Haha yeah it's time consuming taking everything off and wrapping. Such a pita to try and match all the weave from piece to piece.

@Darkness TL looking good. Someone actually hit and scratched my parked car door today luckily no dents..do you think 2000 Grit plus polishing compound and polisher/sealer is good enough to fix scratches? I remember you had a few on yours..

@Sanjay - Looks good! How well did they blend the pearl? The other KBP I detailed had a terrible repaint done on the door. It had easily double the amount of pearl compared to the rest of the car. Did you also replace the front bumper? I saw you yesterday at the intersection of 75st and Argyll while I was turning left.

EdmTSX - Wet sanding is the last resort. It is the most aggressive method of paint correction, removing the most clear coat. Wet sanding OEM paint is risky unless you have a paint thickness gauge. Otherwise you have no idea how much clear coat your're actually working with and it could lead to clear coat failure in the future if you sand away too much of it. It is recommended to start from least aggressive and work your way up. Begin with finer, less abrasive polishes and progress to medium polishes and if needed, compounds. If you do end up using a compound, it is highly recommended to follow up with a finer polishes otherwise the finish won't be perfect. There will most likely still be finer scratches and haziness to the paint. Doing this by hand won't yield the same results as a machine, with the machine producing a better uniform finish.

Also, you can buy these different grades of polishes OTC but your best bet is to get the higher end polishes available online. Doing this on your own properly won't be cheap. Adding up everything will be hundreds of dollars. If you decide to invest in everything, you might as well detail the entire car yourself or seek a local detailer to avoid the work.

Looks like mostly paint transfer unless that is all the way down to the primer. When you run your finger nail over them, does it catch? If it catches, those are very deep.

You can try to clay bar it first and see how much you can get off. If it doesn't budge, here's a few approaches you can take.

Using Menzerna products:

If the marks are still there, use power gloss (compound), you'll need to follow up with a finer polish since this will leave your paint hazy http://www.autoobsessed.com/shop/men...mluvrj8usbdjm6

Or try the Meguiar's combo:

I imagine since you want to try and tackle this on your own, you won't be purchasing a buffer. I only use these hand pads for small, hard to reach areas that I can't get the machine into and don't have experience using it on a larger panel.

It's going to look a bit odd on your car if you only correct the recent damage. From the picture, your paint is heavily swirled and looks like it really needs correction. I'd suggest either doing the entire car on your own, seek a local detailer, or leave it as is.

From the picture you provided, I imagine your paint looks like the right side of this shot. This car took my buddy and I two days of work to correct. It was in for a full interior and exterior. The white tail you see on the left was way too deep to remove, it was down to the primer.

@Vince - Are those palm car polishers pretty useless? And is there a finer polish that you recommend? And that isn't paint transfer..

Hey guys, well the rebuild process for my TL has commenced!
It took a month for the parts and such but I'm just glad she's gonna be back soon!
Only thing that bothers me is the used bumper I bought from a guy on here and its scratched like crazy, which isn't cool.

@EdmTSX - Yeah I don't remember exactly what the owner said but I think he said someone wasn't watching their shopping cart and it skid by his door. Either that or the door got keyed.

The finer polish I recommend was "super finish" or "M205" that I linked above. You could also experiment with micro polish but this stuff is mostly for refining the finish when your looking to bring out gloss. http://www.autoobsessed.com/shop/men...ghg74fhkfoeif0

Yes please don't buy that palm polisher. Those are beyond useless. The only function I see them serving is to spread wax and even so, I prefer to wax by hand.

If you're going to try this by hand, I guarantee your arm will be sore and the paint will most likely look uneven. I'd get a machine, the appropriate backing plate, and pads. Consider this, can you make circles with your hands at 6800 times per minute?

No problem glad to help. If you get the Griot's buffer, it would be easier to get 6 inch pads since it already comes with a 6 inch backing plate. It would be helpful to buy a 3.5 inch backing plate as well to fit 3 inch pads for those hard to reach areas.

Since your nail slightly catches, you'll most likely need a more aggressive polish/compound to remove those defects. Good luck!

If they are down to the primer, then your only choice is to apply spot putty and try to blend it or have the door repainted. For the putty, you'll need some touch up paint and sandpaper meant for wet sanding. You'll need to wet sand the portions you applied putty to so that it blends in with the surrounding area.

Lol forget about the fog light mod. Just get an 07-08 front bumper instead. I like the look of the honeycomb insert behind the front grille and fog light area.

Worked on this the other day in the spirit of taking apart my interior. This piece was a major pita since I had to remove all the little parts and make so many small cuts. The crooked part you see in the middle was later fixed before being put back on. My next item to be wrapped will be the steering wheel trim pieces. Looks like it will require the removal of the steering wheel. Boo!

Has anyone had a hard time taking the strut bar nuts/bolts off? Mine are on so tight..I'm trying to install an Ingalls Engine Torque Damper and the bolts just wont come loose..

Soak the nuts in penetrant and let it sit for 10mins then giver...electric impacts help alot too

I didn't exactly wrap the vents. The piece of vinyl went over top and I used the heat gun to show the indent. I used my knife to make cuts where the vents are and proceeded to use a toothpick to pat down the sides. It would lift frequently so it was a lot of patience, adding heat with the heat gun, and smoothing in on with the toothpick. I'm sure if I had some 3M adhesive promoter it would have been much easier. The material for this part doesn't bond all that well to the vinyl. The OEM cf parts on the other hand stick very well.
