Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
If the "bar" iphone is the real deal, I'm disappointed that there is still no removeable battery. That's a clear case of purposefully building product obsolesence.
Even Apple lovers have to admit there's a certain amount of arrogance to their products. They really don't want you to open them up, modify them, or extend the product life.
For the record, I still like my iPad... no buyers remorse.

I think that Apple could have planted that device. I mean, what better time. They are 2-3 months from releasing it. With all of the new HTC phones coming out, Apple is probably getting a little nervous. When the first iPhone came out. There was really nothing out there like it. All they had to say to get people excited was "Hi, we are Apple and we are coming out with a phone". Times have changed. They have to do a lot more to generate the hype.
What better way to get people to wait on the 4g and not get something else.
With Mobile Me, you can get the exact location of the phone. Why not do that and show up at dudes house to get the phone? If Apple has all of this security, I am sure they could make it happen. Why not get the police involved? I mean, you know exactly where the phone is.

If you dont like it, you know what you can go do with yourself
. As if you are any less of an annoying person on this forum...guess you're the pot and I'm the kettle.
It's funny that you say stunna's head is going to blow up... when you take the time to respond to him for the sake of defending your "blasted" opinion (that no one cares about but you).
I hope you took your blood pressure medicine, AcuraZine can take a lot out of you.

You should be offering him the BP meds. I had a smile on my face the whole time.

Like most mobile tech enthusiasts I followed the Gizmodo iPhone story, but just finished reading a comment posted on Andy Ihnatko’s Chicago Sun Time site that indicate Gizmodo may have been punk’d by Apple and the device may just be one of many prototypes floating around and have no relation at all to the upgraded iPhone we all except this summer.
You see, the photos of this iPhone device were posted back on February 20th on Twitpic by TUDream and no site seemed to pick them up and run with them at the time. Like Andy, I find it pretty unbelievable that a lower level Apple engineer was walking around with the actual new iPhone that we will see in June. He may have been testing out a component or part of the device, but I personally believe the new iPhone will be something more along the lines of a thin iPod touch form factor device with the expected updates of a faster processor, higher capacity camera, higher resolution display, etc. that we all know are natural progressions of high end smartphones.
The story was dramatic, for geeks, and definitely generated a lot of hits for Gizmodo and many others while taking away a bit of the HTC DROID Incredible news. However, was it all just a publicity stunt? I guess we will have to wait and see in a few months.
Does anyone actually think this is the next iPhone hardware?

Sucks how so very wrong I was about this whole thing and completely out of left field and off my rocker....right Stunna? Right?
Yeah...
yeah definitely not a new concept. its just funny, the reaction it causes among the masses. truly funny. I can only imagine the Apple offices, soaking in all of the commotion after they release their time-bombs.
Andy Inatkho is a bigger Apple fan than sarlacc and I don't really value his opinion. Anyone that raves about the iPad's keyboard has lost it.
Yes Apple spent all this time to design a nice looking working phone fake phone then disguised it to look like a 3GS and then left it at a bar hoping someone would find it and then take it out of it's case to discover it wasn't a 3GS.

yes, lets change our PR strategy that's worked perfectly for US for 25 years and leave a phone at a bar. y'all are fuckin stupid

A controlled leak? The lost iPhone planted by Apple? You have no idea how Apple PR works—and how, like it or not, Gizmodo finally beat them at their own game.
The only way the iPhone 4 was a controlled leak is if Apple has completely upended its PR strategy, which is the envy of the entire business world. The only way it could even work, presuming it were true, would be the destruction of a decade of meticulously laid plans. It would be cashing in all the marketing chips for no clear gain; Does anyone really think the iPhone 4 wouldn't have been a huge story on its own in June?

Doesn't matter if it looks like said device, I still say whether its the real deal or misinformation it was planted on purpose. Its what I've been saying all along, it goes either way.
Agree.
And I really don't fucking care if it's intentional or not. It's stupid to even argue about it. The only thing that matters is if that's what it's really going to look like.
If it is, I'm there. I'd welcome a bit more square edge. I think the Zunes are the best pure in-your-hand experience. Some may argue for curves and form-fitting to your hand, but I'll take the security of having that hard corner in my hands any day.
Can't wait for June, and then August (when I think my upgrade will kick in).

It just doesn't make sense. Why would Apple want to plant a headfake? All it does is make them look incompetent.
These types of games don't play over well in the long run. If they release a completely different device in June, no one will pay attention to leaks any longer, at least from Apple. Leaks are what keep the people salivating and wanting more information.
What do they do next time? Start dropping phones in multiple random bars throughout Europe to throw people off? That is not Apple's style.
Really? Do you not read? What would the kid have gained from doing this on purpose aside from getting fired?
duh

And EVERYONE loves to speculate on what apple is doing... They have for years. Its what allowed a guy in his early 30s to retire from being a 6 figure doctor to making more money owning/running macrumors.com. And the number of times bad, wrong, or ludicrous information has been leaked is off the charts...and yet, there are the people, starving to tid bits of information, even potentially false ones.

Fact is Apple beat everyone to market with this product and they kept their foothold for a few years. Now, the real competition is starting. And a lot of attention has been going to Android and upcoming phones from their camp. Phones like the HTC gaining buzz and ground.
On top of that, June is when Apple makes their announcements....right around now is when people bought their iphones in junes are starting to think about their soon to expire contracts.
So, who has had the cellphone spotlight for the last several days? Apple. Any mention of HTC or android? nope. Apple got ALL the attention. And now they have all the interest hanging around them until they announce in June.
The fact that is not Apple's style is exactly the point.
Calm yourself, you and I both know I don't care about your tough guy persona.
It sounds like you are grasping at straws man sorry. There answer to competition is leaving pre-release version of devices laying around for people to find? It doesn't make sense. Apple could have just as easily made the hardware announcement.
I just don't buy that someone at Apple pulled this kid aside, handed him a camo'ed iphone and told him to go out drinking in Germany and let it fall out of his pocket in hopes that someone would find it, know enough of what it is, and submit what he found to a tech blog.
Why do this? Why not just announce the hardware?

Have you become retarded or delusional? Where in my reply was I acting like a tough guy?
Because I have stated my feelings on the matter and you come out of left field with questions that I never even alluded towards? Yeah, OK, that me flaunting a tough guy persona
Responding to someone's question with "Really? Do you not read?" is uncalled for. Save it for the newbs who might be impressed.

Apple makes their announcements. They have them scheduled and for items such as this they make huge presentations out of them. The past has shown that info leaks and rumors only make the fans more excited to hear the words straight from Apple, as does the gaining interest piqued by the non-fans.
Again...how many views, hits, mass attention has this whole incident drawn towards Apple. Its a build up with the release coming in June at the keynote. If they just announced the hardware..that would be it until the phones release. Right now, they have everyone talking about it and speculating about it until the official announcement and no one is talking about HTC or android anymore for the time being.
Yeah, I could be totally wrong (which I've also stated several times)...but a lot of people have the same thoughts I do on the matter.

Fuck, are you sitting at your computer with a box of tissues and some fresh kotex today?
Responding to someone's questions with "do you not read" implies that you aren't reading and pulling questions out of thin air that I never alluded to and in that case is very much called for.

Gizmodo is doing a photoshop contest -like they do every week- and the theme is Steve Jobs strikes back at Gizmodo. Here's my entry, It's simple but I like it!

The guy on the right is Jason Chen they guy for Giz who did the hands-on of the iPhone and wrote all the articles.

p.s. yes I know Steve looks like he's turning head like it's almost broken. That's the best head shot i could find.

I wouldn't say he's full of himself he's just enjoying the spotlight. I'm sure we'd all do the same thing. It's like being the nerdy kid in school and then you do something that gets the attention of the entire school and everyone wants to talk to you now. So when all the cool people want to talk to you feel accepted, I guess. I mean if I did something and it got the attention of Corolla or all these other shows then yeah I'd probably go on them too.
As soon as I say I can't find a better pic of Jobs I stumble across one when I'm not even looking for one.
my final version

So my 3GS suddenly developed a column of dead pixels. An entire column top to bottom. I dunno what happened... I didn't drop it or anything.
So I'm thinking of trading it in for a 4G once it comes out... but I'm only 1yr into the contract.
Anyone here go from a 3G to a 3GS? How did that go? How much was it? What did you do with the 3G?

I did.
Great, had a friend at AT&T. I sold the 3G and paid the contract renewal price on the 3GS without renewing
~$30 when it was all said and done.
Listed it on various forums, jailbroken and unlocked. Sold it for $220 IIRC.
