WTF
My phone restarted after the installation ended, and now it won't let me use it. It gave me that picture of the USB cord pointing towards the iTunes logo, so I plugged it in. iTunes begins to open the iTunes Store and then says that it "could not complete my iTunes Store request".

I do have a question. If I were to put my SIMM into a different phone, would that chafe the AT&T thing to allow me to send mms? I know that with swirlymms, that is something that you had to do to enable mms.
Just a thought.

I always thought it was going to be kinda retarded that there simply isn't a "notes" app that it syncs with.

Yea, I've already done that. I saw that you go into the info tab and choose "sync notes" but where does it store the notes you sync? I've already looked in the Stickies app and in the Notes Widget in dashboard and my notes aren't there.
I always thought it was going to be kinda retarded that there simply isn't a "notes" app that it syncs with.

now the real question is why does Apple think someone needs 3 places to save different notes...now they should all sync.

Apparently some people are having trouble with the update. It's seems that yet again Apple's being a little overwhelmed right now. I now realize why they chose release the software update two days before the new hardware so that their servers wouldn't get thoroughly destroyed by both old phone and new phone activations at the same time. Seems like it didn't work.
If in windows and you get an error -9808, try this
In any event, I found a fix online and I thought you'd like to know that there's an issue with iTunes and IE (go figure, huh?). Not much on Google right now, but the error I received after the upgrade was completed was -9808 when contacting the iTunes store. The fix is to go into Internet Explorer, go to advanced options, scroll down to security and UNCHECK "Check for server certificate revocation". Restart iTunes and close IE and you should be fine. My iPhone was stuck on the connect to iTunes screen for forever. After changing that option, I was able to finish the installation and the iPhone rebooted itself and displayed the activation pop-up or whatever you want to call it.

That was uncalled for...
I'm liking the smooth browsing in Safari... No more waiting for the white and gray crosshatch for a few seconds when scrolling fast... it's still there but loads much quicker.
Not much else I've played with...

I think I got the update done OK....it took about 20 minutes and I also got the pop-up message that Stunna showed above. But I had 12 apps to update. I did them while plugged into my MacBook Pro. They were updated with my iPhone plugged in. But when I unplug the iPhone, the Apps Store still shows (on the iPhone) that I still have App updates to do....yikes.

Ahhhh, thanks for the info. Having the notes in Mail is absolutely
There should have been a "notes" application that allowed for quick note taking. I don't use Mail and don't ever plan on it because I use Thunderbird. So much for utilizing the notes sync feature. BLECK!

But the update went fine. Can't complain.
Edit.. After the restore, all of my app icons are still missing. They are installed, but still missing. I am going to have to do a restore and not restore the back up.. SIGH...

Jailbroken.
I fixed it. I had to do a restore, but I chose the option "Set up new phone" or whatever the one that is the opposite of restore from backup is.
When you choose the first option, you can still import your contact, but nothing else comes back. Also, when you sync your apps, they will re-download from iTunes.. This has been the most painless update. A little bump, but it was self induced. I really liked that all the apps re-downloaded themselves. That was nice.

Question:
If the iPhone can be jailbroken and unlocked at the current moment, what is this "release" on Friday that I'm hearing about from the Dev Team?

alright bitches this is for you adventerous mo fuckas only. How to enable tethering (and possibly MMS) on AT&T w/ iPhone 3.0.
You're gonna need a couple things first itunes 8.2 pre release and AT&T carrier files version 5.0 (links provided)
1. uninstall iTunes 8.2 then go to the iTunes music folder and move the itunes library files to another folder.
2. download iTunes 8.2 http://www.iphoneheat.com/2009/04/do...2-pre-release/
for you windows x64 users like myself the pre-release version linked above will install and work fine even though it gives you a warning.
3. download AT&T 5.0 carrier file.
for mac users the files is here: http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/iphonetetheringfile.dmg
for PC users, PM me your email address and I'll send you the carrier file.
4. open itunes 8.2 pre-release (will only work if you've already moved the iTunes library files to another folder)
5. connect iPhone then option-click (for mac) or shift-click (for PC) on the "check for updates" button and then choose the AT&T.ipcc file and it should update your phone in just a couple seconds.
for PC users make sure you choose ipcc from the "file type" drop down list on the right.
6. Restart your phone.

7. once it restarts go to settings > general > network > internet tethering
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25469567@N06/3637148221/" title="IMG_0186 by klxz79, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3549/3637148221_6021f98f07_o.png" width="320" height="480" alt="IMG_0186" /></a>

8. connect your phone and in Windows it'll look something like this (I'm running windows 7, Vista is slightly different)
then your phone should look something like this
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25469567@N06/3637961774/" title="IMG_0190 by klxz79, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3409/3637961774_8811929a33_o.png" width="320" height="480" alt="IMG_0190" /></a>
here's the walk through guide to enable MMS but I can't do it cause I don't have another AT&T MMS capable phone (required).

WTF! when I plugged in my phone to the iMac and tried to go through the process of tethering to a Mac, I connected the phone and turned on tethering and then it asks me if I want to use usb or bluetooth then I tried to setup the new network adapter that OS X found. Then out of nowhere it canceled and the iPhone tethering screen disappears as does the tethering option in the iPhones network preferences. I then restarted the phone and the tethering option is still gone from the preferences screen.
I'm gonna try reinstalling the carrier file again but my phone still says it's carrier 5.0.

HAHA! Fuck you Apple! I got the tethering option back by reloading the carrier files using iTunes on Windows. So I guess it might be PC only!

I just updated my 1st gen iPhone a few hours ago with the new 3.0 software and it's nothing too special. The copy/paste thing is cool, but I doubt I'll ever use it.
The main question I have is why can't the original iPhone have MMS? Are the internals/connectivity of the 3G THAT much different than the original? I paid $500 for my iPhone when it came out and I can't even send/recieve MMS

Has anyone else noticed improved battery life? I charged mine yesterday for about 30 minutes (at about noon) to top off the battery and I went the rest of the day and all night then this morning. I have been using SMS a little internet and I was listening to XM on it for the better part of yesterday afternoon and my battery is still showing as full.
I hope.

Updated to 3.0 on the wife's phone and the my touch (for $10). Pretty neat, I like the shake to shuffle and my wife likes the landscape keyboard.
