a "plain looking" car. But that's like dating the fattest chick around and telling all your buddies how anorexic all the other girls are... keep dreaming buddy.

To be honest, I'd rather want Acura to actually rip other designs and make good looking cars than trying to come up with their "original" design and keep making effed up looking cars.

Honda has fucked up it's it-house 5-speed auto tranny, and also it's in-house 3.7L-V6 motor.
The 1st generation 5-speed auto box will self destruct without warning, and the 3.7L-V6 is an engine oil burner.
No wonder Honda has no choice but to seek outsider help in the upcoming 7/8/9-speed auto trannies.

Well to be fair, most other manufacturers do this as well. I'd prefer they stay competitive and buy ZF transmissions (which I've heard good things about), than waste resources on transmissions (and not stay competitive) when they could be using them in better places.

As far as I know, Honda is only sourcing the 9AT from ZF. the 7-DCT and 8-DCT are still in-house designs.
With that said, to be fair, almost all manufacturers need to out source their engineering programs....lol....BMW needs to get someone to do their turbochargers, water pumps. Most companies with DI engines need to get someone to come in to eliminate carbon deposit. Hyundai needs to out source their engines as they don't know how to test EPA ratings correctly. Audi and Mazda with their oil consumption issues...and the list goes on and on....

I don't think it's an issue that they're outsourcing transmissions.
I didn't realize how big the 4G TL is/was ... It's the same length as a Genesis sedan. Even though the TLX is about 4" shorter it'll still be 5-12" longer than just about anything else from BMW, Lexus, Volvo, etc ...

The main point is to keep the Acura "Advance" image hyped up and to dazzle potential Acura buyers with latest technologies, without any break or delay; regardless of whether the technologies are build in-house or are outsourced.

I believe most buyers won't mind even if Honda outsources every major components on it's vehicles, as long as Acura products are constantly updated with the latest technologies that are available on the auto market or at least available on current competitor models.
