TLX in the wild... and new pics

Acura TLX 2.4 Tech 9-2014
I just do not see these similarities you see. The TLX has PAWS, looks completely different, has premium interior, acoustic glass, more power, different autos, SHAWD in the 3.5, split fold seats, IDS, longer warranty, etc.... I do not see people complaining the Lexus ES is a gussied up Camry, the Audi A3/a4 gussied up Jetta/Passat...etc...
Of course they will have some similarities, it is the same damn company, this is how it works, this is why you get to leverage those feature and cost benefits. If Acura was a stand alone company this TLX would be nowhere close to be costing this much.
Until we can drive one, play with the interior, etc.. then you can judge whether it feels like an Accord. I like the Accord a lot but this ain't no Accord from everything I have seen.
I predict it will do extremely well in the marketplace and the more I see I like.

As others have mentioned, acura has a basic problem. The 4cyl tlx is too much like an accord for 8K more. Perhaps the accord is too good at its price point. The spread between the lowest priced accord and the top of the line accord is about 10k, but the cars look almost the same. The spread between the tlx bottom and top is about 18k, but the real problem is that the bottom starts too low. On the street, you will see mostly 4cyl tlx's that were purchased for about 30k. If you purchase the top line tlx for 45k, you will have a better car (in terms of features,) but you will have very little, if any brand "cache."
Base TLX starts at $30,000, and a comparable Accord is $28,000 (Non NAV EX-L CVT) For $2,000 the Acura gives you the following:
-4WS
-LED headlights standard
-8 speed DCT (versus inferior CVT)
-It has a re-tuned engine (It's not just a carry over, revs higher etc)
- It'll be quieter.
- Faster
- Nicer quality materials. I've sat in the TLX and it has vastly superior materials, right inline with its luxury competition.
- Acura service
- Longer warranty
Acura started the price of the TLX too low? You obviously don't understand what the market wants.
I mentioned that acura should be more like lexus, how about being more like infiniti? Infiniti is copying the lexus playbook by offering unique offerings at a lower price point. The have unique models, but they are smart because they don't offer a nissan rebadge in the infiniti line. All of their sedans are rwd with an available v8 and awd. I don't particularly like the infiniti interior and find their seats very uncomfortable, but their idea is dead on.
In the lower price tiers, honda has by far the best offerings, and the most popular cars, in virtually all of their offerings. If they copy the infiniti sedan play book, they can easily become the "affordable" alternative to lexus.

So Honda/Acura customers have a choice. If you want luxury, go with TLX. If you want interior space go with Accord.
If you want luxury and space then, I guess paying the additional $$$ for the RLX is the only choice. Or look at the other brands.

^^ I haven't compared the specs, but we own an Accord and I have spent a bit of time looking at the RLX, and I'm pretty sure the RLX has more room than our Accord. At least it certainly "feels" that way.

However based purely on numbers the 2014 RLX has 117.0 cu ft of total interior volume. Passenger volume is 102.1 cu ft and cargo volume is 14.9 cu ft.
The 2014 Accord has 119 cu ft total interior volume. Passenger volume is 103.2 cu ft and cargo volume is 15.2 cu ft. Meaning the Accord actually has BOTH more passenger AND more cargo volume than the RLX by a slight amount.
Interestingly someone asked how the 2015 TLX compares to the 2014 Civic. In this comparison, even the Civic is slightly larger for the passengers than the 2015 TLX at 94.6 cu ft vs 93.3 cu ft.
Thankfully, the TLX is better for cargo volume at 13.2/14.3 versus 12.5 for the Civic.
Again how one actually "perceives" the interior space may vary with how the space is distributed and designed.

Just wait until the thing is released and sit in it. Then decide if there's enough room.

Well, there is certainly a difference between how a cabin "feels" and the raw numbers due to multiple factors such as the actual layout and utilization of space as well as the windows and outward sight lines.

would be nice if one day Acura comes out with a car where all the focus is on beautiful design, performance, handling, etc..

If they don't figure things out soon I'm afraid for the future of the brand.

I traded my much beloved RL SH-AWD for an Audi A8L V8 Premium. I didn't find the 2014 RLX PAWS to be a great improvement over my RL SH-AWD and the RLX Hybrid SH-AWD is still vaporware. Plus none of my local dealers had any RLX at all to sell in their inventory.
My wife traded her much despised G35x AWD for a 2015 Genesis 3.8 Tech.
These two new additions join our remaining Acuras, an MDX, NSX-T, and 2nd generation Legend sedan in our garage.
The two new cars are our first foray into german and korean brands although we have had family members who own them and have been very happy.

None of this is a bad thing IMO and it's not being said as a knock, quite the opposite actually but the different perceptions and perhaps misconceptions surrounding these brands vs their parent company is curious. Another example, up until a few years ago there was no Lexus in Japan either, almost everything was a Toyota rebadge and many models shared platforms as well. However they have shaken that criticism in recent years even among the models where none of that has actually changed.
Neither of which is totally different than Honda/Acura, that's not what I'm getting at, as the NSX and RL/Legend were historically Honda rebadges, as well as the TSX and Integra/RSX and maybe another I am missing but today they are all exclusive Acura models. If they become available elsewhere as a Honda, they are Acura first and foremost except leftover TSX models and maybe a few remaining RL's which are effectively dead models.
So I think what everyone is really calling for, whether they realize it or not, is not any additional distinction or what it is labelled or badged as, because they are basically the same companies in almost a lot of other cases too and all have common designers, themes, philosophies and concepts, etc, so there is always going to be similarities.
It's not really that they are any less distinct than Lexus/Toyota or Nissan/Infiniti. That's marketing and perception, again all of Acura's new line is unique to Acura, not a rebadge from somewhere else, yet because they don't have an extra exclusive platform or two or a single V8 or RWD, that shapes peoples' beliefs or impacts media and marketing, which both then cycle off of each other, it's somehow so much different.
Not to excuse anything, Acura has it's own faults and often fails to offer to the market what the market actually calls for even if it's just to offer a halo trim or model and sell the less equipped versions or entry models but that works, let's be honest. Another example, SH-AWD and a lack of V8 option didn't do enough to help the RL alongside it's competition or really crack into that market for today, yet instead of working from there, they go backwards and offer it as a FWD instead and delays on the hybrid instead approach but all of this and more is a discussion for another day.
Back to the point, as far as platform use and sharing, it's not really rebadging (at least IMO) because a lot of reconfiguration can go into it and Acura is arguably the best at it. FWIW, MB is incorporating a new FWD platform for a few models and plans on using the same platform although stretched accordingly for the C, E, and S. This is already underway and strangely we won't ever hear anything about it. Likewise, BMW is a few years delayed in that approach but are going that way as well. Infiniti and Lexus do it as already discussed and in some ways arguably worse but it seems they all get free passes or a little less crap for it at least (particularly at Infiniti and Lexus) or will get them while, in many respects Acura is ahead of the game in that department. Their faults are mostly their own, has little to do with platforms and the relation to Honda.

Hope it looks nice in person. I love unique colored cars. Don't know how I ended up buying a silver ZDX. Probably because the color selection on the 2013's were limited and the glass roof looks better with the silver. But I wish it came in a color like Black Copper Pearl.

About half of Infiniti is a Nissan rebadge, FWIW. Those same products are Nissans in Japan, just rebadged "Infiniti" here with minor changes and some exclusive trims. However, there are many Infiniti exclusive products as a whole too, mostly their SUV and some crossover models but alas, there really is no such thing as Infiniti in Japan where most are designed, engineered, and built and come from. Even of those exclusively built Infiniti models, many still share a platform also used in a Nissan model or counterpart, just like Acura.

Acura really should copy lexus, and make unique platforms for their higher end sedan cars. Lexus has the es (camry) for the lower market and then 3 unique platforms for the upper market (small, medium, large- is, gs, ls.) Acura has 3 models (ilx- civic, tlx-accord, rlx-accord xl.) That is why they are in the position they are. Acura can easily be the affordable alternative to lexus, but the honda lineup continously undermines that effort.

Infiniti is actually moving away from this to be able to globalize the brand. Therir probelm has been they have not really pushed Infiniti into Japan much and now will have to step up the effort in Japan. Also Infiniti I think does a better job of re-skinning the SUVs to not look much like the Nissan version. In the US the sedans have no Nissan equivalent in the US.

Not sure if you heard about this or not yet, but I found it very interesting... Do you remember the article about Infiniti that I posted regarding the brands complete overhaul strategy led by their chief de Nysschen who came from Audi two years ago? Well today they announced that he's leaving Infiniti and going to Cadillac. They still have all plans on target for Infiniti for major changes by 2017... and I expect a complete overhaul of the Cadillac brand is coming since de Nysschen is now onboard with them. Why couldn't we/Acura have gotten him! lol

I read the full automotive news article yesterday and I think he realized that the goal of 500,000 by 2020 might be a bit of a stretch. At least he was successful in renaming all the cars at Infiniti. Imagine if he came to Acura, we'd have another round of model renaming....

If that's what it takes... he apparently knows what he's doing. He's the one that put Audi on the map, increasing global sales by 42%... and he put the strategies in place at Infiniti which I believe will take them far long term. They have new models coming by 2017 (and Nissan and Daimer are investing $1.36 billion as you read in the article)... and who knows they might meet the 500k global target by 2020 if the plan works... and then they plan to have two more halo models above their current flagship by 2020. They're trying, which is commendable.

Silver used to be one of my favorite colors. Then I started to feel like it looks boring and suits only certain types of cars. I tend to go for more rich looking colors or just plain black.
I wholeheartedly agree with most of the consensus. This is different now. Silver is a winner for the TLX. Best color. It just goes well with the grille and the jewel eyes.
btw that is the ONLY angle those ugly wheels look good at. It's going to be interesting to see how creative AZiners will get with aftermarket 19"s.

Exactly. Were I to lease (I wouldn't buy) a TLX, the first and primary change I'd make is to the wheels. Acura is just incapable of choosing decent stock wheels.
