2021/2022 TLX versus the Competition

I know it's not quite Apples to Apples, but:
Come on aftermarket. The Z has been out less than a year. I get that they had the Q50 development that made things easier, but they were able to crack the ECU and develop a turbo to get this thing to 600+wHP. I'm not expecting the TLX-S to make anywhere even within 100wHP of that (transmission's limit is probably somewhere in the mid-400wHP range), but all there is after two years are exhaust and a tune that almost get the car as fast as a stock S4.
I really hope someone does a turbo swap on this powerplant. Though, the fact that Hondata won't even bother with this engine is a huge dagger into aftermarket development.

Agree on the absence of Hondata affecting the tune scene for the Type S. The KTuner basemap still appears to have some kinks that need to be ironed out but perhaps once that gets sorted out the other tuners will get more involved.

I saw one the other day and they look really good in person! It’s great that manufacturers are putting an emphasis on developing performance-oriented trims/cars like GR, N, Type S, Z, Blackwing.

For the money though, if I wanted a 2dr coupe that was RWD, I'd probably go with the upcoming Mustang GT. Throw a supercharger on there on a weekend and get to ~600rwHP.
The TLX-S really needs a bigger turbo to make some good power. They're able to get 420wHP+ with a FBO + Pure turbo on the K20 on pump gas ... with a turbo swap, the J30 should easily be able to get into the mid-upper 400wHP range without sacrificing much low end.

There might be some that will cross shop the TLX with the all-new 5-series. The dimensions are closer to the TLX than the 3-series. The 530i RWD has a similar MSRP to the TLX Type S. The 530i won't be as good performance-wise but will have a larger and more modern cabin. Pictured is the top-line i5 M60 xDriver (MSRP $85k)...

And I thought my CTR’s fake vents were overkill! I guess it helps with manufacturing costs to keep ICE and EV outside to be identical but slapping on a piece of plastic where vents would be but at least it look decent.
Outside is 🤮 but I like the ambience that the interior has. It looks upscale.

And we all thought Chris Bangle's designs were bad. I've actually grown to somewhat like the M3/M4's grille. The one on the regular 4-series I still hate though, along with everything else they use it on (ie: the XM). The new 7-series is terrible. This 5-series is almost as bad. I don't mind the front of the 3-series too much, but the rear end is awful. If they transfer it to the M3 for the LCI, I may just bite the bullet and buy a current style M3.
I like the new X5 though. I was hoping the design language would transfer over from there, but my God they massacred the poor car. The X5 also retains the N63 V8 in the M60i but it gets killed off for the 5-series in place of an EV. There are less and less cars that I desire from BMW. All the more reason I wish Acura would do better (or at least the aftermarket).

I cannot believe these designs are approved...Acura designers should win the awards for their work! And Genesis designers should be compensated 3X. This BMW design simply makes you

100%! this generation was beautiful...the new ones are just horrible. I am not sure what BMW is trying to achieve. MB is brining TikTok and Angry Birds and BMW these horrible looks...German Engineering was something to discuss and now we will discuss German Designing instead. The "BEST" in the world hahahah!

Oh my goodness, BMW just getting uglier and uglier on the outside and getting worse on the inside with just sticking those tablets and removing physical controls. Bad designs can and will kill the brand. Real opportunity for Audi to take some market share away with next gen A4/5 Q5 just don't screw it up.

I was in NYC this past weekend and I was very curious to check cars and compare to my city. My observation:
Acura brand:
- MDX!!! The King...honestly, I saw so many MDX that couldn't believe it. Now I see why Acura made it its flagship and focuses on MDX more than any other car.
- RDX: I saw more RDX than Q5 or GLC but almost same number as NX & X3.
- TLX & Integra are present but as sales numbers show us, they are far from MDX and RDX. The sedan market is dying. I saw one Red TYPE S next to Brooklyn Bridge. I was expecting more TLX tbh.
Other brands highlights:
- BMW really dominates compared to other Germans and luxury brands.
- I saw 4 Genesis in 3 days! Shocking! I see more Genesis in Montreal on a daily basis!
This is just my observation and could be off but just thought to share with you guys!

I read once, brand loyalty lasts about 10 years. Believe it or not, I am very much in that 10 year window for most of my purchases except car brand. I have been with Honda/Acura brand for almost 20 years. I would say 80% of my family owns Hondas and Acuras We have been very lucky as our experiences have been nothing but the best with this brand. Can't complain! It's good to try other brands and experience something new but I guess that time hasn't come yet for me.

I test drove many other cars in this segment and without bias, TLX is the best package. Genesis G70 is good as well, but there are two major issues with it.
1. Very small trunk
2. Re-sale value, since I buy my cars and keep them for 7-10 years. I cannot accept a massive depreciation with Genesis.

I live in Northern Virginia, just outside Washington DC in a fairly urbanized county with a population of about 1.2 million, nearly double DC's population. It's an affluent area, so there are many luxury brands.
The mixture has changed a lot since I bought my TL Type S in 2007. Back then Acura's were very common, along with Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes, Jaguars and Lexus. Today I see many more BMW and Audi sedans than Acuras, but Acura is still very common in the form of the MDX which seems to be holding is own against a flood of different BMW SUVs (7 different models!)
Jags and Volvos, once popular are virtually extinct. I'm pretty sure I have seen as many Maseratis as TLX Type S driving around. The big surprise to me is the number of Teslas. They are everywhere.

Making the new 5 series bigger as well as uglier, and with the new panel and controls, is not going to help sales. Many BMW owners already dislike the large screens of the G30, I can't imagine them liking the new one.

NYC has to be the worst city in the US for realistic auto comparing. Many New Yorkers don't even have a drivers license and the most popular car is a taxicab.

I don't really agree with you about NYC. I saw many, many luxury cars beside taxis. Yes, may be NYC is not the best place to compare but I was amazed to the see the number of BMWs compared to other brands. I saw more Acuras than Infinit, Genesis, Volvo and even Audi. Anyway, it was just an obersavtion and I did not count them

Of the 4G MDXs within a square mile of my house there are: two Type S, 4 A Specs, 2 Advanced and my own Tech.
As far as Genesis goes around here (Somerset County NJ), it's a relatively uncommon sight. However, BMW, Audi and MB are by far the most common luxury brands you'll here.
On the flip side, I've traveled to visit inlaws in the Cincy area and rarely see ANY Honda products on the roads.....despite the fact that Honda's HQ is nearby. Have the feeling that the average Ohio resident would rather have a Chevy Cruze than a Honda Civic.

Wow! Fantastic! Looks like I am heading there as well I have a 2020 MDX, which is purchased and we have no plans to change it. Our perfect family car. My next purchase will be TLX or TLX TYPE S (90% sure it will be TYPE S). Waiting on my Mazda lease and my daughter to get one year older so I switch her to booster seat

After the 1989 Accord, the wife moved to a 2000 Subaru Outback since Honda no longer offered a wagon. We are now on our second Outback and have had very good luck with them as well.
I crossed shopped the Audi A4, G70, IS350 and the Q50 before I purchased the TLX. Actually I even passed on the 1st gen TLX at that time and glad I waited for the 2nd gen. To me the best looking car of the group.
As you can see, we keep our cars for a long time as well.

For EVs, in addition to the ubiquitous Teslas, I'm starting to see a trickling of Lucid Airs, no doubt influenced by the presence of a dedicated showroom in a nearby mall.

+1 that Genesis sightings are rare. On occasion, I will see the older "Genesis Coupe" from back when Genesis was a car model and not a brand (they made you pay extra for the winged logo to replace the Hyundai badging, though it may have been standard on the coupe). I hear they're opening up a standalone Genesis dealer in Wayne so sightings should pick up once the stigma of shopping and getting service w/Hyundai customers is removed. I'm sure the same will be similar for Somerset!

I've been in a '23 A Spec FWD TLX for the last day or so while our Integra is in for service. About 900 miles on the car, so effectively new.
Platinum while/black combo is very attractive. Getting close to one of these cars in person really impresses what a nice looking, well-styled car this is.
The fit and finish are all well done. ELS is great, as expected. The infotainment is a little hard to adjust to from the touch screen in the Integra, but it works fine if you take a minute to learn and work with it. My only complaint is the screen is small and far away (compared to the Integra) and the font is small for my over-40 eyes. But again, it all works well and sounds great.
Seats are very comfortable and widely adjustable. Seat material is nice and premium looking/feeling.
The car is surprisingly quick in Sport mode. No hesitation, right now acceleration, and it sounds pretty good for a four banger turbo. It's not SH-AWD, but I'd like to try one of those given how good this car feels. Steering is fast and has feeling and the car handles pretty well for a larger FWD sedan. It's not a high performance car -- that's the Type S's slot -- but it's fun and satisfying to drive.
The only real negative I have is the back seat room. Reminds me of my old Legend Coupe. You could fit adults in back, and they'd be comfortable, but the front seats would be up so far you felt like you're eating your knees.
Overall, the TLX is a very nice car, certainly competitive in its class for someone who doesn't want a soft, Lexus-like ride, but still wants luxury fit and finish, materials and features. I've enjoyed driving it, but will be glad to get the 6MT back in my right hand in the Integra.

Great little review and summary! I test drove the TLX -A-SPEC a long time ago and I loved the car. My only issue with the car was the material used on the door panels. I found them very inconsistent and my 2010 TL has better door panels
I think the TLX is unappreciated but it's not just the TLX, all the sedan market.

The quality of the material is very subpar even compared to older Acura’s. There should be no reason why Acura can’t match Nissan in material quality of the upper door panel.

This is the same problem I have with TLX and MDX. It’s even more of a problem in the TLX because of the amount of space the grainy soft-touch upper sections takes up on the door panel.
The quality of the material is very subpar even compared to older Acura’s. There should be no reason why Acura can’t match Nissan in material quality of the upper door panel.

That and the thinner, less plush carpet were the first things I noticed when I brought home my 2010 TL. Of course, I was coming from an 18 year old Legend that had leather on a great portion of the doors and no exposed hard plastic. Carpeting in that car was plush enough for a luxury home! We've paid a price -- across all brands -- for cost reduction and lighter weight materials. And yet cars still get heavier each year (and more expensive)!
