I like the part about the idiot employees in the store really thinking that they work for Apple.

How else is Apple going to sell you attachments/add-on's or get people to use their App store and other online services? Gotta maximize their profits some how.

From Apple:

Exactly what you need. And nothing you don’t.

Mac mini is designed without an optical disc drive. Because these days, you don’t need one. It’s easier than ever to download music and movies from the iTunes Store. And you can download apps from the Mac App Store with a click. So what did we do with all the extra space? We squeezed in more powerful processors, advanced graphics, and Thunderbolt technology. And removing the optical drive gave us room to do one more thing with Mac mini: lower its price. If you still want to burn discs, consider the external MacBook Air SuperDrive, which connects to Mac mini with a USB cable.

4 GB Memory 11 inch model with the i7. Im excited...

Just how often do you use your OD? I'll be lucky if I use it once per month. Nine out of ten times, I d/l all software I need. Hell sometimes I d/l software that I have the CD or DVD for. I just installs faster.

It seems to have been overlooked but the new thunderbolt displays are pretty awesome!
Built-in iSight, 2.1 speakers, 3usb, FireWire 800, and GBe NIC and 2560x1440 ips screen for $1000! Pretty damn nice!

Unfortunately it's a gloss screen which makes the whole thing a deal breaker for me. Plus you need a thunderbolt Mac for it to work, I didnt think the work with the previous models....

I think if the rumors of a 1080p capable apple tv become true...you're going to see apple try and skip right past bluray. Apple just doesn't have a positive stance on BR right now.

I'd think the thunderbolt display will work with any mac with a mini display port, the whole point of thunderbolt was to work with display port. Reading the specs though it calls out thunderbolt equipped macs, but maybe that's just to get the complete functionality (which btw is awesome to run everything over a single cable).

I'm pretty excited about it, but my biggest complaint is no easy way to connect a machine without display port (have a windows laptop for work).

I don't think it's ever happening, if it was coming it would've happened by now. They're phasing out optical drives from laptops all together, it's on the "descendency" as Steve would say

+1

While there isn't a lot to compete with BR right now (1080p), I think it's a dying tech, optical disks are well on their way out.

i agree that it's not as popular as how compact discs were in the past, but i disagree it's a dying tech. streaming has its limits and just cannot replace bluray right now.

shoot, comcast even has the 250GB per month cap (or what they call average joe's usage per month - supposedly they will contact you if you go over), so streaming 10GB (approximate 1080p encoded movie filesize) per movie won't cut it, not to mention you will need at least 10Mbps connection + not as good quality as bluray.

but yea. personally, i don't really care if i lose some quality on mkv format over bluray. but some do.

I care, as of right now, can't stand watching Netflix streams vs a bluray. Especially if I have a stutter or hiccup in my connection. And I hate rewinding or fast forwarding a stream.

Although the large sized mkv files online are acceptable to me, but were talkig 10+ GB
