It's cheap to upgrade the ram. IIRC, back when I upgraded the RAM in my iMac it was only about $80 for 16GB of RAM.

This was a screen shot of the rMBP base model. From what it's showing, you can get a base model rMBP 2.3 but add more RAM or storage opition.

But I haven't seen it on Apple's site yet.

I've had great luck with the OWC SSD drives. And you'd only need a 3/gbs one (less expensive) cause your laptop is only enough it wouldnt make use of the newer speeds. My MBP flies.

That said...depending on what you use your computer for...5-6 years old is about the point where the current gen of apps/hardware has surpassed the machine and its starts to SLOW down.

If youre just on the net, light use etc...get the SSD and save some money.

Was going to buy 512 for my desktop was just a little too much for the Samsung 9 series. Though the rMBP that came today has one. Couldn't see paying $400 on top at this for 768.

I am loving this track pad!!!! Oh and the screen kicks ass as well.

And Thunderbolt display will be here tomorrow.

I've had 3 OCZ SSDs fail on me. I actually shipped the third one back on Saturday and am waiting for them to replace it with a new one for my HTPC.

I doubt I'll ever buy another OCZ product again.

Every SSD make and model has one or two reviewers that said it crashed after a week. I just got used to the fact that they are still drives and not perfect. Just buy whats on sale and backup your crap. I cant remember what I have in my laptops, but no dead drives (knock wood)

With that experience would be hard to do that. I went with Samsung SSD because of their name. Just like I won't use Kingston memory for CF and SD cards.

Except the reviews on Newegg for the OCZ Petrol 128 (the latest to crash) show far more than "one or two reviewers" having it crash. Look at the distribution of the reviews:

>50% with 1/5 stars... that's a shitty product, not bad luck.

Edit: And just for kicks - the other one that died (twice!) was an 80GB Vertex 2. Here are the review spreads for that one:

STAY AWAY.

Had my rMBP for a little over a week. Amazing computer. Screen is out of this world, when I go to my early 2008 MBP with 1440 by 900, literally, it looks like theres a layer of Vaseline or comparable lubricant on the screen itself. 10 second bootups are awesome.

2.6, 16 gb of ram. I need to find another job...

Oh and for those with the retina MBP, for more battery life:

And download this app to control the switching of GPUs. When using iPhoto, etc it auto switches to the dedicated GPU, when its not really needed.

Wonder if that will work on the older macbooks... I know my battery is old, but it seems to go down more with Mountain Lion. My battery is on its way out, I should just buy a replacement.

Possible for a 13" Retina later this year. A new 15" won't until next summer.
