System Update
Mine is not nearly as elaborate as some of the above installs... but the components are quality, and the sound is amazing.
Rockford Fosgate T400-4 (4-Channel Amp) - driving Focal 165V component speakers (front doors and rear deck).
Rockford-Fosgate T400-2 (2-Channel Amp) - bridged mono driving two JL Audio W3 Series Subs (yes - they're 6.5" subs!)
Center channel is an Infiniti Kappa 3.5" and is running off the stock amp.
Stock sub is disconnected.
I built the sub enclosure out of MDF and fiberglass, so it fits perfectly into the back corner. It is sized properly for the two subs.
I built a false platform over top of the Navi DVD Player. It is hinged, so that I can still easily access the DVD player.
I also built a little storage cubby beside it, which is actually a separate piece, and is velcro'd to the trunk floor

I did the above installation about 3 years ago, and it has sounded amazing ever since... except I blew one of the 6" JL subs. I was also using Stinger LOC's, and I suspect one of them was starting to fail, because every once in a while I got a bit of distortion through the front tweeters.
With those two issues nagging at me (since the summer), I finally decided to do something about it, and bought myself a couple Christmas gifts:
I got a Rockford-Fosgate 3Sixty.1 on Craigslist for $100.00
I realize that the Version 2 is far superior, but for a hundred bucks I couldn't refuse!
I was also doing a lot of research, with regards to sub replacement...
After much thought, it really came down to two decididng factors:
1. I'm 42 years old, with 2 kids, and I use my car as a daily driver, as well as for my job. So the reality is that, I don't want a big sub box taking up my whole trunk.
2. I like to build my systems to be as 'stealth' as possible. I like to hear the sound quality, more than see it.
I decided to venture away from the 'full boom' of a real sub, and experiment with replacing the factory 8" unit, and see what I could get with a free air mid-bass sound. Unfortunately, I got busy with the project, and put it all back together, before I took any pictures. But I bought an Image Dynamics ID8VB4 sub. It is a subwoofer, designed to be in an enclosure, but it's also had a lot of success in a free air environment. I completely Dynamatted the rear deck (top and bottom), and dropped the sub into the stock hole. It fit like a glove!
Let me be the first to say that after a few hours of tuning the 3.Sixty, and mounting foam to strategic points on the rear deck shelf (to get rid of rattle), the free air sub in the stock location sounds amazing! It performs much better than my two 6" JL subs did in an enclosure. It's NOT ground shaking sub bass, but it IS very good bass fill... you can feel it... it pounds.
The 3.Sixty is a wicked unit. I would recommend it to everyone who is considering doing a stereo / amp upgrade. As I mentioned before, my stereo sounded pretty good when I did the original upgrade, but the 3.Sixty has brought it to a whole new level. I am hearing sounds and tones that I never heard before, and am truly impressed!
I also ripped the original trunk layout apart. My goal is to build a 'stealth' system, so with all speakers in the factory locations, I wanted to get the amps out of my face. I built a backboard against the rear seats, and mounted the amps to that. Then I built a false front out of pegboard (the holes in the pegboard help for air movement/cooling). The install is clean, and I have a FULL trunk.
So, with it all together, I am now running the following components:
Stock head unit
Rockford-Fosgate 3.Sixty digital sound processor
Infinity Kappa 3" center driver
Focal Polyglass 165VB components for the front doors and rear deck
Image Dynamics ID8 subwoofer
Rockford-Fosgate T400-4 amplifier - driving the Focals
Rockford-Fosgate T400-2 amplifier - driving the Sub
Stock amplifier - driving the 3" Infinty center channel

I keep forgetting to post pics of my bandpass setup. Not much to see, just a port between the seats, subs not visible at all, and an ugly box in the trunk. It looks like someone gave a 5yr old a saw, some wood, and some screws but it sure does sound good.

I have a system for great sound at high volumes. My box is uncarpeted, no amp rack, no neon lights, etc. But it sounds better than just about everything out there. I could care less about impressing people with the looks of an audio system. I've never understood that.

I'll throw up pics of my system I just purchased. Cheapo system consisting of 2 Kicker 10" CVR's in a custom ported box (tuned to damn high though!...prolly around 45hz) and a Kicker 400.1. Got it all w/ a true 4ga. amp kit for $200. Here's my question to everyone....
Is it just me/my system or are these TL's damn near sound proof?? My subs sound MUCH louder when I open the trunk rather than sitting in the drivers seat. They punch hard, etc but I hardly feel any "punch" in my seat. I know what your thinking, it's probably a problem with the box (tuned to high so its boomy, etc). It's a massive box...looks close to TommyStyles box at the top of the page except its about 3-4" longer on either side and not carpeted. Like I said, its a big ass box for 2 10's and it seems to be coming apart slightly as I can feel air creeping through holes where the previous owner mounted the subs and amp, which I know is killing the sound. I might have gotten spoiled with my setup in my old truck which consisted of 2 Digital Design 3510e's, Power Acoustik a3000db, 3.2cu.ft ported box tuned to 34hz. Granted it was a regular cab and they subs/power was pretty ridiculous for that small of a space but they hit me HARD!!..very hard. Scared the shit out of a few people haha.
Anyways!, I just wanted to ask you guys if you all are experiencing the same kind of thing. It gets a little better with backseat armrest down (expected) but still much quieter than most cars I've been in with systems. I guess that's a good thing, being that the TL is well built and insulated...sucks for this occasion though. I've entertained the thought of buying/building a new box and seeing if it helps though I can't find any decent plans for a box for 2 10's, tuned to around 30-35hz. cheers!

Well as it turns out my buddy owns a custom audio shop here in Lafayette, and received some NASTY American Bass 12'' 3500W peak 28hz subs. I happened to have swiped one off of him

Anyone want to see an IB W6? It's about the most boring system in here. Nothing to look at but a sub and a couple of wires. I could probably get the simplest system award.

My curiosity has been sparked since you started talking about it (around Christmas time)...

I prefer Aux 1 over the ipod because i have over 25 gigs of music and the scrolling is much faster this way. Plus i get album art and i can still change tracks via the stereo and the steering wheel. by the way sorry for such large images, i tried to resize them but the didn't seem to want to shrink.

My setup (will be making a ported box soon to replace my sealed)
Tweeter placement (will be bondo-ing it to give it a smooth vertical extension and then will be wrapping in grey vinyl)
Ipod location (modeled after jptl04's much better rendition of this haha)
Trunk
Again, ported enclosure going in soon - will update later

i actually made the ported enclosure already over the weekend - I was initially worried about sacrificing sq over the added bass, but I have to say that my little w3 still hits the lows with a good deal of precision … of course with an added punch though I’m loving it haha (thanks to fourthmeal and eggyhustles for the suggestion in moving over to a ported encl w/ polyfill)
Much to my surprise, I actually haven’t taken up that much more space than I had originally with my sealed enclosure … I used JL recommendations for box dimensions for both, so the ported enclosure only added several inches to the depth of the box. I’ll also be mounting the amps vertically this time with several fans (mainly to cool my pdx … that thing gets warmer than what I’m comfortable with)

The Final install on my Trunk it houses a JL 10"w3v2 sub. Amp is behind the left trunk trim panel. Defiantly not for show, but it is very usable and all the equipment is protected. I have two Children and carry quite abit of stuff and couldn't give up much trunk space.
here is the rest of the install
