Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
I don't remember the 3GS with rumors like this but then again I wasn't in the Apple thread since I was rocking a Treo beyotch.
Maybe since it's a bigger jump from 3GS to 4 as opposed to 3G to 3GS that these rumors are coming out.
Then again the ones reviewed were used for a week with no issues by at least 5 or 6 different publications that I've personally read. Unless those were quadruple tested before being sent to the press.

I did a speedtest by speedtest on my 3GS. Holding it I was like 1.4/256. On my desk 2.2/286.
One annoyance of 4.0. New apps get saved to 2nd page even though first page has folders and open slots. Dragging from page 2 to page 1 is a PITA.

Im sure the dropped coverage thing will be fixed in an update, I was going to get a case / bumper anyways..
Mine is waiting for me at home...Can't wait, will need to go to ATT on Sunday and get the numbers swapped for my wife an me...
Actually, the reviews I've read stated that the 3G->3GS jump was bigger than the 3GS->4.
I don't know if the reception issues are widespread, or if they're real. But if they are, and they are in fact caused by connecting the two bands together at that spot, I'd consider that a fairly big issue. It's exactly how I hold my phone for both browsing and talking, and I'm sure most other people do as well.
I'm sure it will flesh out over the course of the weekend.

This has to be the stupid design flaw I've ever fucking seen. My god! I thought you had people testing these phones out in the wild. I'm at a loss for words right now to express the sheer stupidity of this!

FWIW, Engadget said that their review unit didn't have this problem. So maybe mine won't but honestly I don't even want to open it now.

I guess your right when you're using it for interwebs and games but for phone calls it wouldn't be a problem. While for me, I can't stand holding a phone with my right hand while making a call. And no Apple I won't PAY for one of your bumper accessories to help alleviate a problem with your shitty design.
Waiting here in northbook court mall in Chicago and been waiting for 3 1/2 hours now and no where close, there's two lines one reserved and one unreserved and it's 1/4 ratio, they let in 1 unreserved to 4 reserved at a time this is bullshit

If the bumpers solve the problem, I won't be mad. I'll just request a refund of what I paid for it. Or a credit, I'm not too picky.
I think maybe part of the reason that apple didn't catch the glitch in real world tests was due to the cases they used to disguise them.
Remember the lost unit found at the bar, it was in a case disguising it as a 3GS.

(dont know if that made any sense)
Hmmmmm I find this odd.
I'm not normally a morning person, but I got up to go take a leak, when I decided to drive down to the AT&T store to see if I'd get lucky. I pulled up and there's literally no customers. But a store full of employees. But they tell me that ALL the i4's are for pre-ordered people and that "walk-in" purchase will go on sale Tuesday. The employee however pointed out that there's a demo I can check out if I want. So I figured "why not?".
anyway, the first thing I did was to hold it firmly with my left hand, and sure enough the signal bars started dropping, tho not as fast as in the video. But then again, I WAS at the store where the signal is VERY strong. So maybe had it been elsewhere the bars may drop much faster.
so, one of the first things I did was to go to YouTube. I searched "iPhone 4" and clicked on the very first one, which is a 5 minutes review by CNet. Again, the picture is simply awesome!
Here's where i think it's weird. I wanted to compare the screen (with the same video) with my 3GS. It was taking longer to pull up the video. Of course the picture was crap (in comparison with the i4). But since it was taking so long, I realized that the i4 was on wifi (and mine wasn't). So instead of switching mine to catch their store wifi signal, I decided to turn the demo i4's wifi off and see it in action with 3G. And the weird part was...the video wouldn't pull up! It kept loading and loading, but it never played. I asked the employee if that i4 was activated, and he said: yes.
Who knows what that was about. But I took a couple quick pics with the camera and the pictures were excellent (coming from a cell phone)

I have tried and tried, and I can't recreate the bar-dropping issue with my iphone 4....with either hand.
Btw, I love the phone. The screen, camera, processor and mail app amongst other things are a big improvement over the previous versions IMO .

Hmm, I'm right handed, and hold the phone in my right hand. I've never heard of people using their non-dominate hand to hold a phone.
We also need to remember that the phone was made by humans, humans are not perfect... And while it seems obvious to say "how did they not see this?", QA is a difficult task. I've seen crazy stuff that my software company's QA teams would never think of testing, but after the fact seems stupid they didn't.

It probably too early to say if this be a major problem or not since it isn't widespread yet.... but if it is, my concern is how will they fix it? I'm no expert on cell phone antennas and reception but I'm pretty sure its a hardware issue, in which case I don't know how easy a fix will be. And as we can tell, people are already disgruntled about having to wait an extra week or two....
If it matters, I pick up the phone using whatever hand is closest. I'm not ambidextrous or anything - I do favor my right hand more when I'm using it and I'm right handed.

Multiple people say that using a case fixes it. It's simply a matter of connecting the two antennas.
Can't wait to hear Apple's reasoning to make you spend an additional $30 for it to be usable.

Even though I have two showing up today, and am excited for the upgrade, I am cautious for Apple. I actually decided to sell my AAPL stock and take my 11% off the table. They may need to deal with some class action stuff if its breaking too easy.... But i'm still excited to get mine.
b/c the amount of time for devices to operate correctly is 48-72 hours
not when you purchase.

im still getting one, but waiting till they have a fix (if it is a serious issue).
